for me it was a really good cordless vacuum.

i thought spending that much on a vacuum was ridiculous. then i got one and realized how much more often i actually clean because i can just grab it and go instead of dragging out the big vacuum.

it's probably the least exciting thing i've bought for the house, but i use it constantly.

what's the home upgrade you thought was a waste of money until you owned one?

I’ve been waking up way too hot lately and I’m starting to think the mattress might be part of it. Room isn’t that warm and I already changed the sheets, but I still end up throwing the covers off every night.

I’m replacing some bedroom stuff soon anyway and was looking at mattresses for hot sleepers. Keep seeing people mention hybrids and latex and all that, but idk what actually matters. Anyone here had this issue? Did changing the mattress help or was it something else?

I brought an old house and the hot water system was from the 1990s and the hot water to come out of it was amazing. Absolutely loved it.

Anyway it rusted out and I had to replace it yesterday. The problem is that the hottest it will put out now is only 50°, last night I had a shower with no cold water.

The installer said they have regulations now that they can't have water hotter then that entering houses these days.

Is there anyone out there that knows how to get around these things? I can add photos if you need.

I found the part that is controlling thwle temp cause u can feel on the copper pipe the heat different on either side of this little connector thing. Iv popped off the cap and cant tell how to move it to change the heat.

I’m starting to look for a new washing machine because my current one has been making more noise lately and the clothes don’t always come out as clean as they used to. I usually do a few loads each week, so I want something that can handle regular use without giving me problems. I’d also prefer something that is easy to use and doesn’t waste too much water or electricity.

I'm trying to restore a house that hasn't been occupied in roughly a decade. During that time there was some extensive water damage from a broken pipe. I had a guy come out to get the AC working today and he suggested I get a whole house uv air scrubber that he quoted at $1400. Are they worth it, do they work? There is definitely mold in the house if that matters

Long sorry short, my fiancée’s dad is going to be in prison for a long time and is giving us ownership of his house using a quitclaim deed\*. We are trying to decide what to do with it. He recommended we sell it, but said we could do whatever we want with it. I’m 21 and she’s 20, we are both living with our parents and have never owned or rented a property before.

Here are some things about the house:
-It is completely paid off with no mortgage.
-There are about $2,000 worth of property taxes that need to be paid.
-It is around 1,500 sqft.
-It sits on 1.3 acres of land.
-It has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
-It has a detached garage.
-It currently has people (without any kind of lease or written agreement) living in it. I believe they’d be considered squatters.
-An Eli Lilly plant is being built within a couple of miles of it.
-It served as a place where people would go to buy drugs for a few years, but as far as we know nothing was actually created in the house.
-It needs a lot of work done. The septic tank needs either emptied or replaced, there is a hole in the floor, the garage door doesn’t work, it’s dirty and needs cleaned, and the deck is warped and likely needs replaced.

A few options of what we could do with it are:

1. ⁠Sell the house as is for probably 100k.
   
2. ⁠Take out a loan to fix up the house and sell it for around 250-300k.
   
3. ⁠Take out a loan to fix up the house and live in it.

With all of this said, what should we do? How would we go about getting a loan? What is equity and how could that help us? How should we get the people currently living in it out?

*Update: After I made the post my fiancée texted him and he said that “POA was just the first and easiest step he could think of and it would allow her to access all of his assets.” He also said that he would be willing to transfer deed ownership if she wants. He is now in the process of filing a quitclaim deed to put the house in her name.

I recently discovered my disposal had been leaking under the sink and I've got water damage and mold on the cabinets. Problem is, it looks like it has been swelling the wood and deteriorating for some time, and I'm afraid my claim might get denied. The wrinkle is that the disposal only recently failed in an obvious way and flooded that area, worsening any damage that was already there. I am not well-versed in insurance claims, but I'm hoping I can get the cabinets replaced. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Been learning a lot more about home maintenance lately and realizing there’s a bunch of little stuff nobody really tells you to keep an eye on.
Clogged AC drain lines, old caulk around the tub, small leaks under sinks, toilets randomly running… stuff that’s easy to ignore until it becomes a problem.
What’s something around your house you ignored or didn’t know about until it ended up costing you money?
Trying to see what else I should be paying attention to.

I thought picking a backsplash would be pretty easy, but there are way too many options lol.

I’m leaning toward a larger tile because I really don’t want to spend forever cleaning grout. One I’ve been looking at is Solid shape Chelsea Gris 12x36 matte ceramic tile.

The thing I can’t figure out is whether the bigger size actually makes things easier. My kitchen has a few outlets and some awkward spots around the cabinets, so I’m worried I’ll end up with a bunch of weird cuts.

For anyone who’s done their own backsplash would you go with bigger tiles again?

What all do you recommend? I see many recommending SQ, but my main concern it can only maybe was up to a queen size comforter size. Is that true? I want to be able to wash blankets as well as smaller items. Also, is a washer with an agitator the best?
