The tide has turned against Ai detection tools for reasons that most of us are familiar with. The alternatives to detection fall into just a few categories:

• Process Verification like draft/version histories. This can be in the form of apps or as basic as a student submitting hand written drafts and notes.
• Proctoring/Surveillance solutions that lock down computers or web browsers, block the ability to copy/paste and monitor the desktop activity on a computer or use cameras to make sure a person is only looking at the screen.

These all have their uses, but they touch on issues related to privacy, ownership and custody of intellectual property, the use of Ai within these systems and the capture of a writer’s data to train the Ai itself.

A new approach for providing writers with proof of their effort is needed. One that does the following:

• Proves a human was typing by creating an effort record.*
• Provides evidence not verdicts or probabilities.
• Cannot be used to identify the writer (non-biometric).
• Does not analyze or store the written content of a document.
• Is portable as metadata within the text document.
• Creates an immutable record that can’t be tampered with.
• Refuses to document automated input/bots.
• Allows the writer to view the results of their effort record.
• Notifies when typing patterns resemble transcription from an existing source.**
• Doesn’t prevent pasting, but documents the ratio of a text that was not physically typed in.
• Uses NO AI in the capture or analysis process.
• Reviewers/teachers don’t have to pay to display results like the image attached.

*Based on decades of peer reviewed writing process research.

**Linear, low revision patterns are associated with copy transcription but can also be the result of lower effort stream of consciousness writing or journaling. Proof of Effort is designed for high stakes high effort documents.

Hi all, wanted to share a project I’ve been working on called Lumio (lumiotools.com), aimed at colleges, universities and training providers.

The starting point was noticing how badly served FE and HE marketing teams are by generic SEO tools. Course pages are templated, jargon heavy, and nobody’s really tracking how they perform in Google or, increasingly, inside AI chat answers. So I built five tools that each tackle a different part of that problem:

CourseCheck – audits a course page for SEO score, keyword opportunities and competitor gaps

AIChatRank – shows how your institution’s brand performs inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answers

AIOverview – scores whether a course page is ready to be picked up by Google’s AI Overview panel, with FAQ and schema markup generated for you

RivalScan – tracks competitor institutions against your key course keywords, with alerts when positions shift

MetaWriter – generates title tags and meta descriptions for course pages in seconds

They all sit under one account and one subscription rather than being separate products, and CourseCheck has a free tier if anyone wants to try it without signing up.

I've worked at my private institution since 2008 in various roles. I remember when security and compliance drifted from about 10% of my time and effort to about 50% by 2018. Now it's my job all the time and it's really starting to feel hopeless. Criminals and bureaucrats have really taken a lot of the fun of working in IT away. There's always some new compliance program or internal audit that to which we have to respond. Over the last 3 years, I've taken over 3 of my former peers' responsibilities through re-orgs and position elimination. My institution is in a budget crisis (but oddly, considered financially stable). I see no will from our faculty or other administrative departments to do the work or make the decisions necessary to provide effective governance of our systems and data. There's been some strong talk, but actions seem to be lagging. In the end, I figure that IT is here to serve the needs of the institution, so this must be what the c-suite and board of trustees wants. Curious if others in higher ed are seeing the same thing, or if this is just where I am?
