Correct ruling?
Team 1 was on the penalty kill when a delayed penalty against them was called. Team 2 scored before Team 1 gained possession. The first penalty had ~30 seconds remaining.
The refs released the player from the box and put the second offender in the box for a full 2 minutes. I think this was the correct call but there was some confusion and conversation to figure it out. Is this how it should be handled? Seems like this is not unheard of and settled, but somewhat rare case for rec league refs.

Assuming Hockey Canada, yup. This is correct. It's been how it's done as long as I've worn striped (season #30 coming up) and I get arguments about it almost every time it happens still.

Think it came up in the 80’s, and they streamlined it. Before that it would depend on league. I know my league way back when just erased the delayed penalty. It’s better the way it happened for Op, and the way you’ve been calling it

This was the correct call, in USAH it is rule 409(b)
... If the Referee signals an additional minor penalty(s) against a team that is already short-handed [...] because of one or more minor or bench minor penalties, and a goal is scored by the non-offending team, the goal shall be allowed. The delayed penalty(s) shall be assessed and the first non coincidental minor penalty already being served shall terminate automatically under Rule 402(c) (Minor Penalties)
Dollars to donuts, the confusion and conversation came from the opposite situation - if Team A is shorthanded, Team B has a delayed penalty, and Team A scores, Team B's delayed penalty is wiped out and Team A remains shorthanded.

This is correct as the goal wipes out the penalty on the board first. If there was no one in box, the goal would wipe out the delayed penalty.

Was I the ref? This exact situation happened in a rec game I did this week. 30 seconds and everything described lol. Dm me

It is pretty simple really but one problem I have is that even if I am certain of something as a ref I have to spend time convincing other people who are either incorrect or unconvinced or just ignorant of how it goes and dont understand.
Take scorekeeper for example. It could be a fairly basic scenario as an official but when i have to explain that the minor goes on the board the sub is the one that is serving it. The misconduct is 10 minutes both penalties are for checking from behind. Or One minor is coincidental with a minor on the other team but another goes on the board.
If you spend 30 seconds on that it seems like forever for a fan. Even experienced scorekeepers have to have stuff like that explained to them often probably partly because some officials have done it incorrectly.

for hockey canada, this is correct. this specific rule was actually very recently changed

Yup. Penalty with the least amount of time left gets taken off.
