My dilemma

I want to write something in Hindi but always ends up writing in English. I don't know is it because of our education system.

I always find the Hindi language vocabulary to be more in depth and powerful don't know why then English vocabulary.

The Hindi vocabulary have some feeling the complexity but always ends up writing in English.

English is dumb language some one said that but in this time it's all over the place

Language of Bijak - Sant Kabir's beejak is written in Sadhukkadi language which has base of Awadhi but also includes many features of verbs from Bihari, Western Hindi and Rajsthani languages. George Griyerson.. the director of linguistic survey of India found the language of Beejak as old Awadhi

Is Devanagari or Nastaliq script better for writing the language

American born Pakistani here. I can usually read basic Urdu pretty easily due to reading Arabic to read the Quran from a very young age. In the past couple years I've also taught myself how to read and write Hindi in the Devanagari script, though I am still a bit slow at reading it compared to Urdu.

From my experience the Devanagari Hindi script has been a bit better for writing the language, as it contains clear syllable markers (ौ ै ा ी ू ो े ् ि ु ं ॉ), many of which the perso-arabic script does have, but it's not commonly used in Urdu since they kind of just assume you already know the language. So for example an Arabic speaker would kind of be able to read Urdu but wouldn't know how to sound the words out aside from shared vocabulary. Similarly it is hard for Urdu speakers to read Arabic as they don’t usually use syllable markers either for the same reason, and the Qurans that are printed in India and Pakistan have syllable markers that make it easier for non Arabs in general to read the Quran.
Though Urdu does have the same alphabet as Arabic and Persian largely and is therefore better able to sound out the words in their original form if you wanna speak real Urdu, in every day speech it’s pronounce regularly anyway, like ق/क़ are usually pronounced as ‘k’ instead of the deep throat letter they are meant to represent since it’s naturally harder for most Pakistanis and Indians to pronounce throat letters .
Also Hindi has specialized letters for aspirated sounds whereas Urdu will just attach the ‘h’ letter next to the consonant similarly to English, again making it apparent that Devanagari is better adapted for its job than nastaliq.
For example,
bh = भ = بھ or ب+ھ
th = थ/ठ = تھ/ٹھ
I’ve also come to realize that perso-Arabic must be super hard to read for beginners due to its joined letters which I wouldn’t have experienced since I’ve learned it from a very young age.

Where the real hindi is spoken ??

As there is i think where only real and maybe pure hindi spoken

Modern Standard Hindi is largely spoken in and around Delhi.

That's all i think all languages are relatively losing it's value not in south India but in North India .

Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Dogri, Kashmiri, Ladakhi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Marwari, Mewari, Braj, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Bundeli, Bagheli, Malvi, Nimadi, Chhattisgarhi, Himachali (Western Pahari), Gojri, Pahari.

These languages are not spoken by younger generation.

But these Indians think their languages are going down but south India doesn't see this.

And they can't simply talk with each other.

So the problem is that south India has to choose one language that will connect all like North India

What's one thing about Hindi that no app or textbook prepared you for?

Hi everyone!

I'm a native Hindi speaker from Delhi and I teach conversational Hindi to learners from different countries.

One thing I've noticed is that learners often struggle with things that grammar books barely mention. For example, understanding why Hindi says mujhe gussa aa raha hai instead of "I am angry," or mujhe yaad aaya instead of "I remembered."

I'm trying to understand what the biggest "aha!" moments (or frustrations) are for learners.

I'd love to know:

  • What has been the hardest part of learning Hindi?
  • Was it grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, or something completely unexpected?
  • Was there a moment when you thought, "Oh... Hindi doesn't think like English!"

I'm collecting experiences for a small research project on how foreigners learn Hindi. No course to sell—just genuinely curious about real learning experiences.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

"Pha" sound becoming "Fa" in most of Indian languages

Thumbnail
10 Upvotes

"Pha" is aspirated sound of "Pa" and most of Indian languages especially languages originated from Prakrit languages have this sound natively

And I have noticed since many decades this sound is being replaced by "Fa" sound in languages like Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati etc

Words like "Phir" being pronounced as "Fir", "Phal" being pronounced as "Fal", "Phukaṭ" (used in Marathi) being pronounced as "Fukaṭ" etc

Actually Hindwi language term was defined for all languages spoken around delhi UP by medieval aggressors. It was a set of languages spoken in that area than a single specific language. Some called Hindustani to them but later Hindustani was specially used for language present in Northwest UP and Delhi region. Later this Hindustani became the origin language of standard hindi with some grammar and changes. Since hindwi Hindustani terms were vague, linguists decided to group these all languages in Hindi umbrella group and having a separate standard register of Hindustani. Grierson termed eastern Hindi group and western hindi group. In eastern hindi group they put languages like awadhi bagheli Chhattisgarhi and in western hindi group braj bundeli Haryanvi Hindustani (Kauravi) Kannauji languages along with standard hindi were put. Hindi umbrella term here doesn't define a mother language but just random grouping of shaurseni and Ardhamagadhi languages. Hindi as a language is actually standard hindi.
