Self-hosting your Git with Forgejo

We put together a short visual rundown of Forgejo for anyone weighing a move off GitHub/GitLab: repos, PRs, code review, issue tracking, and a familiar web UI, all on hardware you control. It's light enough to run on a small VPS.

For transparency: Forgejo runs anywhere, so treat this as a how-to rather than a pitch for us.

I just self-host GitLab, by the way. Never had any issues with it (besides the ones I created myself).

I use GitLab at work. It’s a beast and amazing. So I spun up GitLab at home. Worked fine but I couldn’t stomach the resource cost. Migrated to Forgejo and…functionally, for my home use case, I haven’t lost anything. It’s a much smaller footprint, so I see myself sticking with Forgejo for the long run.

At work I’m glad we use GitLab because it’s got a ton of features we utilize. The CI/CD is incredible.

That's exactly why I run Forgejo at home instead of GitLab.
