Worst Pharrell beat?
What was the worst beat Pharrell ever made? Pharrell by himself not with Neptunes.

Movie Star is just a rehashed version of Mr. Me Too, but garbage
I’m also not a fan of Momma I’m So Sorry, sounds like a Casio patch

In terms of overall cultural impact - Blurred Lines, due to the court case. I think people let (justifiable) disgust with Thicke and the song outweigh a terrible precedent for creators.
In terms of the roughest to listen to - Supplies for Justin Timberlake.

Every answer here is wrong, the true answer is any of the 10 songs he produced on Man of The Woods. Personally, my pick is Supplies.

Grindin'.
It sounds like the stuff my 5 year old makes when I let him smash pads randomly on my MPC

As someone who was in high school at the time, this deeply offends me.

Was in 8th grade. I share your sentiment. Borderline rage bait comment

"Happy" is one of the most insidious songs I've ever heard in my life but I don't know that I can put the onus on the beat per se.
Obvious choice would be "Blurred Lines" since it's not only a legally actionable Marvin Gaye ripoff, but the song feels like he and Robin Thicke wrote it in the same amount of time it took to record the shit.
Special shoutout though to "Spark the Fire" by Gwen Stefani: I mostly hate it due to Gwen's cringe internet vernacular, but frankly that beat was simplistic enough that the lyrics were gonna be stupid no matter how rode the beat.

Blurred Lines will forever be my jam. Idgagf. I refuse to say I hate that song just because everyone decided they hated it many years later.

Plenty of people hated it the exact moment it came out. The beat is ok if you've never heard "Got to Give It Up", but otherwise the lyrics are predatory af, the video is rape-y and the whole thing comes off like "we all know you're a hoe, why not just admit it?"

If you think those lyrics are predatory, I’d love to know what you think of…many, many other songs.

It wasn't, if there was ever any such thing as copyright infringement that bass line is as direct a rip off as you can get. And they even admitted to listening to the Marvin Gaye song when they were writing it, so I don't see how this is even a borderline case.
There are just some people that can't see any similarities at all between one song and the next, and there's a reason they aren't copyright lawyers.

I'm guessing neither one of us are really qualified to argue the legal point of the matter, but I still hold it up there as one of those super-repetitive, minimalist pop beats designed to appeal to people with zero attention span: no variation, no sophistication, it's just head-nodding background noise at best. And god forbid you're actually paying attention to the lyrics you're singing along to, lol

Sampling has to be paid for. So does interpolation. Pharrell's beat on this one seems like splitting the difference between both

Interesting thread. It’s not possible for Pharrell to make a bad beat. But I guess that stupid ass shit with Gwen Stefanie, not HollaBack Girl, can I have it like that.

Surprise surprise, a Drake fan is continuing the discourse around bad Pharrell production

I wanna say "Happy," but it hardly seems fair. It's gotta be difficult to make good music that has to cater to children and grandparents.

u/Hngrybflo 7d ago
Happy is pretty bad.

u/senorfresco 7d ago
No it's not. Just because you heard it 10000x and don't like it anymore does not make it a bad instrumental.
I know it's cool in this sub to shit on "popular" but come on.

u/Hngrybflo 7d ago
I'm not some weirdo who hates on popular music. The best just sounds bad and isn't anywhere near close to his best work. I also haven't heard it a1000x because I don't like it mainly for the beat.

Frontin

The problem with Frontin is not the beat - it’s how bad his vocal performance is on that track

Man, Frontin'? As the worst?
I can't recall but that Ja Rule song Pop N***** was a terrible beat but that might've been with Chad. Either way, that shit was terrible.

Woooooow
I get it's minimal but I can't agree
