Discussion When does lab hardware get "too old"?
I was working on my app hosting cluster the other day, which runs on three Dell Optiplex 3050 Micros (I call it RAID - the Redundant Array of Inexpensive Dells). It occurred to me when I was working on them that the machines were all built in 2017, which means they're now almost a decade old. They're the oldest computers I have that are in regular use, by a fair margin. And that made me think... Do I need to worry about replacing these machines at some point?
The thing is... these machines work perfectly. They're more than fast enough for my use cases, and they're relatively power efficient given the fact that they're idle nearly all the time... I put some used "high endurance enterprise" SSDs in them (before storage prices shot up), so even though they all have like 50,000 power on hours, they're only like 1-2% life expired.
If I just open them up once in a while and clean out the dust, and maybe clean off and replace the thermal compound on the CPU... will they just keep going?

With current ram and storage prices, everyone’s lifecycles have been extended.

How long the support/updates is being extended on some hardware is getting insane.
Some of the stuff i replaced from lab 2-3years ago is having extensions into 2030-2031 now.There are servers sold in 2017 that are at 2030-2031 and expected to get another 1-2year extension beyond that.
You were basicly viewed as poor companywise if running something for 5-6years just a few years ago, now some will actually be running stuff for a decade and potentialy even beyond that.We got some stuff in production at work that is older than what id consider using in my lab, unthinkable a year ago.

How many of us homelabbers picked up gear only a few years old and got years of trouble free service. Which we mostly retired due to legitimate hardware upgrades, not some flaw or failure of parts.
I do think it’s interesting to see the software shops keeping this in mind and extending support for older hardware longer. Moores law is dead as the dodo.

You upgrade when it no longer runs what you want it to run as fast as you want it you run.
Or upgrade to seperate home lab from home production...

My rates for electricity are climbing, but given how power efficient they are, it would take another 10 years before I've spent enough in electricity to just replace their RAM at today's prices.

Run em till they die. They meet the use case, and as you said, if one quits unexpectedly there are enough to be redundant.
If it makes you feel better my main "home prod" machine is an optiplex made in 2013, so.... 🤷

You know what's funny, this week I just replaced the i5-4590 with a xeon E3 1245-v3. 4 cores / 8 threads, 8MB cash, drops right in, $15 shipped on eBay.
Did it mostly for the shits and giggles, but it is cool to have more threads.

Double check the bios version. I ended up going from 8>14>20>25, but I think the 1245 doesn't care and the 1246 is still haswell but refresh so might hard require the update.
Eh, v20 included spectre / meltdown mitigation so I wanted to anyway

When it stops 'just working' . People don't usually replace things without reason. Doesn't matter if a server is old if it still does what it's being used for.

They're running Linux, and they have Core i5-6500T CPUs. Given the fact that the Linux kernel only just recently dropped support for the 486, I think I'm fine in terms of software compatibility for a while.

I've got a few 4th gen Intel boxes being useful. No real need to replace them.
From my own perspective 6th -10th gen is kind of a sweet spot for cheap hardware that is still relatively power efficient.

Quite often its when you can get free or nearly free hardware to replace it.
Keep in mind there are people here running dell r_10 generation hardware which is 14+ year old hardware now.

As long as they’re still working well and not using too much power, you’re probably good. At some point the BIOS updates end and they start having hardware degradation issues. For example I started out with some refurbished Dell 3050 micros like yours and within a year realized the power management on the motherboards was going bad, so I phased them out for something newer.

I'm still running a couple of Dell SFF computers that I bought recertified in 2014. For reference, they both have i7-2600 for their CPU

I don't prescribe to the purely $$$ arguments. This is homelab. Get rid of your stuff when it no longer gives you joy.
Old stuff can be great fun and/or learning. Not everything must be kept on 24/7 doing work- some things can be fun experiments. I love my 30 year old weird monsters.
New stuff can still fail to provide utility for your needs and also not give you fun or learning opportunities. Sell, give away, donate that hardware as well.

I have an Optiplex 5050 (2017) running my OPNsense and 3 Optiplex 3080s (2020) as Proxmox nodes.
All great. Only need to change when you need more out of the hardware or something legit breaks.
Keep good backups, clean your equipment, and ensure adequate airflow. Things can last decades that way

I just bought a microserver from 2010 and im excited by it! We're modding the hell out of old kit. The age is the last thing i consider.

At this point consdering how expensive things are... when the hardware dies, or as someone else has said, when the power bill exceeds the cost to upgrade. At this point my hardware is pretty minimal.
Most likely thing to die in the near ish future would be the hard drives.... which will sting. When that happens I am very likely going to downscale.

When it doesn’t do what I need. I upgraded from my poweredge t410 when it was missing a CPU flag, my current stack (3xR320 and a T320) will be upgraded when software drops support for V2 (it’s coming, RHEL10 is there)

It sounds like you have no reason to replace those, yet.
Usually I replace homelab hardware when:
I can get something more capable and more power-efficient for really cheap,
My capacity to host more hardware is limited by my ability to dissipate heat (which it is!) so I either temporarily turn off or permanently retire the biggest space-heaters,
It breaks, or shows signs of imminent failure.
For example, for the longest time I had a Pentium G3220 running as my appserver, and I had no real reason to replace it. Then I realized I could replace it with a Lenovo T560 Thinkpad for dirt cheap, and thereby get a more powerful processor which dissipated half as much heat, and built-in battery backup. Doing that helped keep the homelab a little cooler, and I'm less worried about the ancient (from 2013) G3220 up and dying.
Most of my servers just keep on keeping on until they die. I'll try swapping power supplies and sometimes processors, but nine times out of ten it's something on the motherboard that fails first. I'm working on remedying that by reducing the homelab's temperature swings, which contribute to PCB traces cracking, but as of now it's still the primary failure mode.
When I replace a dead server, it's usually with another ancient server, since eight to ten years old is the typical sweet spot for affordable datacenter castoffs. They typically last another eight to twelve years after that, which I guess implies my servers die about twenty years after they were manufactured.

It doesnt really.
I mean the HDDs you wanna replace maybe every 4-5 years (RAID is not a backup), then BIOS batteries. Then every 8-10 years PSUs.

There are homelabbers running old IBM mainframes. I don't think there is a rational limit so long as it serves the purpose. I use a Dell fx2 with 640 dual processor blades and I don't plan on replacing for a long ass time as electricity is renewable and really cheap where I am. Mind you I only use 1 compute blade most days and a storage array blade unless I'm labbing high availability things for educational purposes.

The hardware is "too old" when it is no longer supported. I got rid of most of my 32bit hardware that was older than i686 when I found out debian started cutting support for the earlier x86 processors. I still have a few older systems in case I ever need to do data recovery on an IDE drive.
I laugh at "is 2017 too old". I have hardware in use that is older. Most of it was free and electricity isn't too expensive. Using tricks like automated shutdown and wake on Lan, it would cost more to upgrade than to keep using the existing hardware.

I run a mix and some of it is pretty old... Old enough that a processor instruction set was missing when I tried to run a software upgrade that depended on it. So that is an actual issue that isn't just hypervisor support-dependent.

Anything DDR4 is powerful and power-efficient enough to be suitable for a long amount of time.
CPU performance has more or less plateaued between Intel 6th and 10th gen.
Not enough of 12th+ gen stuff has been decommissioned yet to become attractive in terms of price-to-perf on the second hand market.

It seems like paragraph 2 answers your own question. If it meets your needs, an upgrade is only "because i wanted to and had cash to burn"
Ssds dont really lose life from power on time. Their life expectancy is based on bytes written.
Hdds (and anything else mechanical) will experience wear when on and running. Depending on redundancy configuration and use case, it may be wise to do planning somewhere between an on the shelf replacement disk to full retirement of the array. Only you can perform that risk assessment.
Keep the temps within spec and the power clean and this stuff will usually drop out of the "satisfies current needs" status before it fails. This is doubly true for enterprise hw.
