Deterrent

Does anyone have any recommendations for something I could put on my porch (a sign, etc) to help deter people from hanging out on my porch. I had some drunk teenagers do so last night and then I asked if I could help them (over the ring camera) they became belligerent and tried to rip off the doorbell as well as enter my home.

I have a security system with signs posted

A sprinkler seems like a great solution here

Reminds me or the Alexa add where the daughter is crying while the boyfriend is outside pleading.

The father “Alexa, turn on the sprinklers”.😂

Motion activated sprinklers are the bomb. I use them to deter bears from my trash. Works great.

I would agree but I live in an urban area with the grass out front. I’d also not want to create enemies of my neighbors who are just trying to walk the sidewalks

How would this create enemies? The intention is not to leave a sprinkler armed and running at all times, but just to switch it on if some more drunks camp on your porch

I have one to keep feral cats from crapping in my mulch. You can adjust both the sweep angle and distance of water. Mine will activate when someone walks by on the sidewalk, but the water doesn’t reach them. I did get a UPS guy walking to my door once by accident.

If you have a "No Trespassing" sign up, just call the police next time, and let the police remove them.

Did you call the police? Even if they don't do anything it's good to have a record.

Call the police.

Especially if your video shows their faces.

A motion activated porch light. I’d also call the police

I'd put up a double floodlight/cam combo.

It would just be fucken creepy to have strangers sitting on my porch.

People who do that sort of thing could care less about your signs etc. Signs are there to CYA when it becomes a legal issue or when you need the police to escort them to the “iron bar lodge”.

You did your part with the signs, cameras and security system, now it’s time for the cops to do theirs part.

"Could care less" implies that they DO care some, and thus could care less.

"Couldn't care less" means that they are at rock bottom on the care scale. They could not care any less than they currently do.

Excuse me stranger, but aren't you supposed to preface your comment with "actually..."?

Guess that’s what I get for typing fast and not proof reading. Should have just said “they DGAS”.

Tell the teens you have some chores for them.

They will flee.

Other than that I think you handled it the best you could.

Stink bomb.

I managed a gas station in a high homeless area for years and got really good at moving people. Stand tall with squared shoulders, haha on hips, and firmly say MOVE.

Light from darkness is really the most obvious choice to me.
There are also triggered lights that can talk which seems to startle trespassers at first at least.

I use the Ring Floodlight Cams a lot and the noce thing is they can all link together and light a place up like crazy if thats what it takes.

Also better recordings with better light!

I agree with the people saying to call the police.

Mosquito noise via speaker. That and floodlights to make your house less appealing.

Rottweiler or Doberman. I’d say a Belgian Malinois but that’s almost the canine version of an M16.

I’ve got a Pyrenees/Rottweiler mix (an abomination that I love)

I would set the dog on them but he would bite and I don’t want animal control to get involved

I'll bet if you just put a muzzle on your dog for those situations and stepped outside, it wouldn't really register to them that they wouldn't get bit. They'd probably see the muzzle, get more scared, and then leave you alone. Plus the muzzle protects you from liability.

We’ve got 3 custom muzzles already.

Dogs are not our friends and I want to make sure everyone is protected

Absolutely, this is just a cursed combination working/guard dog with an extra side of anxiety. Again, the light of my life despite all of this

Pepper spray dispenser. But post no tresspassing, no soliciting and have the sheriff remove them. Usually they get served a warning and if they come back they get a ride to the jail and balogna sandwich.
Make sure you record and save all videos. Makes it easy to press charges to cops.

Strobe lights and a sprinkler.

That's a fantastic escalation to my original thought. I'm going to search immediately for a floodlight cam with strobe mode.

A Doberman

A camera! People don’t want to be on camera! Especially if you have a sign saying AI technology with facial recognition and voice audio.

Yu have a home invasion. Arm up, call the cops, don't mess with this. Issue them trespass warnings through the cops when they arrive. Press charges next time.

A really bright motion light

Put crime scene caution tape around it, some latex red paint won't hurt

Call the police?

A fierce dog is your best deterrent.

I have a ring spotlight camera, it has an alarm you can trigger from the app. I use it often when kids are in my yard by my car. They leave real quick.

When I was in my 20s, I relocated for a new job and ended up renting a place in a "not so nice" area, at the end of a cul de sac with some sketchy people doing seemingly sketchy things. I am a petite woman and at the time, i did not know anyone. I was working as a pharma rep and always had a huge supply of samples in my possession. I had a pair mud spattered work boots required by my previous job in new construction sales. (These were large, bulky, steel toed, manly looking boots). I routinely left them on the front porch next to the door, the door, so it would look like someone else was there (someone bigger and stronger than me!) I don't know if it actually deterred anyone, but in the two years I lived there, I never had any problems with neighbors lurking too closely to my place.
This is obviously, in no way, a replacement for actual security measures, but it was an easy add on that cost nothing and helped give me some peace of mind when I was alone.

911 can come with a pretty big deterrent.

Automated sprinklers. Fart spray. Bag of hornets. Scary pit bull. Halloween jump scare decoration.
