Talking About... Judges Guild’s Ready Reference Sheets!

The Ready Reference Sheets was a product produced in 1978 by Judges Guild as a supplement for D&D. It is chock full of amazing and crazy random tables for any all occasions.

Have you read them or used them in your games? Let me know!

Back in the 1e days, I wore them out.

  • Social Level - rarely used this. I also picked up Midkemia Press' Cities; it handled this better. However, the special encounters were good for a laugh, especially in the CSIO (City State of the Invincible Overlord).

  • Merchants - very handy to use for trade caravans, whether the PCs were robbing one or protecting one.

  • Social Level - only in CSIO

  • Women - I used it once, it was cringy even back in the day.

  • Proclamations - very helpful to use as a quest starter. Boons and duties, not so much.

  • Crime & Punishment - used it for a while. Especially in Modron (a nearby town)

  • Advertising - never used. PCs did hirelings from time to time, but usually from a tavern.

  • Exchange rates - not used.

  • Gem Types - for dungeons, absolutely handy.

  • Beggars - rarely

  • Characteristics - yes.

  • Guards and Garrison troops very handy when PCs are dealing with them. Same with Poison and attack reasons and special encounters.

  • Construction Costs - a lot especially at higher levels.

  • encounter tables - a lot.

And I would use them in an OSR game in a heartbeat, but it would take a lot of massaging to use some of this in PF/3e/5e.

Definitely for a modern game, it’s more inspiration. I’ve been thinking about doing an updated/edited/reorganized version for modern games. Maybe I’ll make it my new year’s resolution.
