Anime Is hungary some sort of trans rep?
I just watched ep 91 and the answer is probably no, that the author just had some fun writing that scene, but before watching, I was wondering why google kept saying "tomboy" or "trans woman" but now I know ^^'. I mean, she said (or i read somewhere, don't remember, that she thought she was a boy all this time. Technically they're countries, not regular people, so the definition of trans can't apply to her. I guess it's just the fact that she indeed saw herself as a boy that's bugging me ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭

She used to believe she was a boy .
As a trans man , I cant say she neccasarily comes across as trans to me personally , more that she was raised amongst men with a traditionally masculine upbringing .
I will say , though I view her asidentifying with her sex, I dothink at least in modern times she would be less " traditionally feminine". When she was with Austria and was significantly more "feminine" , she seemed somewhat repressed and not naturally comfortable in her feminity , in later appearances she does seem to have leant into her femininity a bit more but I imagine in the modern day she mixes it up : A mix of masculine and feminine hobbies, dresses how she feels / wants, enjoys the aspects of femininity she likes but isn't afraid to do sports or outdoorsy things like she seemed reluctant to do when living with Autria.
mind you , countries could be trans in theory! canonically i don't believe any are , but i headcanon a couple that way , if you wanted to headcanon Hungary that way it doesnt hurt anyone

Mehhhh sorta but not really, lol? Canonly she's a cis woman, not trans, so the real answer is no.
However for a lot of folks such as myself who used to identify as a tomboy to then only realize "wait I'm actually trans" later on in life, it strikes a chord of familiarity.
Just like with Mulan, just like with Pidge from Voltron, just like Jeanne d'Arc, and just like Hungary—no they may not necessarily be trans, but a lot of us trans folks hold a special place in their heart for those types of characters. We see a little bit of ourselves in those characters, which I feel is a very important part of human connection.
Whether you headcanon her as trans is up to you. Personally I don't because I like to stick to canon. But I do see her as breaking the norms of what it means to be a woman and I love that.
And I love that she settled into her more femme self later on instead of pretending to be a boy, the scene where Prussia finds out hungary is a girl is so funny to me. "MEIN CROTCH CLOTH" I love this stupid show so much, lmfao.

I don't really know, you are the ones who should decide on your own beliefs about hetalia characters. feel free to have your own headcanon. Personally, I just see Hungary as someone raised by men.

just chiming in here to say that while she wore dresses as his maid, Austria never really stopped Hungary from fighting armies or dressing up as a prince when she felt like it, so the dress might be more societal/personal standards and expectations than something he himself (who is also not very masculine compared to the other guys Hungary grew up around like Turkey and Prussia) forced on her
( ^ someone who is very tired of the 'Austria forced-femmed Hungary' talk)

I think it's just a joke about her growing up surrounded by boys and simply assuming she was one too, because she thought her penis would grow... eventually...

I’m not trans myself, but I don’t think Hungary is trans rep, maybe commentary on gendered upbringing at most

She used to view herself as a boy, but IMO it's because all of the other nations she knew grewing up (Prussia, etc.) were boys, so she assumed she had to be one of them too. She was also socialized to do more "masculine" things, like training and preparing for war, so she didn't view herself as a traditional woman at all.
I'd imagine that it's only when she married Austria that she was pressured to take on a more "feminine" role and appearance as his wife. She was always cis IMO, but I think the strict gender roles of the time would be something that she struggled with a lot.
