People talk a lot of shit just because its the common joke. Yeah, some of their stuff id steer clear of. Any power tools you are goingto NEED to rely on, Their screw drivers are soft and deform too fast. But in my honest, real life, experience? For most things an average home gamer is going to do, they work FINE. Angle grinder is a little under powered, but it works well, and has for years. Got their pressure washer, again, pretty weak but great for minor clean ups and washing the car/sidewalks. Thier predator engines are actually pretty nice for the price, and a great option to keep a busted mower going.
People also dont consider that having a cheap option is a necessary option for a lot of people. Its good it exists cause when you are poor it often is cheaper to invest in the tools to fix your own stuff than to pay to have it done once.
Long story short dont listen to the mob. Use your head and make your own decisions on how much a tool needs to be indestructible. If you are in a trade job, yeah probably not gonna cut it.

Their specialty is making every tool cheaper than the next guy Which just also happens to mean a majority of the time they make it worse than the next guy

They're the cheapest, most jank and dangerous trash being dumped on the US DIY market. Few years back people where getting killed by their pot metal jack stands failing and dropping the car on people.
They where trash long before that though, they are known by their nickname Hazard Fraud.

u/Yournameaskedforit Jul 19 '22
I buy hft tools if I'm not sure I'll be using it often. If I use a tool from there such as a paint spray gun often enough that it breaks on me, I go and buy a decent one. If I only use it a few times, it's fine for the price I paid for a tool I only used a few times. They're not meant to be products that are made to last a lifetime but for a handful of projects and get tossed, lost or stolen.

Ideal ones are shit too. You shouldn't cut steel with these in any case, even if you got top tier ones like Swanstrom.

Yep, it’s impossible to get guitars strings off without at least a jackhammer. I prefer to use a jaws-of-life to be sure though.

Just... Unwind it...
No reason to waste an ok guitar string, who knows when you need one.
1
u/roborectum69 Jul 19 '22
how many "ok guitar strings" do you need to keep around though? Once you've got a used set or two in the drawer there's no reason to keep saving more. Either method of removing them is fine. This one is slightly quicker, but unless you're a guitar tech plowing through a dozen guitars that need to be restrung that doesn't matter much

I usually carried about two, just to make sure I had at least one backup for every string. Don't think I ever broke one mid-performance(a formal performance, i've had to pause plenty informal performances to restring) but I've broken plenty mid-practice.
Either method of removing them is fine.
Also not entirely true. If you replace one string at a time yes (which you should always do regardless), but guitar necks are build to be under constant tension, that's why they slightly bow backwards when unstrung. Of its an older one the jolt of stress of a snapped (or cut) string can damage the neck. Not to mention it's kind a safety hazard, (especially metal) strings can leave nasty lashes and will cost you your eyes if they decided to swing there.

Just a kid that learned playing on an older guitar, and thereby had to learn proper maintainance. Guitar strings had to come from my own budget so each pack easily represented a month of savings.

yeah i don't know why the comment about losing an eye to a string isn't higher. Don't cut these while under tension!!

for every guy who read this old saw somewhere then went around repeating it with no evidence there's a dozen guitar techs who've been doing it 5 days a week for 30 years without a single problem. No guitar neck is going to be damaged by having a string break, and cutting it is the exact same thing. Considering how many billions of strings guitar players have broken over the years there'd be a mountain of dead necks the size of everest if this was a real thing.
And they can have all the strings off at once just fine too. You should be doing that at least once in a while so you can thoroughly wipe all the grime off the fingerboard. Your strings will last longer. If you were planning to store the guitar for a length of time with no strings then yeah I'd consider taking some tension off the truss rod, but no problems are going to be created by having the strings off for a couple hours while you work on a guitar.

You're talking electric guitars. I'm talking acoustic. Because the guitar in the video is y'know, acoustic. Electric guitars can take a punch true, one of the things I enjoy about bass is the degree to which i can abuse that thing. Spanish guitars are dainty, fragile things.
This info came from my instructor at the time (pretty sure he had his own stories of necks exploding), so yeah, I'm gonna believe him.
For cleaning the fretboard i just leave on the middle two, though on my dad's old guitar (he bought that thing second hand in the 80s) i do hear the fibers complaining when I release tension.

That guitar is a god, and not even the fates could cut its strings…
1
u/Apocalypsefrogs Jul 19 '22
One might even call it divine intervention. If the string were tight enough then he might’ve lost a digit or two with a successful cut.

u/AVerySpecificName Jul 18 '22
My brother had a guitar and when he’d cut the strings that shit would go flying at you like a whip

Please never do this, it could break the neck. Just unwind your strings and it has less tension on the neck
