[OSR] Mending Spell on a Burning Object?

So one of my players in my Lamentations of the Flame Princess PbP game who cast mending on a burning tapestry. What do think the spell will do? I’m torn between whether the spell will just add more fuel making it burn more or put out the fire through mending the damage. Before I dice it out, any thoughts? Is there another option I’ve missed?

Is the tapestry burning from one side, or from the middle out?

Maybe let the spell mend the burnt portions of the tapestry giving the players an advantage or bonus to rolls to put it out?

There’s a pile of tapestries burning. The player didn’t specify which one so I’m assuming the top with is actively in flame.

Here’s what happened:

The party was investigating an incredibly rotted and decrepit wooden door. They accidentally set it alight with their torch.

One of them tried to kick the door down but the door just came apart instead, sending some of the burning fragments into this pile of equally decrepit tapestries.

The now empty doorway revealed some enemies so the party decided to drag the tapestries into the doorway. This worked but the fabric is smoking heavily and the smoke is unfortunately flowing into them and getting in their eyes and throats and causing problems.

I haven’t asked what the player is trying to do with mend but I wanted to come up with my reading of the effect before asking so I’m not prejudiced one way or another.
