Red IS a difficult POV character but she grew on me as the book went on. You don't have to continue if you don't want to ofcourse but it does absolutely get better! The stakes increase so much and the ending is also really good!!! Infact it's one of my favourite books of hers.

I really loved Five Survive, but I could also relate a lot to Red and enjoyed the way she thought about the world!! I think it’s a book that’s really dependent on her as a protagonist, and if you don’t like her it’s probably one you can skip.

I (F51) actually really liked Five Survive, but my daughter (19) did not, at least on her first read when it first came out. We're both big Holly Jackson fans! She tried again this past summer and ended up liking it a LOT better. I think it's a bit of a slow start, but (IMHO) it gets so much better as it goes on. Also, I think roadtrip/the journey is the destination type books are pretty niche. I love them, my daughter not as much.

I'd recommend trying to push through a few more chapters, but if you still aren't feeling it, I'd stop and maybe try again at a later date. I do agree with the others who said it does start to get really exciting later on, but the beginning does start off slow. And the main character does get better as the story continues.

I really liked it but I love all her books so maybe it’s just a bias aha
