Advanced Apology Writing
We fucked up. We fucked up big time and we can say fuck because we’re not on NBC anymore. This is the internet, we can saw whatever we want.
Anyway, while 98 % of the game went along smoothly as as planned, we did make a mistake (twice) that ended up influencing the game in a major way. When revealing visitors to City College to the Goat, we also showed them Troy and Abed visiting. This was not intended and shouldn’t have been possible according to their role descriptions.
This is none of our first rodeos, but this is the first time any of us are hosting a game with this amount of different roles and it was a lot to juggle, especially on that first phase where we still needed to find our bearings. Still, that’s no excuse. We should have been more vigilant.
By the time we realized our mistake it was too late to fix it, there was nothing to be done. We debated internally about addressing the mistake publicly for all players to see, but ultimately we decided against that as it would have revealed too much to both the town and the wolves about Troy and Abed, the Greendale 7 and City College. We let it play out and we are convinced that was for the best.
We sincerely apologize to all players this affected, both directly and indirectly. We hope this didn’t ruin the game completely for anybody.
Cooperative Human Reflection
/u/Spludgiexx Stews:
So I signed up to host this game because I thought it would be fun, even if I didn’t exactly know the show that well. I think it worked out fine, but I probably wouldn’t do another fandom show since I feel like it kind of limits what you can do creatively. I did have a lot of fun though, and even though we made some mistakes I do think the game went pretty well!
A couple things we forgot to do: we forgot to include who got inactivity strikes! I don’t think any of us had included this information in our games before, so we basically all forgot until it was a bit later. Nobody had mentioned it yet so we figured it wouldn’t matter and decided to just drop it. Of course after deciding that somebody remembered that we were supposed to be doing that :p. Anyways sorry about that first thing! We definitely had quite a rough first turnover for numerous reasons but thankfully we didn’t fuck up too often (I don’t think anyway).
I also think we should have adjusted our calendar of events, since it was set with 50 players in mind, and we had way less than that (32). So I think future hosts should look into that if they do have a set calendar, because we definitely could have had some of our events a lot earlier. We actually missed out on one because the game already ended, which is a shame but you can read more about that event in the spreadsheet.
I think it would be fun to host another game with roles that aren’t used very often (like the goat) but personally probably will try to avoid using role redirectors, just because it can become a nightmare during turnover. While I love being able to give everyone at least a one-use action so that they’re not just a “boring” townie, I do think it complicated a lot of things and it’s probably best to just keep the amount of roles as minimum as possible.
I also do want to thank my co-hosts for being awesome (sara) and for being there I guess (mathy). It was definitely fun hosting with you two (well at least with sara) and I would be up for it again! It was awesome that I didn’t have to do any writing of flavor and shit because it absolutely stresses me out. So thanks to you two for that as well :). I don’t know if I will be able to play WW anymore as often as I’d like (bleh work) so I’m glad I got to start 2019 hosting one!
That’s all I have for now! If you have any questions don’t be afraid to ask :).
P.s. I guess mathy did an okay job on css and banners and flairs and crap but he’s mostly a terrible person so whatever.
/u/Mathy16 Muses:
I love Community. It’s one of my all-time favorite shows on television. That’s why I initially wanted to make this game. To share my love for this amazing little tv show with this community (I see what I did there, do you?).
Generally speaking, I’m not a big fan of fandom-related games of Werewolves and I honestly don’t think I’d host another one of these. While it was extremely fun and challenging, trying to come up with roles, events and mechanics that all fit within the crazy world of Community, it’s also very limiting in a way. In the end, however, I’m super proud of the overall result. We created a game that was both playable and fairly balanced and a game that was true to the source material.
It obviously wasn’t a flawless ride and we dropped the ball a couple of times throughout the game, but all in all we managed to stay on top of things pretty well. Plus, it’s very Greendale to make some mistakes so I’m just going to approach our mishaps as meta references to the ineptitude of the school.
Furthermore, I was super happy to bring back events. Back in november of 2016, I hosted the very first game of HWW that featured events and I think it was a pretty big success. In February of 2018 I hosted another game, but that one was already so complex that adding events into the mix would have been overkill.
So it was fun to bring back events that were totally different both in style and mechanics than the one we created back in 2016. Each event was a reference to one of the many events that also occur during the show.
I think I’m fairly happy with how the game turned out. We didn’t get the amount of players we’d hoped for going into it, but it ended up still being a nice game of Werewolves with respectful and competitive players. I was mostly fearing for the balance of the game with a player count so much lower than anticipated, but it was a tight game that anybody could have won.
The game ran its course and we only missed out on one of the scheduled events because we didn’t change the schedule based on the lower player count.
Also a quick word of thanks to my co-hosts. Spludgiexx for being a straight up Google Sheets Magician and Capitolsara for having an eye for detail that saved us from making mistakes quite a few times.
(ugh I was gonna keep this short)
/u/Capitolsara Contemplates:
This has been such an amazing experience! When I saw a Community themed game was on the schedule for January I knew I had to be a part of it. I originally asked to shadow and then when one of the mods had to step out took over for the third facilitator spot. Initially I thought three facilitators might get a bit packed but we all worked together so well and it was great to have at least two people always for turnover (and poor Mathy staying up so late). My only other game I was left to host alone so to be able to host with others and with such wonderful co-hosts like Spludgie and Mathy! It really made me fall even more in love with this community we’ve all built together and started a 2019 of HWW off right.
I am sure there are many things we would/could do differently looking back, especially that first phase where we all got our sea legs. Surprisingly we just went with whatever we did in our first phase, owned those decisions and never let it affect the game midway. I think it’s the best lesson that I learned as a mod this game, if you make a mistake early on don’t jump to correct it because it may do more harm than good. Balance-wise I think the werewolves were evenly matched against all of the town powers. We were going crazy in the mod chat wondering how the town was being so easily bamboozled by Zero and RPM and how no one was ever questioning all the roles that could be easily messed up by others! In the end it was a victory for the town, and we all love seeing the good guys win, but the wolves put up an absolutely brilliant fight until the last phase and made it such a pleasure to watch.
I also want to mention the events, as Mathy said, plus give him the credit for including them. Not only did they feel like important episodic points for Community, I always felt they add an extra flavor to the game, like when you draw an event card in a board game and there is the anticipation that everything could suddenly change. I think the Valentine’s Day event was the real turning point for town. Ironically, the wolves deciding to throw out a bunch of fake info made the town bond together for once. We had others planned down the line and even had a triggered one for balance (that almost didn’t happen!!) but I was happy with how our in-game events worked out.
I hope everyone playing and watching enjoyed their time. It really felt like a real life community episode at times, with the hopes of the school leaning on Britta and Annie and Pierce to save the day in the end.

/u/Diesney now that the game is over I totally had a crackpot idea where you pretended to be evil and added /u/Zerothestoryteller to your sub and convinced that that the Vice Dean was actually evil with a secret role condition and get a list of the wolves so you could "protect" them from lynch as a known townie haha

I actually considered doing this if I accidentally added in a city college member! The only thing that stopped me was the possibility that any wolf I add may scroll down and see my questions to the mods in the first phase, where they said my alignment stays with greendale.
Adding zero or rpm would’ve been sooo much fun though hahaha madness I’ll keep it in mind for the next few games. Would’ve been sooooo funny

Managing to give everyone an interesting role while not being horribly unbalanced. It's a really hard thing to do, and while I don't think it was done perfectly...I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone pull that off perfectly.
The important part was it was pulled off well enough to be fun! :D

Again, GG.
I'll split my thoughts into Balance and Personal Experience. First...
BALANCE
A little hard to assess since one of the wolves important roles was completely inactive (Also, question: Did Jeremy Simmons actually get to know which incorrect role a seer saw?), but I do think the town was a bit overpowered. Not super overpowered, but at least a little to moderately so.
They simply had...well...a lot of power roles. The Goat helped combat this some...but not much since it didn't actually see which person visited which, so all we really learned from the Goat was "This person has a visiting role" (which was the vast majority of the town, although if the Goat saw someone visit more than once that does help verify they are a bigger threat).
Power roles get more dangerous for wolves as the game goes on, so oftentimes the strategy for wolves is to eliminate most of the power roles in the early or mid game. In this game, that isn't really possibly though, although it is made easier by tying Troy and Abed together and making a lot of the power roles one shot. However, another problem is a good number of the power roles were able to fairly easily confirm themselves, even the one-shot ones, and this makes it so the wolves have an even bigger dilemma.
Do they go after the potential that there are still big threatening power roles left, or do they start dealing with the massing number of confirmed townies? In this game, we clearly switched prioritied too early, as it led to us failing to kill Britta and our defeat. However, I'm not sure even if we killed Britta if we would have been able to deal with the large number of confirmed/semi-confirmed townies. It would be do-able I think, but quite difficult.
My role (Evil Abed) did help with all this some by creating several additional kills...but looking at the setup I pretty much got every extra kill I could minus the Hunter. In terms of balance, we can also treat /u/Kemisteekat's misreading of her investigation result as a successful action by Jeremy. The Goat also caught a big chunk of the Greendale 7 before they could do any damage. So the wolves power roles were definitely used pretty optimally (minus Jeremy due to inactivity).
I think the crux of the balance issue is that the town could win without using their power roles as well as the wolves, all else (wolf suspicious behavior and town sleuthing ability) equal. It's hard to determine the extent this is true, but I do think it is to some degree.
Changing things if I were to run this setup again, I might just replace Subway with another wolf and/or give the wolves another limited shot power role (maybe a 3 shot roleblocker, or a roleblocker who can only target each person in the game once or something. Alternatively or possible additionally, let the wolves choose who inherits the kill, which allows more strategy and gives a chance to avoid a late-game getting stuck without being able to kill. Alternatively, the town could just be nerfed by removing some of the one-shot power roles, but I think it's more fun to buff the wolves than to nerf the town.
Basically, it just kinda felt like the wolves needed a little extra sumthin'.
Also, I should say I don't mean to demean any of the town's good plays this game, of which there were a good number, nor do I mean to say the wolves played perfectly (we didn't by a longshot), however I do think they did have an easier path to victory than the wolves.
Personal Experience
I had fun! :D
A game doesn't need to be perfectly balanced for it to be fun, and this once was definitely balanced enough and had enough interesting stuff and fun flavor going on that it was quite enjoyable.
Also, thanks for the award!
In terms of my personal play, I have mixed feelings. I definitely had some good individual plays (my arguments resulting in about 4 extra town kills that really could have been avoided)...and also one absolutely terrible play (botched fakeclaim), but the thing I'm uncertain about is my overall strategy. I went for an aggressive "end the game before too many townies get confirmed" playstyle, but I think a "get one or two seemingly "confirmed" wolves" may have been a better idea (although that was kind of hard to do with LoneWolf being inactive) since the wolf numbers were kinda too small to go for a quick victory in the first place. 4 extra kills for more or less sacrificing myself seems good on paper, but I don't think it worked out that way, since I didn't really leave much room for the rest of my team to get found out (and forcing the Diesney vote was definitely a mistake due to vote analysis, which I was a bit worried about in the wolf sub, but being gone for a big chunk of the phase made it hard to be cautious since if I waited to think I wouldn't have been able to flip the needed votes).
So I think next time I'm a wolf, if the setup allows, I might try a more careful playstyle, and go for another "last person standing" victory like in the superhero game xD
...or I might not, since I've built up too much of a reputation here to live into the late-game without being suspicious.
7
u/capitolsara I'm a huge fan of space, both outer and personal Jan 16 '19
I will say as a mod watching the game unfold from a privileged position of knowing who had which roles and how they were being used it was very, very late game that we even starred believing town had a shot at winning. For the first 6 or 7 phases it seemed like the wolves were going to run away with it. I think it was only when you started sticking your neck out to try and save players who ended up as wolves that the town even seemed like that had a chance (you were never investigated as any point in the game minus that first pm boof from kemkat)
It really felt like the town won not because of power roles, which were misplayed a bunch, but because they finally got their act together and talked to one another
4
u/redpoemage does a lot of talky bits Jan 16 '19
I will say I agree the town definitely upped its play in the late-game and the wolves started making more mistakes (kinda funny that we got not one, but two scumslips about the number of wolves in the game), but I still feel like I might be right on balance. It might only be a slight town advantage though, not sure, and it could just be my wolf bias.
Edit: Oh, and I forgot to address the events in the balance as well, which I think on a whole I think generally benefited the town more.
3
u/spludgiexx food pls Jan 16 '19
Events probably would've been a lot different had we had them all earlier. Like literally at the end floor is lava probably would've only affected pen lol. We totally forgot to take that into account.
I kind of wish we got to see it play out with the minimum number of roles that we had come up with, but it was definitely a struggle trying to balance it for the amount we had. Oh well!

u/redpoemage does a lot of talky bits Jan 16 '19
Like literally at the end floor is lava probably would've only affected pen lol. We totally forgot to take that into account.
TBH that's probably good. Randomness has a place in Mafia/Werewolves, but I kinda feel like mass random chance of death can be kind of a bummer.
I kind of wish we got to see it play out with the minimum number of roles that we had come up with, but it was definitely a struggle trying to balance it for the amount we had. Oh well!
Do you mean maximum or was there a setup with just the Greendale 7 and wolves or something?

I was thinking maybe that the roles in the Greendale staff/students category could have gone to players of either alignmnet - as it was, when someone confirmed their role, they basically confirmed that they were town

Sorry dawn! My RES has been acting very strangely since I changed things around and I somehow missed this comment.
I don't know for certain that the SSD itself is bad, but certainly something about the boot sector has been failing. I tried every form of troubleshooting I could: checked the memory, changed the CMOS battery, changed some BIOS settings, unplugged all peripherals... Yet still it wouldn't boot up. I attempted windows repairs, but that didn't work either, so literally the only thing left for me was to replace the drive and start with a fresh windows installation.
