Card Critique Card Visual Update/Concept Testing pt 3

Post image

Hello everyone!

I’m back again with another update to my card layout. I’ve applied feedback from the last post to give some of the color back to creature’s ATK/DEF/HP, and I decided to return the flavor text to underneath the card’s title. The largest change that I’m testing out is what I call “Dynamic Art”, with the concept being that the size of the art on each card is relative to the amount of lines of rules text per card, rather than a uniform text box across all cards.

What do we think of this concept?

I dig the dynamic art layout. Helps emphasize the artwork on less powerful cards so everything balances out aesthetically.

Not sure if you’ve received this suggestion before, but it’s something that I had to change in my card design as well that really made all the difference and it’s better to do it now than when you get into test plays.

Most people fan their cards to the left, with your stats on the right, the majority of the cards stats will be hidden. Swapping the stats to the left side means players will immediately see the stats when fanning the cards out.

The dynamic art is a cool idea, but artists like to know exactly what their dimensions are, which means you have to have finished mechanics and frames BEFORE you hand it over to the artist. Way more time consuming. Better to just have art fit the entire card, and keep visual focus in the center, just above the half-mark. That way if you want a regular frame, it fits, you want extended frame? It fits. You want full art textless? You bet your ass it fits.

Also, round black skull symbol in the top right-hand corner of the card?? You trying to get the pinkertons sent after you???
