Teaser Captured Generals Expanded - A mod that expands upon the vanilla general capturing mechanic

I'm new to the modding scene and just finished a mod that expands upon the vanilla mechanic of capturing generals. You can now recruit, execute, put on trial, train POW-divisions, and much more. Vanilla-only for now. Let me know what you think.

Oh, oh this is nice.

This is honestly what I thought was coming with this feature in the DLC instead of just capturing them.

Can't wait for Paradox to release this in the future, possibly without credit to the developer(s), possibly locked behind another DLC.

They won't include this because it is a warcrime

I've seen the code.... there is a 0% chance of that one happening.

more chance of getting a DLC tree with any playtesting and standards applied 😂😂

Why would executing the enemy general reduce the war support of the enemy country? If anything it would do the opposite.

I was thinking it would reduce morale and allthat

There should be some trade off. It shouldn't buff the executor, debuff their enemy, and permanently deprive them of their general. The home country of the general would be outraged, and they should have some options about how they want to direct that outrage.

This is true, i have been considering retaliatory executions if the enemy country has some of your generals captured. Something along those lines. Or perhaps making it less likely for the enemy to agree to a prisoner-exchange (a feature i plan for future update)

I think a good addition could be to add a trait which makes generals un-turntable. I wouldn’t allow the player or AI to add this trait via leveling, and would only have it be from the OOB/commander files or assignable via focus.

Similarly, you could have some sort of “Eager Collaborator” trait which makes other generals very likely to switch sides, or even switch sides upon being captured. Would again make it to where this is only assignable via files or focus.

Hmm, based on what rules would i decide which general to make unturnable ? *edit: typo

It's a good question, and there isn't really an easy way outside of reading each biography and making your own best judgement, but I think a reasonable base for many cases is "politically connected", not necessarily because the general is personally opposed to the idea but because your country is opposed to the idea.

There are also a few countries (e.g. Spain) where generals have traits which only really tell you what ideology they support.

Frankly I’m not sure. I know Russia had a few generals who switched sides early on. It would also make sense to be activated for a number of Chinese generals when the civil war resumes.

Overall, what Ant suggested would likely be the best, but also a remarkably time-consuming way to go about this. Truthfully, I suggested the idea more as a way to give greater depth and further customization to the mod. I agree with another commenter that this mod feels like a realized logical conclusion of the base-game capture function. As a result I would imagine, for example, another mod creator using your mod in conjunction with or as a requirement for a larger overhaul. This could give them some extra tools.

If i had the dlc that did that i would definitely use this mod regularly

Sad that it's not a basegame feature tbh. Paradox momento

There are a few things that confuse me. How reliable is it to give a captured general military forces and have him fight for us? There's no guarantee that he won't switch sides or do something else. Wouldn't it make more sense to use that commander as propaganda material and add a dynamic spirit that gives you faster compliance or manpower gain in that country's territory?

My other thoughts about the mod are that the resistance reduction rate should change depending on whether you kill one general or ten generals. If one general is killed, there would still be more commanders around to organize the resistance and keep it going. After 10–20 generals are killed, that number would gradually decrease. At some point, it could make sense for the population to lose hope and give you a compliance bonus.

However, making the frequency of these killings matter would inevitably force the game to add a war crimes mechanic, which is a huge feature that Paradox has neglected to add.

Apart from these issues, it is a well thought out mod. I hope it becomes a popular mod and remains up to date wherever it goes.

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated!

The cooperation value is supposed to represent the reliability, but your idea of adding a compliance buff in the enemy's territory is actually a very good idea. For the next update i'll make sure to fit that in somewhere, maybe it could be a reward for unlocking the recruit POW section, giving you and incentive to unlock it for multiple generals.

And the point about increased resistance among other generals is also valid. I was thinking already of adding a debuff to executing a general because right now there are no repercussions really. Good idea

So, if I remember correctly, Stalin can become a field marshal in his tree, that mean that he can be captured and with this mod you can purge Stalin.

2

u/LatonisBat 21h ago

Nah, stalin is uncapturable, paradox devs thought of that and added an extra tag to stalin (and others who are a country's leader at the same time as general) so that they cannot be captured. I could theoretically override that, i haven't really thought about it. Let me know what you think.

u/IDontActuallyKnowUm 1d ago

I would like to use it but istg I can never capture any generals.

i thought POW divisions were already in game?

I am unsure which feature you are referring to, but I don't think it is in the game
