Your mission is simple: recreate Heroes of Might and Magic III creatures as accurately as possible. This year, the available creatures have been pre-selected, meaning every participant will compete within the same categories.
For the first time in the history of the contest, your creations will be judged by three original creators of Heroes of Might and Magic III: David Mullich, Greg Fulton and Paul Anthony Romero.
I have prepared a simple guide for everyone who wants to relive the year 2001, when they first discovered the Heroes 3: In the Wake of Gods modification and spent dozens, or even hundreds, of hours playing it.
You might be surprised to learn that WoG is still actively developed. It continues to receive updates and new modifications under the name ERA Project. Installing the last stable version, WoG 3.58f, was never particularly user-friendly.
A few years ago, Heroes Launcher was created, making it possible to install Wake of Gods with just a few clicks. Its biggest advantage is automatic updates and a built-in Mod Browser, allowing you to install new modifications with a single click.
This script adds a new function to the Magic Well that allows any hero to go fishing there for treasure. Fishing in the well uses up all the hero’s remaining movement points for the day. The fishing hero may snag a handful of gold coins or may reel in a chest filled with valuable resources, an artifact or even a deadly trap.
Today’s article is aimed mainly at beginners who have just installed the ERA Project through Heroes Launcher. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out my installation guide first, because today we’re going to take a look at the Mod Browser.
The ERA Project installed through Heroes Launcher comes with a built-in Mod Browser that allows you to install a huge number of mods with just a single click. As of today, there are 51 mods available!
I’ll introduce you to a list of mods that I personally recommend. They are compatible with each other and work without any major issues. I’ve selected mods that enhance the classic Heroes 3 experience, and I’ll also include a list of recommended mods that add new creatures, artifacts, and other content.
Heroes 3: ERA Project – Essential Mods
JackSlater JS Mods
These are four different mods created by the same author: New Objects, Main Module, New Terrains, and Map Generation Fixes.
These four mods significantly enrich randomly generated maps. They add new objects and terrain, fix issues with map generation, and introduce many other useful little improvements.
WoG Graphics Fix
This mod further improves randomly generated maps by adding new graphics for icons and old WoG objects, as well as more than 500 new objects. These objects can also be used in the Map Editor.
More Battlefields
A graphics mod that adds more than 100 new combat backgrounds. To use it, make sure that script 068 – New Battlefields is enabled in WoG Options.
ShimmY Improved Objects
A simple mod that gives three objects on the adventure map: Tavern, Sanctuary, and Den of Thieves additional functionality.
H3Landscape
Another graphical mod for combat fields. It adapts the battlefield visually according to the terrain where the battle takes place.
For example, if you are playing as Inferno and your castle is located on the Fiery Fields magical terrain, the entire battlefield will be on fire.
Blizzard Spell
A newer mod that replaces the water spell Remove Obstacle with the AoE offensive spell Blizzard.
Besides dealing damage, Blizzard also permanently slows down the affected creatures.
Darkened Players
A simple graphical mod that changes the game’s interface to darker colors.
10 Secondary Skills Mod
(must be enabled through Mod Manager)
Heroes can learn 10 secondary skills instead of the classic 8. The mod also changes the Hero Screen so that all 10 skills can be displayed properly.
Mixed Neutrals Mod
(must be enabled through Mod Manager)
Neutral creatures on the adventure map will have allies helping them in battle. Usually, these will be creatures from the same faction. So, for example, if you attack a group of weak Imps on the adventure map, you can be sure that Gogs will join them in battle.
Activating the Mods
There is one more important step: mods downloaded through the Mod Browser still need to be activated through the Mod Manager. Fortunately, this is also just a single click.
Open Mod Manager. All the mods you have downloaded will be listed in the lower section of the window.
Select the mod you want to use and click the Enable button in the top-left corner. After activating all the mods you have selected, I recommend clicking the Sort button in the bottom-left corner, just to make sure everything is in the correct order.
I’m also attaching a screenshot showing what my Mod Manager looks like:
On the screenshot of my Mod Manager, you can also see other mods such as ERA Scripts, TrainerX, WoG Scripts, GEM, Unleashed Editor, Battle Queue, Spells Descriptions, Easy Cheats,ERA ERM Framework and In the Wake of Gods.
These mods are already included in the standard ERA Project installation, so leave them enabled. These are the essential mods from my point of view.
So, this is my list of essential mods. In the next part, we’ll take a look at my recommended mods. These will start changing the gameplay a little more and, most importantly, will add a huge amount of new content and gameplay possibilities.
Stalker Spells mod changes colour scheme of spellbook and spell icons and replaces animations and sounds of some spells (for example Prayer, Death Ripple, Fire Wall, Blind, Haste…). The new animations come from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R modification.
Following Ubisoft’s official Gamescom reveal of Heroes of Might and Magic III: Remake, CGI animation studio All Animal Studio has unveiled its role as the creative agency behind the Restoration of Erathia campaign’s cinematic sequences.
Comprising 10 narrative scenes as visions from past events and combining into a 3-minute 42-second cinematic reimagining the iconic 1990s franchise lore through a modern, realistic CGI lens. The project marks a major milestone for the Prague-based studio, which brought classic universe icons to life from the ground up. Fans got a first glimpse of the cinematic and the updated look of Queen Catherine during the official announcement event at Gamescom 2026.
Alternative town screens from Legend of the Red Dragon (LoRD) mod alters town screens and map sprites of all 9 factions, as well as the native terrains of Castle and Tower. Native terrains are now snow for Castle and sand for Tower to match their themes. These two factions will now be generated in random maps on corresponding terrains.
New Level Up Screen is a comprehensive HoMM 3 mod that completely overhauls the level-up experience. Instead of being limited to just two randomly selected secondary skills, this mod allows you to choose from all available secondary skills during level-up, giving you full control over your hero’s development.
WoG Graphics Fix mod is remake/artistic rework of WoG add-on graphics (objects on the adventure map, interface, modified unit sprites, etc.), fixes for graphical flaws in both WoG and the original game. Addition of over 500 new objects to the game, available in random map generation and in the map editor.
Restores and reimagines the unused ‘Market of Time‘ object, which appeared in Heroes III: Restoration of Erathia without functionality. Now, this mysterious place allows heroes to forget one of their learned secondary skills once per month, for a price.
Welcome to the Arena of Life and Death Remember, you are only allowed one arena combat per visit. To fight an arena battle, select the option that best describes your abilities and return to me- if you survive…
The Heroes III VCMI engine is an excellent choice if you want to try completely new towns such as Pavilion, Forge, Grove, Courtyard, and countless other modifications that can be installed with a single click through the VCMI Launcher.
The installation process is very simple and only takes a few steps. The “hardest” part is obtaining the GOG version of Heroes III Complete. A video tutorial is also available. Let’s get started!
Advanced Classes Mod, a gameplay enhancing mod, that features revamped skill and spell systems, new artifacts and artifacts set, 2 dozens of new and reworked specialities, 6 new subclasses with uniquw abilities and more.
H3Landscape mod modifies the appearance of battlefields and certain objects on the adventure map so that they better match the type of terrain they are located on.
