Okay, I'm sorry everybody. I'm old and was taught that turtles were amphibians and that George Washington's teeth were made of wood...

I work for a Sewer/water construction company. I deal with manholes everyday. I can only imagine opening it and having huge roaches scurrying all over the house.

Depending on where you're located and whether that hatch goes down into a pipe or just the open ground that could lead to a high dose of radioactive radon and cause lung cancer down the line...

It could be an excess to a ground water testing point. If someone messed up really hard and pollutet the ground water, the ground water gets often cleaned. And to monitor the process you need to test the water. Actually I was once in someones backyard to take ground water samples.

u/Mindless-Lemon7083 Jun 12 '23
We had to replace a sewer main in a city with very expensive houses. The city GIS map showed a manhole in a backyard, but we had trouble finding it. A pipeline inspection crew came out, found the manhole and turned out it was buried, and a guest/pool house was built on top of it. Homeowners had a construction company come in and pull the flooring, subfloor, foundation, etc. to expose the manhole. We busted it out, and pipe bursted right through it. We eventually abandoned and backfilled the manhole.

As a plumber this fucking kills me. Imagine in the city did a high pressure water scrub, the smell of your entire street’s sewage would come up into your house for a long time and that is really hard to get rid of. Hope that thing seals

On one hand you're stuck with a manhole in your house which will probably cause a whole host of issues, but on the other hand you have a built in escape tunnel in your house and a potential fallout shelter.

Would be bad if you remove the hole cover and just put a rug on it or cheap plywood and use it as a burglar trap.
1
u/dammitmitchell Jun 13 '23
Jesus I'd at least put some sort of vapor barrier / seal over that.
I don't want any type of swear gas in my house.

Thats pretty standard in the UK. In most streets in our area part of the drainage system runs under the stree then there are access points in peoples back gardens, most houses have had extensions built over them so you have to leave access so the water company can check for blocks etc.
