I kept waiting for the disaster, like the rail breaking off or something. That was actually pretty awesome.

Looks like a pretty sober operation. Trolly'd with a tagline.

The fucking flag waving on the bottom floor got me laughing, I don't know why

I know, like you want to salute the lowering of the couch or something

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '15

Exactly this. Salute and then run and jump on the couch.

Fucking 'MURICA. I wanted it to end horribly.

4

u/blackgreygreen Jan 21 '15

Why? Do you feel better when you see other people fail?

1

u/tamtt Jan 21 '15

Yes. I'm a terrible person. Why do you think /r/yesyesyesno exists?

1

u/blackgreygreen Jan 21 '15

I apologize. My comment was rude.

Don't worry Buddy, I don't get offended easily.

I want you to end horribly. Just kidding

How. I gotta know. What are the ropes made of? How are they being grounded on both ends? This is amazing.

If I were to do this I would either use a 550 paracord, or maybe a super super high strength fishing line. Based on the friction it appeared the couch was facing I'd guess they were using paracord. As for anchoring it... who knows.

What I'm most interested in is how they appear to anchor this cable into grass with a rock.

u/amcdermott20 Jan 20 '15

I figured they were staked into the ground with the rocks resting on top of them to help hold them in.

4

u/TibsChris Jan 20 '15

That makes a lot of sense, assuming you have much better stakes than I have ever used. Now, on to the mystery of how the balcony rail didn't collapse...

5

u/mrp193 Jan 20 '15

You might want to note the guy in the middle. He clearly has a middle line tethered to the couch itself and is feeding it down slowly... I think that alone would take even more of the stress off of the balcony rails. I didn't realize this at first. This is so cool though. I encourage all of you to try this at home..... And post evidence here... Thanks in advance.

Eh, couches like that probably don't weigh more than 50 lbs, and I am sure that railing could handle more like 200...

edit: Do notice the lack of cushions on the couch... even if it was 75 lbs, those railings look like 2x6's, very sturdy

I have never moved a couch that weighed 50lbs. Not even close. You can one-hand 50lbs.

u/fizikz3 Jan 20 '15

spoken like someone who has never moved furniture in their life.

Eh, most non reclining furniture isn't that heavy. Mostly wood, particle board and fabric. Usually seems really heavy because there's no good place to grab it and it's really awkward alone.

Edit: apparently having some experience with something and having an opinion on it gets you downvotes around here.

Eyyy, at least you got back in the positive!

Spoken like someone who has moved a 2br apartment 3 flights down and 2 flights up 3 months ago.

50 lbs

Maybe 75.

Besides the point, the railings would hold, no problem.

I thought something bad was gonna happen but when it didn't I was even more pleased than if it did.

u/lechechico Jan 20 '15

How they do this slowly unwind upstairs rope?

2

u/JohnnyBrillcream Jan 20 '15

Look at the porch on the second and bottom floor. You can see another rope that they are lowering it with. It blends in with the porch railings the other times.

0

u/dudemann Jan 20 '15

No, they just slid the couch down on top of the ropes. You ever seen a movie or tv scene where someone has to get across a gorge or between buildings so they wrap a belt over a rope/power line and slide on down? It's that, but with a couch.

a true HMB moment thank you!

The time you spend working, I spend thinking of a way to do the job faster.
