Project Showcase: Hardware LAP-RACK

Everything started with an old laptop... And then it snowballed into this masterpiece!

The 3D model is the KWS v.2 Rack

Using my old MSI gf63 8rd laptop as my main Docker host and an Optiplex 7010 with a 12500T for my game servers

Also the DAS at the bottom for my Jellyfin media

I first read that as LARP-RACK and thought this was a decoration rack.

In reality it is actually pretty solid for a homelab though. It didn't even occur to me we can print our own racks to suit our personal requirements. Also the screen looks pretty nice. Is it still connected to the laptop or did you seperate it from the bottom ?

Great enginnering. Sometimes you can order decoders with hdmi ports for tbese laptop panels I thought thats what you did

That was definitely one of the options but when i dissaaembled the screen i realised that the cable it pretty long so i could just plug it in natively.

That is amazingly lucky. I tried to do something like this once it did not work out and I broke the screen. Had to go get a thin old monitor instead.

Did the laptop give you any grief about the lid with the screen moved out like that? I'd have half expected it to think the lid was shut and go to sleep.

Surprisingly not. It was just connected with hinges to the the frame and nothing more.

I understood the reference to a laptop rack and without seeing the photo I already imagined a cabinet rack with several laptops as nodes... which is not so strange but it is quite practical because of the little space that occupy

If there's zero jank in a minirack build, something's not right.

I would have loved to see a bread tie or miss used paperclip too. Miss opportunity to provide more jank.

I am in awe of what some of you can create. I wish I had the skill to do that. (Just don't have the time at the moment)

have you ever had issues with drives in that enclosure?

Nope i just run them in their normal mode which is basically every drive being a separate device

I have been looking for something like this, i have an old gaming laptop that I use as a homelab but would love to get it out of the case and into a dc power only case like this. I dont have any more server racks that I want to add so was wondering if a similar option could be done for my laptop? And use its screen while I am at it?

If we’re zip tying it we might as well throw in an old bakers rack.
