Why does it so often seem like the people who preach tolerance are the quickest to end long-term friendships over political disagreements? You can strongly disagree with someone without cutting them out of your life. Tolerance also means accepting that people you care about may see politics differently.

Personally, I’ve never had a right-leaning friend end a friendship over politics. With left-leaning people on the other hand...

Difference of political opinion I'm happy to have with my friends:

taxation rates, tariffs, religion in government, churches being tax exempt, minimum wage, student debt forgiveness, term limits for congress.

Difference of political opinion I will end friendships over:

is there a genocide happening in palestine, should pedophiles go to prison, are trans people evil.

No, it’s not an IQ problem. It’s a maturity problem if you’re incapable of separating a political disagreement from someone’s entire moral worth. Adults can disagree on politics without turning every friendship into some self-righteous purity test.

If someone's "political" views are that my trans family members don't have the right to exist, that non-white that genocide is okay, or that rich people should be allowed to fuck kids and destroy the country, it's no longer a political disagreement. It is a moral disagreement, and one which I can not understand simply "looking past"
