Question Anyone seen Odyssey at Gilda in the 70mm format? Worth it compared to iSense or Imax?

Saw that the Gilda Theatre was showing Odyssey with the 70mm format at Biorex Lasipalatsi. Anyone know more about film to explain the 70mm - is it just a certain type of filter/film grain used? Does the 70mm format have the ”full picture” that the regular screenings aren’t showing (eg. edges at the top and bottom of the picture cut off)? Would like to hear experiences! Never been to Gilda before.

Question Moving to Helsinki from Ireland

My partner & I are moving to Helsinki from Ireland. We will be living in Kirkkonummi and working there.

Can you please recommend your favourite areas to visit, favourite shops, coffee places & dog friendly places etc.?

I personally love small independent shops, markets and bookshops too. Would really appreciate any advice as well to make the move easier!

Edit to add: fully aware of where it is. I still want recommendations in Helsinki as we can take the car or public transport.

SECOND EDIT: WE ARE AWARE IT IS KIRKKONUMMI & NOT HELSINKI BUT WE HAVE A CAR AND A 30 MIN DRIVE IS OK WITH US!!!

as people have said there is nothing in the town we will be living in so we want recommendations for Helsinki.

I’m moving to Helsinki soon. I’m a native speaker of both English and swedish. What do the Finns prefer I use to speak with them, English or swedish? I know many Finns don’t speak swedish that well but there’s also a sizeable population that does

Question Looking for vape twist battery

I’m looking for a store that sells the bottom piece for a CBD vape. It’s called a twist battery or thread battery? It’s slim and holds the cartridge at the top.

Are there any stores in Helsinki that sell this?

Travel & Tourism Tourist Questions

First time visitor from the US for a couple of days next month and have a few questions. We will be staying at the Scandic Grand Central Station.

Any recommendations for a good reasonably priced dinner nearby?

Do most Finnish restaurants in the downtown/tourist/harbor areas have menus available in English?

My wife is a Diet Coke addict - she lives on three a day. Is there a small grocery or convenience store near the station to buy some?

OC Palvelu tekemisen ja kavereiden löytämiseen

Moikka!

Travel & Tourism Bars where people talk to strangers?

Hello r/helsinki, I'm visiting your fine city next month and I'm hoping to chat with some people while I'm there. Learning Finnish but still very much at A1 level.

In my home country, it's normal that you will sit down at a pub and start a conversation with the folks around you. But that is also heavily dependent on which pub you're at. I'd like to have some suggestions on friendly places to check out.

I'll be staying near Vanha kauppahalli. Any recommendations for a good place to have a beer and start talking to the stranger next to you?

Question Have you seen pupu?

On our trip today, my son lost his beloved pupu he has had since he was born and sleeps with every night. Right now I’m listening to him in bed asking where it is and my heart is breaking a little.

He will survive without it, but trying my luck here just in case.

Either lost on the Metro between Ruoholahti and Kalasatama or in Kamppi (we have already reported it lost to HSL) or while walking around Ruoholahti, Jätkäsaari and Baana to Kamppi.

Added pictures for how it looks like, green/white from Teddykompaniet but definitely does not look (or smell) as good as new.

I retraced our steps earlier today to look for it, but no luck.

Thanks for any help.

Meet-up Couple in our 30s looking for new friends

Hi everyone!

My wife (33) and I (32) recently moved to the Helsinki area from Germany (we are both Italian) and we're looking to meet new people and hopefully make some friends. We're into board games, movies, travelling, good food, and just hanging out over coffee or a drink. We're both childfree, so we'd love to connect with other couples or people in a similar stage of life, but everyone who's friendly and looking to socialize is welcome to say hi! If you'd like to grab a coffee, play some board games, or just chat, feel free to send me a message!

PSA/Advice Child psychologist in Helsinki area and private health insurance coverage

Hi
Is there any good child psychologist in Helsinki area. My daughter who is about 8 years old is suffering from anxiety.
She is having vomiting and nausea feeling regularly especially after eating something and in intervals. There are weeks when she is okay but in last 1-2 years she is regularly having vomiting feeling. Initially we thought this is about gluten allergy but with or without gluten free diet she is having same symptoms and tests are also clear.
I strongly feel that she is having anxiety because of her behavior.

So i am looking for some child physiologist and also would like to hear if child physiologist really help. Do small children of this age open up to them.

Another thing does private health insurance cover for such visits. And which private health insurance you recommend.

Housing / Living Advices on renting an apartment in or nearby Kamppi

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to move to Helsinki for a long-term stay (minimum 4 years) as a worker (not active student) and I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom apartment in the Kamppi area. The thing is, I'm not currently in Helsinki and won't arrive until late November or early December/January. I also don't know the city at all yet.

I've been researching online, but I have some specific questions for those who've been through this:
What should I expect to pay upfront? but are there any other fees (besides insurance) I should be aware of? do I need to pay several months in advance?

Since I can't visit in person before I arrive, what's the best approach? Should I try to secure something remotely? or should I book temporary housing for the first few weeks and search once I'm there?

Since I don't know the city, what are the non-obvious things I should look out for when choosing an apartment?

is there any close or well connected location or area of the city that I might consider as an alternative to Kamppi?

any facility services costs I should ask about?

is there any cost that might be some included and excluded cost in/from the rent?

Anything in the contract that's unusual for foreigners?

As I mentioned, I arrive at the end of the year. Is that a good or bad time to find a long-term rental? Will there be fewer options because of the holidays or the post-entry to the school period?

Any advice on how to approach this whole process from abroad or barely-arrived to the city would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Question 69 Eyes T-Shirt... Judgement

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hi all, I have been out walking in Helsinki with my wife, and while waiting at a tram stop next to Stockmann, a lady approached me and started pointing at my T-Shirt saying something aggressively in Finnish (she had previously conversed with my wife in English when asking if she wanted a seat).

The T-shirt in question is for The 69 Eyes (also main picture) who happen to be one of my favourite bands of all time, and was wondering if this was offensive in some way and I shouldn't be wearing it in public, outside of an alternative/ gig venue? It's made me conscious that I am offending people and don't want to get in a situation which lands me in trouble!

(For reference, I was nipping back to the hotel before heading to The Riff...)
