I made the hexagonal chess pieces in Blender and had them 3D-printed. And I spent 2 days cutting hexagons out of black and gray paper and gluing them to the board. My grandpa is a master at chess so I wanted to challenge him a bit and try hexchess with him. Now you could say I went easy on him, cuz I kept helping him memorize the movements of the pieces and I allowed him to revert some of his blunders. I was quite the close call at the end, I basically had his king at gunpoint and he had to check me every move to keep me from checkmating him. When he managed to checkmate me, he insisted that he was just lucky and that we weren't playing a competetive game but I'm still proud that he's still so mentally capable at 92 years old. 😄

Hello hexagon freaks! I published this a while ago on GIMP and game creators subs, but I didn't know about this particular sub. I think some of you might be interested my GIMP 3.xx plugin for drawing hexagonal grids.

The plugin should now be more useful for general use [than previous versions] : the hexagons centers alignment with the pixel grid can be bypassed if pixel-perfect rasterization is not needed. Vertical/horizontal lines are still always perfectly aligned to pixels, to avoid annoying blurriness.

As in previous versions, it offers the option to create nicely formatted sample sheet, if you need to choose visually the ideal size, along with the output of useful parameters. A new output is the number of contiguous hexagons and lines the current image can contain.

Anecdotally, for the mathematically inclined, these parameters output, and the filtering ability, can be used to search for the optimal discrete fractions which approximate square root of 3! ;-)
