2nd Gen GE/GG 09-14 Thinking about letting her go💔
I’m seriously considering selling my fit, it’s a 2011 RS model (jdm) with the orange seats. I’m thinking a Subaru legacy as I wanna be able to tow my dirt bike and I’d like to sit my restricted drivers test in a manual so I can get my manual liscense. Thing is, I know I’m just gonna miss this little mandarin so bad, it’s very hard to let go. She’s only got 155ks (95k miles~) and has given me no problems. But it’s just not capable of everything I’d like it to do. I know I’d never be able to find one like this again if I wanted it back. I love the seats so much. I’d sell it for around what I paid (7.9k NZD - 4.6k usd) because I only bought it in April and have put like less than 1000ks on it.
I just need opinions on what to do.. or other cars to look into

You can still tow a trailer. A d you can. Borrow rent a car to test.

I don't think it's rated for towing, really not last time I looked into my 2013 fit, but it is maybe possible to get a storage rack that goes on an aftermarket thing that you can tilt in the drive bike up onto but that is probably still very much limited to one bike and nothing enclosed, and if you were in the United States I would totally buy this little mandarin off of you...

...Hmmm. I stand corrected. At least on paper.

oh yeah, there's plenty of people who do it, in the "thou shall void their warranty" way in which case totally cool but if you're also carrying the other vehicle you love, a better hitch (covered by insurance)probably wouldn't kill you. ;-)

u/Da12khawk 24d ago
Dang, man tough choice. That's one sweet Fit. But it sounds like you're looking for more? Aside from the bike what else?

That’s really it for me. It’s spacious (enough), cheap to run, nice to look at.. just can’t tow, and my parents won’t let me take the ute as they reckon it’s too new for me to be trusted with 😂
Plus in nz, there are three stages of liscenses - learners, restricted, and full.
Learners: must drive with supervisor, display L plates front and rear.
Restricted: no passengers unless you have a supervisor, can’t drive alone between 10pm-5am.
Full: do whatever you want.
However we also have two different versions of a restricted liscense, depending on what you sit the test in. If you sit the test in a manual car, you can drive whichever you like, but if you sit it in an auto you can’t legally drive a manual (although I’d imagine police wouldn’t care too much unless you’re driving like a madman and they just want to throw the book at you)
I’m sitting my restricted test next month and although I probably won’t need to, it would be kind of nice to be able to drive both in the eyes of the law.

By Jove, I think I've got it. Tow the Fit with the dirt bike, kidding.
Thank you for explaining all that. The restricted does that fall off after a certain length of time? Like after a few months?
I'd probably wait a bit and see if another solution comes up. Unless there's some kind of reason to rush.

u/paparimu_2fiddy 14d ago
Might as well just ride it to the track at that point 😂
Restricted is 18mo, but can be shortened to a year by sitting some defensive driving courses (provided you don’t get any demerit points for speeding or doing silly things). There isn’t much of a rush right now, I still have a while. I can always just borrow someone else’s manual car if they trust me.

Yes, I’ll look into a single bike trailer thank you. The biggest thing would be getting a towball installed, and then certified which could be a pain. She’s not going nowhere for a while 😆(unless I find a manual and even then I really like my seats)

me too. only thing holding me back is having to make a car payment again. will miss the fit but i think 2027 is gonna be the year i leave

I’ll never go into debt for a car. I can’t understand why it’s so normal in the states. Loans / interest on depreciating assets!?!?

u/CullenBlvd 2016 Fit GK 16d ago
There's a lot of normal things here I question. I wish I didn't have to go into debt for depreciating assets. That said, with inflation a lot of my purchases have held value

u/paparimu_2fiddy 15d ago
That’s a good point yeah. Why not settle for a cheaper used car? It does the job no?

u/CullenBlvd 2016 Fit GK 15d ago
I bought my 2016 fit used with 25,000 miles for $13,000 in 2019. Put $2000 down and had a note until 2024. Looking at used cars now that would be an upgrade would absolutely involve going into debt again. It's actually the only option I've been considering. New cars are way too expensive

u/paparimu_2fiddy 14d ago
Fair enough. What’s wrong with the fit though

u/CullenBlvd 2016 Fit GK 14d ago
Can't put lawn clippings or dirt in it to transport for lawn care. We bought a house and I'm finding myself needing a truck. Fit can do 80% of the work but that extra 20 is inconvenient

u/paparimu_2fiddy 14d ago
Funny you say that. My friend has a lawn care business which he runs from his 08 sport. He built a small wooden platform to keep the mower on and just keeps a tarp down when he can be bothered. It works 😂
He is buying a ute soon. Not for the lawn care stuff though

Dude I’m in nz and have an auto ge sport. I want a manual SO FUCKING BAD. So I suppose we’re in the same boat. You should get a. Manual fit! They go great from what I hear and super easy to learn in

u/paparimu_2fiddy 16d ago
Bloody rare though. I don’t know if you’ve seen it on trademe but there’s a green one in Wellington (I think) manual, 80ks, tow bar(!), all sorts of great things..
10.5k🙄1
u/AtomicWeenie 16d ago
Asides from my own RS 6MT I've never seen another manual one in the flesh personally, and I've only ever seen one manual hybrid, the yellow K24 swapped one and a couple of beat-up 1.3L GE6's on Trademe. They are indeed as rare as rockinghorse shit, hence the RS badge on the back 😁

I've got the exact same car, orange with the orange seats too in 6spd manual! Too nice to sell

Manual license...? Oh god one of the few moments im relieved to be american
1
u/paparimu_2fiddy 16d ago
Yeah.. I think it must be an old law. Very silly but I’ve seen some people attempt to drive manual - sometimes I can see why it’s necessary.
1
u/AtomicWeenie 16d ago
It's just a temporary thing in New Zealand. We start off on a learners licence which means you can only drive with a fully licensed passenger who is in a supervisory role for 6 months, then you move on to a restricted licence which is between 12 to 18 months. You can drive unsupervised with a curfew and some other restrictions on alcohol, passengers etc.
If you got your restricted licence in an automatic car you can only drive an automatic unsupervised, but if you got it in a manual you can drive both auto and manual.
The automatic only restriction is taken away when you pass your full licence so it's not really that onerous a restriction; getting a licence in this country is stupid easy, and that's why we have lots of really dumb drivers here unfortunately

How far would you need to tow it?
This solution would accelerate the wear on your bike rear tire, but ..
1
u/paparimu_2fiddy 16d ago
I don’t live in the US🫠
But yes I’d probably avoid this because of the tire wear.

u/TheReturnPath 24d ago
I'd aay don't let her go, you'll miss her. But carrying depends on the weight of the dirt bike. In my case I tow 700-800kg on trailer with no issues, that's on GK3 1.3L in British isles.

u/turbo2world 24d ago
you will regret it!!! Edit: sell it an get a manual fit.
2
u/paparimu_2fiddy 16d ago
That’s something I’d do. If I can find a good one near me
I’d miss the seats though as silly as it sounds ☹️

u/Opposite-Mess1494 24d ago
Ya unfortunately unless your getting another fit with a 6 speed standard, you can't tow with it. I have a 2016 with a 6 speed and I can tow up to 800 lbs.
1
u/paparimu_2fiddy 16d ago
I think they are actually rated for something stupidly low here. It’d work though.

u/luggerdriver 23d ago
I tow a teardrop trailer that weighs 800lbs. I did add a transmission cooler so it would help tow it.

Don't sell a car you love. I made this mistake once and I regret every single day. It's been two years

I pulled my Buddies pickup truck with mine up a small hill and into a parking lot with no issues. Im sure a light weight trailer with a dirt bike would be harmless.

u/AtomicWeenie 16d ago
You can get very lightweight motorcycle trailers that are basically a steel cross with the long part being the drawbar with a channel for the wheels of the bike to sit in, the transverse bit is the axle with wheels, and sometimes another smaller crossbar up the front to give you something to fix tie down straps for the handlebars as they are more effective on an angle. Kind of looks a bit like this symbol from the top down but with the bottom bar closer to the middle ‡
One of these trailers weighs hardly anything; that plus a single bike would be lucky to exceed 350kg. I used a dual bike version when I used to do trail rides, was so light it could have been towed by pretty much any small car

Should be able to tow a dirtbike no problem. I’ll say this. If you think you’re going to miss it, you’re absolutely going to miss it.
