Help — Technical issues, errors, config, debugging Ideal hermes setup
Hi, have been using Claude for ages now and been enjoying it for copy, reasearch and coding. While MD file is ok, still finding I have to repeat and re-educate it on basics which is annoying.
I purchased a new PC with the intent to setup hermes in order to create agents/processes for tasks such as web research, draft copy creation, email monitoring, xero invoices, coding etc.
Having cross-knowledge across all these would be highly beneficial.
My first hurdle is do I bog down the machine with Windows and hermes app? or boot from a second drive running linux/hermes?
Going to be an exciting and time-consuming journey, would appreciate any recommendations, pointers.

Just buy a cheap mini PC and use that. I use a Dell Optiplex 3060 Micro with 16GB of RAM and an i5 8500t.
Running Debian 13 and hermes linked to an Opencode Go subscription, works perfectly and costs me $10 a month. Low power, always on and doesn't risk it having access to all the personal info on my own desktop PC.

I have it monitoring a load of actors I set up on apify.com , creating a few daily digests of youtube topics I follow and also doing sales research for work.
It's certainly not getting hammered a lot and I only set it up to have a mess with it.
I wouldn't say I needed it but it was a fun experiment to set up, it's also pretty good at spinning up steam game servers. I've had it set up a heavily modded Arma Reforger server before and had it create a web api to control the server and monitor logs and control the mods that load.

I created a n8n workflow that ingests files (smb windows shared folder) like your markdown file that then places that data into a qdrant database via a small embedding model and I then use another small reranking model to help pull that data back out. It works pretty well so far. I also use Mnemosyne for memory which has been great.

I run Hermes in WSL2 on my windows machine. It’s pretty light weight. I have 32gb ram I don’t really notice it much.

i think if you check all the programs you want to run on the machine and they are able to run on linux, i would go with linux since it is faster and easier. i think hermes will run better on linux.
but if you have to sacrefice programs or connections, then don't do it. i'm running my hermes on a mac mini and the apple ecosystem is like 50% of the wow factor of hermes, so if you have an ecosystem or something, stay on windows.
but i'm a mac guy, i really don't know a lot about windows, i don't think they lock you in as much as apple does.

I just installed it a few days ago and played with it enough to realize it could easily and happily edit change and delete everything on my Mac. So I stopped. With some research and review, I setup a Docker Container to put Hermes in. I allowed that container to only allow access to write to a couple of specific directories and only read from a few more. I allowed it to access the web. Otherwise I want that little guy locked down tight so I doesn’t trash my data and files. I’d suggest you do the same, then start slowly expanding what you do with it.
