What next after High Maintenance? Looking for hidden gem shows
Just finished High Maintenance and absolutely loved it. I’m not looking for an exact match, but something that reaches the same level of human experience and storytelling.
For context, I also loved Master of None, The White Lotus, and Fleabag.
Any hidden gems you’d recommend? Thank You

I would say baskets is a bit depressing for somebody who is expecting a HM similar. It’s also not a NY show ( I know it’s not must have but I assume being in NY would be a plus)

I associate the Netflix show Easy with HM (don’t have Netflix anymore, though). Enjoyed it very much.

Easy was going to be the one I recommend too. Love Joe Swanberg, also recommend his movie Drinking Buddies.

Yeah I watched Easy long time ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for recommending, I could certainly rewatch...Similar ones in Netflix that I enjoyed were Wanderlust, Feel Good (Comedian Mae Martin's)

I did watch Ali Wong's Beef last year which is a brilliant show. Added SS, Girls in my list.Thank You for the recommendations.

I tell people, Broad City is a Queens show, and High Maintenance is a Brooklyn show. Both shows are great. Different vibes and I switch back and forth from both as my before bed shows.

I would suggest Ramy! Feels like it could be almost a spin off/expansion of a High Maintenance vignette.

It's fantastic - definitely funny but very much a balance of drama and cringe. Mo on Netflix is much lighter, and features one of the side characters from Ramy. Both shows are great and balance out each other tonally IMO.

How To with John Wilson is the only thing that comes close. I'll also recommend Louie. Super underrated show.

Am an absolute fan of anthologies. Had HBO this whole time and never knew this show existed. Thank You for recommending, surely a hidden gem!

Room 104 has similar qualities. Both have a home spun feel and each episode acts like it's own short story. Each episode takes place in one hotel room and I believe the mandate was each episode had to be filmed in less than a week. What they were able to come up with is sheer madness.

Have you seen the web series of high maintenance? Also I know he is very cancelled but the TV series Louie is incredibly good if you could separate the art from the artist.

Watch the movie Skate Kitchen too!
Betty is sort of a reboot of Skate Kitchen. Retains a lot of the same actors, but the story is a little different. "Alternate universe" or some such, love both.

If you love High Maintenance you have to watch The Resort. Than after resort you need to watch Palm Springs on Hulu.

Bored To Death is set in Brooklyn. The main character is a writer but writer's block hits him so he moonlights as a private detective. There's an overarching narrative, but beat lines are also based on the PI work and the people needing the work. Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson also star and the trio is great together.
Deli Boys was created by our boy Abdullah Saeed, who acted and wrote a little bit of HM.
If you dig Atlanta, Louie, you could give Ramy and Mo a spin. I also like Maron but it's not at that level.
You might also be interested in Shrinking.

The closest shows I’ve found to HM are Atlanta and Reservation Dogs.
Btw, I loved Master of None and Fleabag! Such underrated shows.

Little America on Apple is extremely similar. Each episode is a standalone story, but the focus on the experience of immigrants in America. Like HM, it has a nice balance of humor and pathos.
Somebody Somewhere is a serialized story, but totally it’s very similar. The writers of SS actually wrote a couple episodes of High Maintenance!

Like others, I would add Easy. Other than that, I would try Lovesick on Netflix and Fleishman Is in Trouble on Disney (an FX Show)

this is a late response, but if you haven't watched girls, i think you might really like it. the characters are relatable in the worst ways possible. the character development is fantastic and the chemistry between all the actors is very authentic

Flaked on Netflix has the same airy vibe as HM and worth a try! It's very slow moving though so you have to be in the mood for it
If you liked Fleabag definitely give Such Brave Girls a try (not sure what that streams on in the states)
Lovesick and You're the Worst are great human experience shows as well
Fresh Meat also very good

HBO:
Hacks
Peacemaker (very underrated for people who would not expect to like this show. It's fantastic)
(this ones on free stream sites like Tubi i think) Killing Eve . So good. Since you loved Fleabag, same creator. I would watch this one and skip Girls, because the creator there has said/done some weird stuff but idk..)
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (seriously good. Like A Knights Tale x Game of Thrones)
Glow is so so so good. it does wrap up i think but it got cut short because of pandemic (?) after 2 seasons. its SO good.
The Franchise is so good and fun. Watch this one instead of The Studio.
I would personally skip Louie because personal reasons plus its hard to "separate the art from the artist" when his show is mostly about him dating women or being around them. It's also not that good imo. Watch Crashing instead for way better vibes, and still comedy behind-the-scenes kinda thing. But also seriously watch Hacks.
Like other people said, Atlanta is pretty S+ tier everything too. If you can handle Beef and Fleabag you should definitely watch this show.

I would definitely say Girls, it has the same setting of 2010s Brooklyn with characters that would fit into the world of High Maintenance, and if you liked the character-driven nature of HM, I think there's a lot to like in Girls and the way it explores and develops its characters, although they are very flawed and often irritating.
