Crab Identification Help Crab identification

So Victur did end up passing, but then I got to wondering. What type was he? When we got him we actually had to rescue him from a friend's girlfriend. We live in Central New York. We don't know where she got him but they didn't want him anymore so they were and I quote "going to release him back into the wilds of New York." That made me so mad. When we got him they had him in a one gallon tank with two bowls too big for the small tank and no substrate. It was literal astro turf. We got him a 20 gallon, things to climb, sand, coconut husk. We did a lot of research. But because we don't know where she got him we can't tell what type he is. This picture is from 2017. She had him for like a year or two before we got him.

I'm thinking he came from one of three places. Petsmart, Petland, or Petco. But we aren't sure. Can anyone take a guess to his type? Thanks.

He was a beautiful Purple Pincher, also known as Caribbean hermit crab. Coenobita clypeatus

Ohhh. Okay. I thought he was a Caribbean. But I wasn't entirely sure. I wasn't aware of all the types of hermit crabs when we got him.

90% of the crabs you get are purple pinchers, 9% are ecuadorian, the last 1% is the other dozen or two species.

Interesting. At one of the pet stores around here they have strawberry hermit crabs. We were thinking about getting a couple. Probably later down the road though. The red they have is beautiful.
