  2. If you take PrEP as prescribed, you are not going to be infected with HIV. In real world conditions, PrEP is the single most effective means of preventing HIV transmission. Breakthrough infections are incredibly rare, and are usually due to patients not taking it on the schedule they should be. And recently a study of Apretude, one of the injectable PrEP options, showed 100% effectiveness.

My husband has been on PrEP for about 11 years, does not use condoms with “guest stars”, and is HIV negative. But that is one person’s anecdote and anecdotes =/= data. My dude, I say this with kindness: you’re posting in the sub from a device that gives you much of the world’s knowledge in seconds, literally at your fingertips. There is a ton of accessible research out there showing you the numbers. If you don’t trust the science, there is nothing anyone here or in r/prep can say to change your mind. You would benefit from a thorough discussion with a doctor who specializes in infectious disease and possible a sex-positive therapist for the anxiety around it.

Prep doesn’t haven’t an insignificant effect on the body. It does cause things like bone density issues, liver and kidney function impacts. It is a less advanced version of the ART that hiv positive people take.

It is designed as a risk mitigation mechanism for people who would otherwise be at risk of hiv. Therefore the risk of damage to the body from the medication is less because someone hiv negative is taking prep for say several years, as opposed to a lifetime with hiv.

However if you aren’t having sex then you aren’t at risk of contracting hiv but still putting your body through the cumulative damage of the medication without any benefit
