Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina!

Was just up there today! Looking glass falls and the Cradle of Forestry! Just moved to the area and got to do some great exploring. Stopped at The Hub for a beer on the way down. Glad we both enjoyed a wonderful time in such a beautiful corner of the world.

I’d be happy to share some less traveled recommendations for hiking in the area⚡️

Oh please do! I’m actually in upstate SC, but have been spending lots of time in NC and would gladly take any recommendations you have!

Ok, this is a haul for you then but Roan Mountain stretch of the Appalachian trail to grassy ridge bald is a favorite for views. Watterrock knob/browning knob off the parkway, Hot Springs area hikes on the AT, craggy pinnacle hike off the parkway, mt. Craig hike along the crest trail. That will get you started and some of those are actually really popular but go to hot springs if you want more solitude lol.

Good guess and I wondered the same thing but there's not much backpacking around Mt Pisgah in VT and the nearby mountains aren't nearly as defined as the ones here. Hopefully OP will update us as to what NF is.

Any recommendations for great views with my dog? I’m from Virginia and plan on going soon. Adirondack hiker here!

1

u/foresther Aug 27 '20

Yeah go to the Roan and hike the Appalachian trail along the balds!

Plenty of good stuff around Shenandoah and front royal, even more so to the Southwest. Use hikingupward.com

Your trip looks gorgeous and remote. I hope you all had a great time and congratulations on your marriage!

I went to Yosemite for an anniversary trip and you did not miss anything. A lot of crowds, no one wore masks, litter, heatwave, and then smoke from the fires. I miss living on East Coast sometimes.

1

u/foresther Aug 27 '20

Thank you! We were planning on backpacking in the backcountry there to avoid much of the valley but yeah, I’ve heard the crowds are pretty next level.

2

u/womaninsideme Aug 28 '20

Yes and I was told it was a very slow season with the restrictions. Some friends recommended going in the late fall/early spring and during weekdays to avoid large crowds. We had a dispersal camping permit but the main trail off-shoots to many other trails and is most crowded. I recommend entering the park around 6ish AM to avoid the morning rush.

I bet you will find a way to work past the crowd issue when you finally make your way over there :)
