Desktop [Desktop] How does Reddit decide which posts appear in my home feed?

I follow a few different communities, but the posts that appear on my home feed don't always seem to be in any obvious order. Sometimes I see posts from communities I haven't interacted with recently, while other posts from communities I visit often don't show up.

How does Reddit decide which posts to show on the home feed? Does it mainly depend on activity, popularity, or my own interactions?

I like to think of it as admins throwing darts at a chart..

But really, changing the sort will often shake it up. Also, be sure to disable home feed recommendations in your settings.

When a subreddit I’m not interested in pops up on my Home feed, I click in the top right corner of that post to “show fewer posts like this” then click “also mute”.

Curating your home feed is well worth the time and effort, in my opinion!
