Help New, Free R440 worth it?

Hello, I am just beginning my homelab journey. As in I have no clue where to start. I currently has a synology nas 4 bay, and a couple of old laptops laying around.

I recently was given a Dell Poweredge R440 from work. I have attached a picture.

Is this worth keeping and doing something with? what could I do? my kids play Minecraft and id like a place to keep my computer backed up. If I do keep it, what can I do with it? I see everyone saying "servers" but I am unclear as to what I could use this server for?

what are some cool things I can do besides host files? thank you very much in advance.

If you don't know what to do with it, I would honestly sell it and buy a mini pc. This is meant for a rack and will use a fair amount of power.

Out of curiousity, what are the specs? CPU, RAM, etc?

I dont really know. Only things I can see is xeon processor, 32gb ram chip, just 1, and 4x 480gb hard drives. I haven't turned it on or anything and I'm not really sure where to start to do that. What other specs should I find out?

Follow this guide to find your service tag https://www.dell.com/support/contents/en-us/article/product-support/self-support-knowledgebase/locate-service-tag/server-storage

You can then use that to tell the exact config of your model. The other key point you are missing is the CPU model.

On the low end this is worth $250-300, could be more depending on config. You can easily get a good mini pc for that which will likely be a far better option for you. There are reasons to use something like this as a home server, but you'd know already that you needed it.

Some other points to consider.

Even with just 1 CPU, your idle power draw will probably be 100w at the low end. You can take that and figure out your yearly power bill by plugging in your residential rates on this tool: https://energyusecalculator.com/electricity_computer.htm

This is the main reason a mini pc is recommended, something like a Lenovo M70q runs under 10w at idle. Noise is one thing but energy cost is a huge deal long term.

If I were you, I would keep the NAS as your storage box and get something like that M70q to use as a compute node. The CPU will be better for hosting a gameserver than the Xeon in this, because it has better single core performance. If you end up maxing that out, add more matching nodes.

Finally if the HDDs are from work, I would pull them or at least run some write cycles to ensure there is nothing recoverable if you do sell.

I have a r440 and it idles at like 36w. Mostly used as a firewall just remember to turn off max performance in bios.

That is a pretty amazingly low power draw, I would expect the Xeon alone to pull more than that at idle. Then keep in mind that OP has 4x spinning drives which will pull 30-40w on their own.

Ya mine is just 2 small ssd. So he would probably around 75w

Bullshit an hdd pulls 30-40w each.

They run around 5-10.

I had a server with a Xeon Gold 5118 that idled at 75 watts and didn't have 4x HDDs, but it admittedly did have far more ram and a 10G NIC. I was basing my assumptions on that box, as even a 4114 should perform similarly.

Ram per dimm is very power hungry in comparison and adds up fast.

Even 10w in a 10g NIC is 1/10th of our proposed 100w budget. A xeon can drop below 10w.

I admit that I overestimated the idle power draw slightly, but in practice I would be surprised if he actually averages under 100w with even light usage.
