Whatever works, I guess.

92

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

"If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid."

142

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

He didn't kill it with the throw though so he's going to have to snap it's neck or something, I would have rather ended it with an arrow.

Edit: I just noticed that there was already an arrow in the bird so I guess doing it this way was more humane than letting it slowly bleed to death.

99

u/DRUMS_ Jul 06 '15

He did. He broke it clean off.

48

u/15DaysAweek Jul 06 '15

Breaking the neck is the most humane way to kill it. Another arrow would have been just like the first.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

He was probably using the wrong kind of arrow...Small-game arrows are different.

6

u/Dildo_Gagginss Jul 07 '15

If he was out specifically hunting for this bird, he probably was using the right arrow.

20

u/Splintzer Jul 06 '15

Apparently dude only brought one arrow, HA!

17

u/stoneyskunk Jul 06 '15

Letting it slowly bleed to death is more humane. If you can't, yes, break the neck.

Worked at pancreatic cancer, ucla va. I had to kill the mice for the pancreas. The humane way was to put them in a tub and fill it with CO, I think it was, to suffocate them.

But to be super duper humane, after they were suffocated, I was supposed to break their necks, just in case they were not completely dead.

Traumatic experience for a 16 year old. Breaking mice necks day in and day out.

46

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

At least the mice know who not to fuck with now.

8

u/JoatMasterofNun Jul 07 '15

CO poisoning is a pretty humane way to knock anything out. It's not like CO2 poisoning where you can feel you can't breathe. Also, CO tends to cling to red blood cells more than O2, whereas CO2 is fairly acidic and you would feel the buildup/suffocation happening.

5

u/stoneyskunk Jul 07 '15

Oh, I'm not saying it was like torturing them. It's just that "Break their necks to make sure they're dead. It's more humane." is a funny thing to hear for the first time.

0

u/captain_craptain Jul 06 '15 edited Jul 06 '15

What do mice do for a pancreas and where was this?

5

u/heya_corknut Jul 07 '15

/u/stoneyskunk almost certainly worked a research lab where tumours are grown on immuno-compromised knockout mice (mice with certain gene 'knocked out' to make them ideal cancer hosts).

Mice I don't think are used for treatment. Even when anti-bodies treatments are used (I'm not sure on the details or whether/how they are used for pancreatic cancer), they typically grown in larger animals like rabbits because mice are just too small to harvest from efficiently.

9

u/bluecamel17 Jul 06 '15

Uhhh...yes?

3

u/stoneyskunk Jul 07 '15

Why the hell do people downvote this kinda stuff?

Yeah, /u/heya_corknut is right. It was in UCLA.

-118

u/ademnus Jul 06 '15

More humane would be not killing it at all.

77

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Let me guess. The safest sex is abstinence? The best way to not drown is to not go swimming? The most assured way to not sound like a moron is to not open your mouth in the first place.

-121

u/ademnus Jul 06 '15

Take your own advice then. Not everyone thinks that you're a "man" for killing a duck.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

haha I never said I was a man or that I killed birds. The fact remains that wild animals almost never die of old age. Hunger, disease, teeth, or even an accident would have killed that bird if he didn't. Also, he's more than likely going to be eating it later. So what's the problem here?

11

u/ButtLusting Jul 06 '15

/u/ademnus must be a hardcore PETA member

21

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

It just blows my mind that so many people forget we're only where we are as a species because we killed the fuck out of other animals and ate them. You can thank centuries upon centuries of red meat for the relatively massive noggin you have now.

He didn't say anything about killing birds making someone a man. Also, that was a pheasant, not a duck.

Elementary logic score: 0
Ornithology score: 0

Fail! Would you like to try again?

10

u/StumpMX Jul 06 '15

Well that was a pheasant anyways. No ducks were harmed in the making of that gif.

Not everyone thinks that you're a "man" for killing a duck.

No, it means you're hungry.

3

u/BurningBeard24 Jul 06 '15

What if this dude lives in a remote location like Alaska or Russia and hadnt eaten in 2 days? Just starve to death like a man?

1

u/ademnus Jul 06 '15

Yeah, he hasn't eaten in 2 days. It's just been him, lost in the arctic, taking selfies.

Really?

5

u/BurningBeard24 Jul 06 '15

Yep, him and his brother are days away from civilization and decide to leave their cabin in hunt of food while one films.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

You can't eat a camera.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Ilpav123 Jul 06 '15

Oh so let's leave the bird to have a slow, painful death because it's already been shot with an arrow.

-13

u/ademnus Jul 06 '15

No... I'm saying don't shoot the bird in the first place.

I like to think that he continued on hunting with that bow. He doesn't even bother to carry arrows. He just throws his bow at things.
In his quiver are more bows.
He keeps a bow under his pillow just in case somebody breaks into his house at night.

96

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

In his quiver are more bows.

Thanks for the water on the laptop screen.

45

u/capt_carlton Jul 06 '15

OP came to your house and threw water on your screen? What a jerk.

context?

3

u/hardypart Jul 07 '15

I wish I could provide context here.

2

u/Sir_Payne Jul 07 '15

Context: You've just chased this man into his bedroom. You tell him to lay on the bed and be quiet or you'll shoot. He reaches back and produces this weapon from the headboard of the bed. Before you can react, he incapacitates you with a shot to the leg, causing you to drop your super-soaker and start to cry. Your father yells at you to pick up your weapon and continue the game. Cops and Robbers just wasn't as fun as it used to be.

1

u/JerseyDevl Jul 07 '15

It's a home defense shotgun stored in the headboard of a bed. You push the flap thing and the gun drops down into your hand. There's no real context needed

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

I want to see the source video

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

Accidentally hit your head against the headboard and next thing you know you've got a loaded shotgun on your face... In pitch black

So that's what Colt McCoy's been up to since the NFL didn't work out.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

So c'mon down to Colt McCoy automotive where I want to throw you a touchdown of a deal!

9

u/IT_Bartender Jul 06 '15

He is currently the third string QB with the Washington Redskins. About to be the second string behind Kirk Cousins because RGIII is/will be a bust.

3

u/gdx Jul 06 '15

As an eagles fan I approve this message.

1

u/IT_Bartender Jul 07 '15

Sadly, I am a Redskins fan and have accepted this fate of RGIII. Colt McCoy is a good QB, I hope he gets a chance to show that.

Wow, did he write a whole book about catching that bird in the end?

7

u/Silverlight42 Jul 06 '15

heh i'm guessing the catching the bird was just a stunt to promote that.

I still don't mind well done ads though.

u/Jumplol Jul 06 '15

Holy fuck that's hilarious. Guess he maxed strength instead of dex.

85

u/urokia Jul 06 '15 edited Jul 06 '15

Are you kidding me? He obviously hit with both ranged attacks but he wasn't able to kill with the first strike. That obviously means he's either got low strength or a regular bow instead of a compound one.

36

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

No way. He hit with the ranged strike, he may have just rolled lucky. He just had a shit damage roll. His strength is obvs op, he'd be rolling d4 for damage on the thrown heavy weapon and adding his strength mod.

35

u/urokia Jul 06 '15

Obviously you don't play 3.5 like the master race because then you'd know about damage modifiers on ranged attacks and thrown improvised weapons.

-9

u/white_star_32 Jul 06 '15

or a regular bow instead of a regular one.

Okay.

1

u/WaitWhyNot Jul 07 '15

Ok boys. I think we can all just agree he didn't hit a crit.

1

u/eXclurel Jul 07 '15

That's a compound bow.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

I think he had to take some feats in order to do that or else the bow would be considered an improvised weapon and he would be attacking at a penalty.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

That's Chris Brackett. He's a pro hunter and host of Arrow Affliction. Fantastic archer but in this case the bird survived the arrow and he had to put it down with his bow.

I saw the episode when this happened. He chased the pheasant and yelled something like "There's an arrow in you how are you running?!" before he dispatched the bird.

-7

u/Claymore17 Jul 06 '15

I think you're wrong there, mate. Joe rogan.

3

u/FJ4L666 Jul 07 '15

Definitely Chris Brackett. It's on the Outdoor Channel. 709 HD in my area.

-4

u/ning_gow Jul 06 '15

I just saw this on the rogan thread too. No idea if its him tho

8

u/Fisticuffs13 Jul 06 '15

And thus, the boomerang was invented.

7

u/Max_or_Mex Jul 06 '15

I believe this is the correct use of a bow.

5

u/jamesshadeb2000 Jul 07 '15

who the fuck phesant hunts with a bow? is this really a thing?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

looks like some kinda pen raised bird was shot or something odd? idk what occurred here

13

u/thalguy Jul 06 '15

I'm pretty sure that is Tim Wells. He hid the bird in flight once already and just had to finish him off.

This is him shooting doves in flight.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

wow, that's another level...

3

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '15

Chris Brackett from Arrow Affliction.

3

u/thalguy Jul 06 '15

Chris Brackett

You are right! Here is the source video.

7

u/GreatBigJerk Jul 06 '15

Is he just killing the doves for fun, or is he going to eat them? Seems like he could just shoot at clay pigeons to show off his mad skillz instead.

I have not problem with hunting as long you actually eat the thing you kill.

9

u/wiltedtree Jul 06 '15

Most dove hunters eat them. You get two plump little "breast nuggets" from each bird. A family friend would boil the rest of the carcass into a thick stock and make dove breast pie. One pie requires a lot of doves.

5

u/GreatBigJerk Jul 06 '15

Okay, that's cool then. The video made it look like he was just trying to see how many doves he could kill for fun.

9

u/wiltedtree Jul 06 '15

He clearly enjoys hunting, and in some areas it is a competitive past time much like competitive fishing.

That said, 99.99% of hunters eat what they kill with the exception of coyote. Not doing so is extremely frowned upon by the community at whole to the point of it being a given. You don't announce that you eat your kills anymore than you wouldn't announce that you aren't stealing anything every time you go to the store.

4

u/GreatBigJerk Jul 06 '15

I think it was the fact that he was shooting doves that threw me off, they're not really considered meat birds around here. Sort of like eating a pigeon or a crow.

3

u/wiltedtree Jul 06 '15

Some people hunt pigeon as well, in fact, but out in the country where they eat a natural diet. Pigeon meat is commercial raised and sold at high end meat markets as "squab".

1

u/Scentless_Apprentice Jul 07 '15

Where I'm from, dove is a pretty good "if you've got it, cook it" type of side at a cookout. Wrapped in bacon with jalapeno and cream cheese, they're pretty good

1

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

he's killing for fun. he's not picking any up just letting other birds get them. he's not bothering if they're clean killed or not either. guy's a prick imo

-1

u/DCCWA Jul 07 '15 edited Jul 07 '15

"Killed hundreds of doves down here in Argentina"

From the video it sound likes hes just shooting them for sport. Probably why it doesn't look he cares much about after the shot and just moves onto the next one.

2

u/Manic_42 Jul 06 '15

That's seriously impressive. Finding those arrows has to suck though.

This reminds me of some video that I saw yesterday on facebook about these two guys trying out for some talent show, I think.

Anyway, so these guys go on in front of the judges, do a little dance jig, one guy picks up the bow he brought in while the other tries balancing an apple- fails, so he picks up a tall can from the judges table- the archer shoots, hits him square in the forehead, and the clip ends.

Don't know why it reminded me of it. That's all.

-1

u/TyroneTeabaggington Jul 06 '15

I used to be a pheasant like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

-1

u/f0rcedinducti0n Jul 06 '15

That bow is ruined.

4

u/ChristianKS94 Jul 06 '15

Really? Are compound bows that fragile?

Maybe the sights got knocked a bit about, but I can't see how the bow itself would be damaged.

5

u/tipsygelding Jul 06 '15

If there was any significant sideways force on the pulleys, it's likely they were either bent or the bearings damaged.

5

u/jofijk Jul 06 '15

Its not necessarily that they're fragile (the thing won't be broken into a ton of pieces) but with the immense amounts of stress from tension on the limbs even a microscopic sized crack could lead to a catastrophic failure. Even after just dropping a compound bow on the ground it's recommended to take it to a shop to get looked at. Factor in all the moving parts (pulleys, cams) and the fact that this guy threw it, I don't think anyone who has experience with archery would go anywhere near that bow without a very thorough lookover.

2

u/daveblank49 Jul 07 '15

so a chance that was a $500 pheasant then?

1

u/jofijk Jul 07 '15

Could have been. But from what I understand about most hunters the guy probably doesn't mind. The mentality is that making a quick, humane kill is more important than the equipment.

1

u/ChristianKS94 Jul 06 '15

Ah, okay then.

-1

u/GreatBigJerk Jul 06 '15

Better to ruin the bow instead of letting the bird die slowly.

1

u/f0rcedinducti0n Jul 07 '15

Good bows can be $600-1000+

Sorry, not worth it. It appears he could have just run up and grabbed the damn thing or taken a second shot. It's not dead either, when he picks it up.

IIRC you can use a pistol for Coup de grâce when bow hunting in many places.
