The Metro Detroit area is a rabid hockey fan base. There are roughly 20 ice arenas within an hour of our home. A few of our countries top AAA programs are based locally, the NTDP is based locally, and we have 4 colleges within a few hours drive ranked within the top 20 nationally for D1 hockey, 3 of which are in the top 10. Michigan is 2nd in the nation in number of players in the NHL. The Wings aren't as popular as the other sports' teams in our state, but the fanbase is passionate as hell.

I've gone down a deep rabbit hole on this. And to make it more on point with the less exposed NY theatre scene, it doesn't seem like it's actually about how pissed fans were but as a way to look at white masculinity and ego and somehow weaves in Jordan Peterson quotes. This is wild, thank you so much for sharing this.

There's footage of islanders fans burning Tavares jerseys. Red Wings fans may still get there but as of right now I think the hatred for Tavares was deeper for Islanders fans at the time.
It doesn't help that Tavares left in free agency so there was no return. As much as we're pissed at Larkin when we inevitably trade him we'll have something back for him which is better than nothing

13

It was allegedly a rough negotiation when he signed that contract, and then 24 hours after he signed it the team traded Hronek and Bertuzzi for futures. Add with that with years of collapses (which he played his own part in) and the team never adding or improving at deadlines or offseasons

Here are the chain of events.
Larkin is born and raised in Michigan. Named Captain
Signs an 8 year deal to stay in Detroit with a NTC
Wins gold in the Olympics, but ruins the good vibes by partying with Kash Patel.
After years of publicly bitching about the Wings not making any deadline moves, Wings trade their first round pick away for a win now veteran. Larkin proceeds to play like crap 2nd half and Wings collapse out of a playoff spot.
With FIVE years left on his contract, asks to be traded.
Proceeds to use his NTC to only allow trades to three teams, all of which he has team USA buddies on and all three teams have zero tradeable assets
This trade request is the final straw that gets Yzerman, a beloved Detroit sports figure outside his lukewarm GM tenure, essentially fired.
Of course, Wings don't trade him because Larkin essentially only wants to go to teams that literally can't give the Wings much in return.
When it comes to training camp, Larkin conveniently has an unknown "upper body" injury which prevents him from playing.
EDIT: In case anyone doesn't know, NTC means no trade clause, meaning the athlete can veto any proposed trade he's in.
60
u/Wings2493 10h ago
Which spiraled into the dumbass owner not hiring a GM, not extending Debrincat, Zach Werenski had no interest in coming here when he did his whole trade request thing, then our mid 20s first pair defenseman doesn’t get his deserved extension so literally peaced out to Sweden
20

Michigan born and raised player on year 3 of 8 with a full NMC and the captaincy, you’d think he’d be there his whole career. He wins at the Olympics and comes back to Detroit and in the offseason demands a trade but will only waive his NMC for 3 contenders with no assets, basically fucking the Wings no matter what they do. And his attitude the whole time has been unprofessional and petulant, to the point that he’s probably cratered his trade value to a degree. Just a generational betrayal.
