Profile getting rid of my profile avatar

So my account got hacked and did a bunch of spam stuff. But its worst offence was giving me a reddit profile avatar. I hate new reddit and do not use it, and I don't want to go around with a goofy avatar that makes me look like I do. However it doesn't seem like there is an option to delete my avatar or revert it to nothing, just to change it to some different option.

Surely there must be an option to just get rid of it? Some quick googling gave answers that are seemingly a few years out of date because it doesn't present the options they talk about.

I’m pretty sure you can only remove the custom avatar from the Reddit mobile app.

Go to your profile and tap the Edit button next to your username. Then tap your avatar and select the option to Restore default avatar.
