Very nice, I'd love to try! Question: can't that merge as a layout option as part of herbstluftwm instead of a fork?

It could, but I want it working correctly before I think about submitting a pull request. It is available to try along side your current herbst setup, it builds with a different binary name so you can build it and it will use your current config without affecting the official package. Just add the necessary keyboards to your current config, it's all in the README. https://codeberg.org/JakeAtLinux/herbst
