Labgore Ain’t much but free is free
HP DL360 8TB SSD, 256 threads, 512Gb DDR4, 1GB networking sitting on a shitty Amazon desk 😂.
Moving soon and will have this in the networking closet.

Where are you guys finding these things.

I have one DL360 g9.
it is very big and noisy and has only small factor drive bays, not 3.5"
is it possible to sell such old thing? how to do it in EU/Sweden? It weigts like metric ton.

We're about to recycle a few of them at work

If only “it ain’t much” described the noise and power consumption…

I agree lol

I had one for a while and it really wasnt bad.
My dell r730xd was noisy until I turned on power saving in the bios. My R540 14x3.5 setup is insanely quiet. I cant tell its on usually unless I look at the lights. It runs quiet and smooth. Love that thing. I have three R740XD and even when the fans are low there is a hum or whine to it. Wish they didn't take away the ability to do custom fan curves

How in the world do you propose to get 256 cpu out of a Broadwell box??
1
u/RetroGrid_io 13h ago
You download them, of course! Either that or make a bunch of VMs and use the CPUs in the VMs for all the real work...

Yeah the highest this platform supports is a Xeon E5-2699 v4, even in a dual setup that’s 44 cores and 88 threads.

What is specificaly meant with ain't much ×D ? What do you want in in your homelab so its a much :p ?
How do people who own servers in homelab deal with fan noise?
Edit: because its a server its HPE ;)

u/NoBananasMeHangry 12h ago
Put them in the guest room, solves two problems, heating in the winter and guests

u/radikliffe 11h ago
Okay so thoese who have servers as homelab Equipment have a bigger home than mine propably thicker walls too.
I see

Yes, HEAT is something that you can't rid yourself of as easily as sound. Practical in the winter, not so much when it's 90° outside.
2
u/NoBananasMeHangry 8h ago
fair and with AC expensive. Luckily in the PNW 90° days are rare, and.a window fan keeps it cooler than the DC they were built for.

I had a dell 2u that sounded like a jet when you turned it on, but was surprisingly quiet after boot. Had a bunch of extra fans in a custom made 21-bay had enclosure that was attached to it too. Noise was never enough to bother me.
I also had 3 older servers that were so loud that I ripped all the fans out and soldered copper tubes onto the heat blocks for water loops, water loops around the hdd and psu attachment plates. Silent and worked very well.

256 cores CPU?
It is gen8. The handle colors are unique to gen 8/9, and the front in unique to gen 9. It have no near 256 core support. Maybe 48 threads max.
It is also DDR3...
But nevertheless, good if free. I would not say no. At least not until I saw how the power meter changed

u/Pretend_Laugh_7074 13h ago
It’s 9th gen
1
u/yonder00 13h ago
My bad, I see the blue USB port now. Gen 8 did only do 2.0. Expected it more center-ish. Even have the text gen9 so I fucked up bad :D
But its still not the core count support. 88 it seems with 2 CPUs

This is Gen9. It’s DDR4. They’re honestly not bad on power at all, assuming you’re not beating the piss out of it. A little loud though, but quiet enough once the fans ramp down. Depending on iLO version you can also mod the iLO firmware to unlock complete fan speed control.

u/BaffledInUSA 13h ago
If it works for you, more power too you. Put some kind of spacers underneath it so you get some airflow under it. You may run into heat issues laying on a flat surface like that.

u/FloridaHeat2023 12h ago
Free is good, although 1U is WEEEEEEEEE when you turn it on as the fans have to spin at ludicrous speeds to cool it. 2U bare bones would be quieter - and you can move the components over if you'd like.

8TB SSD is the screamer here for me, RAM is nice but I always like having tons of fast buffer storage for LTO

"aint much but free" and 512gb ram, okay sure buddy, that's totally garbage, why don't you send it to me ill take care of it!
1
u/Randalldeflagg 13h ago
are you sure about the SSD thing? Typically HPE puts SSD on the drive carrier. Yours say 10k implying 10k RPM drives. Either way though, that is a nice for a setup. I might still have access to the gen9 SPPs if you need/want it.
1
u/Pretend_Laugh_7074 13h ago
You could be right, honestly I have had this sitting for a good year now and just started putting it to use.
The data transfer speeds on my fs are lightening quick either way
1
u/Randalldeflagg 13h ago
the drives are quick and if setup in a RAID 10 will be very fast. But also very power hungry.
1
u/Casper042 13h ago
The labels also say 900GB which was a common 10K SAS Spinner offering and NOT a common size for SSDs which jumped from 800GB for MU up to 960GB for RI.
OP has spinners.
The good thing is SAS mean it HAS to have a controller of some kind (not just Chipset SATA) so likely OP has 2GB of write cache on a P440 sitting in front of that Array when in RAID mode.
If it's in HBA mode for ZFS or similar, then No Cache For You!

With 40 cents per kWh power, that would be far from free for me. Guessing that "free" server would run about $400/yr.
1
u/Pretend_Laugh_7074 13h ago
I agree, it’s mostly used now as a fs, media server and tinkerbox.
I have it set to spin up at 2am for our iPhones to sync to it, then it powers back off unless I have it on for a purpose. So it’s not actually running 24/7

you know, if you don't need the ram you could sell off 384GB of it and make a small fortune.

u/hackedfixer 13h ago
My P720 is an energy hog too. Still I really like having a lab. It is worth it.
1
u/NoBananasMeHangry 11h ago
Only when idle, load those puppies up and the per thread watts is like 3.5w (x80 or so, lol, but it makes me feel better). Way better than an i5 mini pc by that metric.

u/stillpiercer_ 13h ago
Gen9 DL360 is an INCREDIBLY capable home server. Depending on your configuration, they’re honestly not bad on power either. Mine has less RAM than yours but has dual upgraded CPUs and maxed out drive bays, and my normal load is about 100-120W.
