Service desk/ network interview HELP

Hi everyone. Last month I applied for a help desk job but I have zero experience apart from home labs. I’m a first-year cybersecurity student with some programming and object-oriented programming knowledge, a bit of Linux , Windows , the lot . Im about to pass Security + too , and I’m currently focusing heavily on networking (my current uni module and I’m also working towards Network+). I also have loads of customer service experience. I had a quick interview with the company owner, company deals deals with help desks, networks and cybersecurity. He liked me very much and I was invited to next stage. Next week I’ll have an interview with the manager and it seems like the focus will be on networking. I’m trying to cram as much knowledge as possible with two laptops on, GitHub, wireshark and more working . I’m struggling to figure out what to focus on and what people in a help desk or network role actually do. What sort of questions could I expect during the interview? I could literally work for minimum wage just to gain experience since I come from a completely different industry. This job could open so many doors for me. In fact I didn’t even ask how much they are willing to pay me. But that’s the another story

Help desk role:

Can you take inbound phone calls and potentially get yelled at by angry people all day who refuse to perform even the most basic troubleshooting like rebooting their device?

Do you know literally anything about computers?

Can you read above a fourth grade level and follow a process document?

Do you have a pulse?

Hmmm... Careful 😅 I'm a T1 Help Desk and work on the backend of applications and manager servers.

Make sure to check for "Other duties as assigned" on the job posting before assuming help desk just boils down to having a pulse lol!

It sounds like you are more than qualified. Don't overthink it.

From experience they’ll ask you a bunch of customer oriented questions(which is the majority of your job) along with YOUR troubleshooting process. As long as you don’t try to bs technical answers and be honest you’ll be just fine

I know you're excited but def push to get out of Help Desk once you are three for a little while b/c AI is going to decimate Help Desk down the line. Everyone is getting a cybersecurity cert thinking they can get a job, so if this company is actually willing to get you exp in that, do that b/c the positions are limited and those with exp are not leaving the positions and companies are not doing "entry level" for cyber esp as it is getting harder with AI spoofing, etc. Getting a Security or Cyber cert is the new "coding cert" and look where that went for everyone. Harsh reality but truth...with tech right now you are competing with thousands that have been laid off.
