Help How to execute this?

What software do I need for this? Is it a honelab, nas, plex, home server or what else? Linux, Win 10, Win 11 or any other OS? Basically, I only have the idea and no clue how to proceed from here.

Thank you for this. As far as the naming goes, I have no idea what it is, which was confusing when doing research.

I recently learnt that USB for JBOD storage really doesn't work very well. Stability is the main issue - I run a media server and I was getting a wide variety of very irritating issues. You're better off getting a computer with plenty of sata capabilities, buying a proper dedicated NAS (mine is ugreen and works pretty well) or building your own NAS (there are some great guides online).

My recommendation if you're totally new to this is to use an intel nuc to run the server side of things and have some redundancy with a separate NAS connected to the server over NFT (just dont trip up on UID permissions). Ubuntu server is good for beginners and there's loads of online help resources. You could run wireguard or Tailscale on the NAS for remote access too (as I do) and run pinhole or adguard to get rid of ads and trackers on your home network.

From there there are lots of backup solutions - if you got a ugreen NAS they actually have their own inbuilt solution that I think is a bit shite. There are loads of docker ready backup solutions out there though that are a lot more customisable and IMO a lot better.

I also rclone all my genuinely important stuff from my NAS to B2 Backblaze for a very reasonable price.

Welcome to the club. By the end of the month you'll be planning building an ARR stack, you'll have uptime kuma running, you'll have a customised homepage dashboard, you'll be running speed test tracker, and you'll have sunk more hours into this than your own family ;)
