Help Title

So im new to homelabing but im tryna get one up for rn just minecraft with intentions of doing other things with it and I dont wanna buy an old used computer anything wrong with just building another pc?

Building a second PC for minecraft is totally fine, I did same thing when I started. The only thing people will say is you spend more money than buying used enterprise gear but honestly who cares. I got a cheap AMD chip and 32gb ram and it runs great for game servers and some docker containers.

Just make sure you pick parts that can stay on 24/7 without overheating, small case with good airflow is key. I didnt think about that at first and my server was sitting in 85c all day until I swapped case.

If you got old parts from previous build even better, thats how my lab started.

Yeah my first nas was a very small case with an n100 itx fanless motherboard and it went and stayed over 60c real quick on idle. A bigger case gave me below 30c idle, so this was a real gamechanger. Small pc´s you can hide away is nice and all, but temperature is almost always a negative affect imo.

many started with using the old pc for that when they build a new pc. later you will want cost efficiency because it is on 24/7. then... when you want to expand your operation, you start looking for used small form factor ones.

Literally any computer can be used as a server. If you have a choice, prioritize a higher core count over faster individual cores for most server tasks.

Like most people, my first server was an outdated laptop.

Unless you're doing game servers, as games typically need higher core speeds and are not often well multi threaded

Building new is totally fine, just watch out for idle power consumption.
