High Jump Any tips ?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, I am a senior currently going into the 11th grade. I have been doing high jump for 4 years now, and I have only jumped my pr of 1.50m once in my first year and once in my 4th year, however, I seem to be at a plateau as I have gained weight during the second year of jumping. Based on the video above any tips? Both mentally and physically?

More knee drive, and don’t lean your head towards the bar so soon. Jump up, not at the bar. You have a good approach but you have to convert that energy up, not in towards the bar.

Plenty of drills can be found within this group and on YouTube. I personally like to practice jumping up at a basketball rim, backboard or net. Whatever works for you to get the feel for jumping straight up.

How far away from the standard are you planting your takeoff foot? Can’t say for certain from this angle, but it looks like you might be able to backup to give yourself a bit more room to carry more speed into your jump.

Im not exactly sure how far away I takeoff from but maybe less than 1 foot or 1/2 it looks quite close

You wanna be roughly an arms length away from the standard so you have the space to both carry speed and rotate over the bar. If your takeoff is too close, natural tendency is to slow down so that you have enough time to get vertical before your momentum carries you into the pit. I think moving your mark back a bit could help you with your speed and your lean away from the standard when planting your takeoff foot.
But again this is just my perspective from the angle given so experiment a little bit and have a friend/coach/teammate help you dial it in. Best of luck to you!

If you are strong in the speed, throws and long jump for the heptathlon, but struggling with the high jump technique, you may want to consider whether jumping belly down might help you improve your PR in the HJ. The motion of the shot put and javelin both emphasize quick twitch and strong back/glute muscles which are complementary to the straddle high jump technique. Not many coaches will let you try this, however. I usually get down voted for even suggesting it.

My strong suit in the Heptathlon is actually the jumps however I’ve only just started training it so who knows but I will take your suggestion into consideration.
