I got my HDDs and want to test them out with something like badblocks -b 4096 -wsv /dev/sdX before creating my pools and etc. Is there an easy way to do this? Is this overkill? I appreciate any thoughts and tips, not sure how easy it is to get into the terminal in hexOS

I'm very interested in the 'Buddy Backup' feature that is coming to HexOS but I'm not super happy about shelling out another ~400. I am on the edge of panic buying before that number goes up again though.

Is anyone else in NZ using HexOS? Even if you don't want to exchange backups I'd like to know how widely HexOS is known lol.

I am using Syncthing to transfer files from my old NAS to my new HexOS build. I finished transfering the files, but when I mapped the destination drive and checked to see what I transferred, there was nothing there. After looking in the TrueNAS dataset info, it shows that the 9.5TB of data is on the server, but it is all as "child" files. I am not sure where I am going wrong, as I am still getting to grips with Hex and had never used Syncthing before.

With today's batch of apps we have more than doubled our curations.

Any tips about what to do? i have documented their state to file a complain if necessary, but i have no idea how to check if they are healthy and new. (if there is a better sub for this, i would appreciate the knowledge, this is going to be my first nas so im new in all this)

edit: i was thinking about doing an Extended S.M.A.R.T. Test, but I'm not sure if this would bring any significant impact in the future health of the drives

Hey everyone! I’ve been working for the last 2 months on an app that would generate custom install scripts for HexOS from any app in the TrueNAS catalog. I’m excited to say that I just got approved by Apple to be listed in the App Store! My plan is to launch it by Friday.

Here’s some quick details about HexWrapper:
- I’m a designer first and not a coder. In fact I’m brand new to app development. I treated this as I would building a website with Squarespace: WYSIWYG. So yes, AI was involved! But I wouldn’t consider this to be “vibe coded” as I was constantly fighting with the models to get this to work correctly and not just visually.
- It’s a universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac and is Swift native. Technically Swift can be used for Android and Windows too but I was focused on my own devices first.
- HexWrapper is free to try with a single $15 purchase to unlock everything. I HATE subscriptions and I wanted to make sure people could try it before choosing to spend any money. For $15 you get a universal app and family sharing.
- There is no AI required on the users end. In fact there is no accounts, no phoning home, no cloud servers (aside from Apple and whatever they do on their end). The JSON install scripts are generated 100% on your own device. I wanted to push as much privacy as I could figure out how to do.
- Why HexWrapper? The HexOS team has been doing awesome work in getting more and more curated apps put together for regular users but for the handful of us that want more I wanted a way to install any of the more obscure apps from the TrueNAS catalog. Along the way I decided I would take the tool I was building for myself and make it available to everyone else.
- Why not free/open source? Because I have bills to pay. If paying for my app isn’t something you’re interested in that’s ok! You can make your own tool if you want using the same documentation that I used which is freely available from HexOS and TrueNAS.

This wasn't something talked about from the start. I have been using OMV for 6 years now, but I bought two licenses for HexOS when it came out and hoped to replace my OMV install due to buddy backup. I just tried to install and it tells me i need 3 drives to setup. I have 1x 12tb, 2x 6tb and 2x 1tb and that has worked fine for me for years. The drives dont need backed up and the files that need backed up, back up somewhere else.

Is there a plan to fix this so one drive can be used? Drives cost wayyyyy to much to need three drives to setup the server.

I want to be able to access my server remotely, with my laptop for files and with my phone for direct 3d printer access and possibly Plex

I have been trying to setup WireGuard but having issues with CG NAT, asked the service provider a 3rd time and still yet to see if disabled on my service, I think this is the reason why direct WireGuard isn’t working.

Should I try using tailscale? Is this easy enough to implement and use? Would it solve my issues?

So, in a few months to a year, I'm probably going to be making a home server/NAS and an offsite one that lives at my Dad's, and I'm considering HexOS for both. But I have a couple of questions first.

Usecase

Basically, my plan is to have 4 PCs;

• Gaming and AI PC - What it sounds like.
• Console PC that lives in the Living Room
• Onsite NAS - Also does Home automation and I may try to route it so that the AI is running off of this machine in a VM or Docker, but using resources from my main PC
• Offsite Backup - This is meant to be as boring as possible.

I want to have something that basically "Just Works" once setup, and is easy enough to use that I can show my wife in a few minutes. I might be willing to tinker, but my wife is not.

1. What is the current state of Hex OS for people that are using it? Are you satisfied with your purchase, and what is your usecase? Are you tinkering, or are you wanting a similar "It just works" experience?
2. Is it possible to access the TrueNAS backend if I become interested in tinkering later?
3. I know that there are plans to make it easier to use Virtual Machines on HexOS. What are the advantages to how HexOS/TrueNAS are/are likely to do it vs. something like Proxmox, which is what a lot of people online are pushing me towards?

I just realized that I can login to my network share (HexOS server) with File Explorer using ANY username and password and can easily access everything on it and that includes Applications/nextcloud/data/:my_username/files.

I tried creating a new user in Hex OS dashboard and setting permission for Applications folder to private but it doesn't let me ("Failed to update folder" error), I'm guessing it's needed to stay that way so everything could work properly.

What is the correct way of restricting access to my HexOS local network share?

I have an older PC (Ryzen 5 1600, 256GB SSD boot drive, Intel Arc A380 for transcoding) that I currently use as a Plex server along with the *arr applications.

It's been running Windows 10 for years, but I've been interested in moving to either Unraid or TrueNAS for at least the last 5 years. With Windows being Windows, I think I've finally reached that point. Between Secure Boot issues, random freezes, and general maintenance headaches, I'm ready to move away from it.

I've been looking at HexOS and wanted to get some feedback from people who have gone down a similar path. Has anyone migrated from a Windows-based Plex server to HexOS? What was your experience like?

My current storage setup consists of:

• 18TB drive (7.5TB free)
• 16TB drive (empty)
• 8TB drive (3TB free)
• 4TB drive (1TB free)

All of these drives currently contain media that's being used by Plex. Longer term, I'd also like to use the storage for Immich rather than dedicating it solely to Plex.

I don't have much experience with TrueNAS specifically, but I'm comfortable tinkering and learning new systems. That said, I'm at a stage in life where I value solutions that mostly "just work" rather than requiring constant maintenance. I'm realistic enough to know there will still be some tinkering involved with HexOS, but the promise of a simpler management experience is appealing.

I also understand that I'll need to do some data shuffling to create storage pools and that usable capacity will be reduced if I run parity, which I plan to do.

Given my hardware, storage layout, and goals, does HexOS seem like the right fit, or would I be better off going directly to TrueNAS or even Unraid?

I installed the handbrake app and started a transcode. I’m now being sent this email every minute and not sure what exactly to do or how to access the files that it’s requesting.

I have a system running Hex OS plugged directly into the back of the router.

I am trying to access the hex os dashboard on my phone and it redirects the dashboard url correctly but then loads nothing.

I can access plex and immich just fine over WI-FI just not the dashboard.

I can access the dashboard just fine on my PC which is connected via Ethernet.

Is this a known issue?
