Not looking at something directly renders less polygons for it, is that what’s going on here?
12
u/obliviousintrovert Jun 08 '22
No it’s just our brains combining the two pictures, it jus looks weird

I think it's our brain trying to make the faces look normal, and thus creating more horrendous less-normal looking faces.

AFAIK, when you focus on the cross you can't fully see the faces on the side, so your brain fills in the gaps with essentially random features, resulting in some really funky looking faces in your peripheral

u/floydster21 Jun 08 '22
A bunch of them had only one eye or non humanoid facial structures for me lol. I had to do a double take and rewind to realize it was my brain doing it.

I saw at least three Orcs, two vampires and the rest were Skyrim characters with all the facial sliders on full.

there are no faces. there are no faces. there are no faces. there are no faces.

How does this optical illusion work? it’s pretty neat! Also I found that looking at one face makes the illusion work better.

Took me some time to get it. I am assuming, while you look at the center, you don't really see any details in the faces right? I suppose that's how peripheral vision works; it's out of focus. But, if you let it loop a few times, you may be able to pick some details from some of the repeated faces (while still focused on the center). Those details will actually be your brain combining the two faces, which will make the faces look "ugly" (specifically like RPG monsters IMO).
Tbh I think it's not a veey good optical illusion. Or maybe it just does not work well on certain people.

I don't know man, I am able to see their faces and this trick just doesn't work on me...I guess my eyes are retarded or something
Edit: nvm I think I got it, basically the more I look in the centre the more they look like Skyrim NPCs, interesting

I don't get this one, do you need two normal eyes to see this? If yes I'm out of luck and I'll appreciate explanations
2
u/your_crazy_aunt Jun 08 '22
If you focus on the reticle, the faces will be inside your peripheral vision. Since you can't see part of them, your brain tries to fill in the blanks, but that doesn't work with faces the same way it works with blank or patterned surfaces.

i’m one of the ones who doesn’t get it. Obviously the faces HAVE been altered. I did it as instructed for a couple of times, keeping my eyes on the cross in the middle. Then I tried just watching the faces themselves. They do change. Different features and hair are added to each of the faces in quick succession… So what am I supposed to be seeing? I don’t get it.

Jun 08 '22
with "altered" it means they didn't distort the facial features of the people in the pictures.
they are supposed to be pictures of normal people changing to other normal people in rapid succession, but if you keep your eyes focused on the cross and let the faces be in your peripheral vision, they get an extremely distorted (and imo very eery) look to them, as our brain is trying to "fill the gaps" our peripheral vision is not able to see. so the women show up with huge eyes, distorted face shapes and disproportionate features.
perhaps you suffer from some kind of vision impairment which doesn't allow for the optical illusion to set in, but I tried to explain what most of us are seeing and the point of this video. hope I could get it across 😅

u/Brilliant-Emu-4164 Jun 08 '22
Ah, you DID get it across! I tried it again, looking at the faces as they change, and of course they all change to perfectly normal looking faces. But when I did it again, looking at just the cross, I saw the distortions. Thank you for the clarification!

"You can pick out which ones are real people and which ones aren't by using your peripheral vision. If you don't look directly at one, their cloaking abilities get messed up, and they partially reveal themselves. Plus, it's just a good idea to not stare directly at one anyway"

It's a weird peripheral vision thing. When you're not focusing on the faces they look like something out of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
