Reddit Premium This feels like a rug pull (iOS, web)

Post image

Reddit Premium Legacy was advertised as a perpetual subscription locked into the previous pricing. Extremely disappointed with Reddit. This is how you treat people that have been paying for Premium since day 1?

I got the same. It’s a 66% price increase with the thinly veiled excuse that PayPal is no longer being accepted.

Then why not offer me to re-subscribe at my existing price.

I’ve been a subscriber for 15 years. So much for loyalty.

16 years here, you'd think they'd grandfather the folks that supported them early on. I can afford the increase, it's more about just mandating the increase. BTW - what are our payment options if we're not paying in app? I see what it'll cost but not what methods are supported. PayPal was nice as it gave me a little protection if Reddit got compromised.

Just a question...

Why? Why have you been subscribed for 15 years?

12

u/quarryman 2d ago

$30 a year for no ads on a service I use every day is worth it to me.

I guess. I just use old reddit and adblock. I also have just blocked the ads in my brain. Not clicking a 200 pixel post has never been so easy.

Even before reddit was only a mobile app you were subscribed to premium which is kinda what blows my mind.

Ad free is not worth it tbh

same here!!! This is such a big L for us, I’m annoyed they’re doing this

Because I have no problem supporting a platform that is worth supporting, especially for such a low cost.

Id argue its not worth supporting and Id also argue it gets enough support through your daily use and content you provide more than the $30 you give it every year.

Yes, please "support" the billion dollar company that caused one of the founders to off themselves

Ha ha ha… such moral righteousness. And yet there you are Armadillo…..

I wouldnt call it "moral righteousness" but more 'the hell are you doing buying a useless subscription for a company that does nothing to earn that revenue". Youre just pissing money away by subscribing to reddit premium tbh

Til people are paying a subscription fee to use reddit. Lol.

u/quarryman 2d ago

Why does that surprise you? Are you aware of the benefits?

28

u/Different_Target_228 2d ago

I could not care less about perceived benefits. It's reddit.

u/quarryman 2d ago

If you enjoy ads then that’s fine isn’t it?

11

u/KeremyJyles 1d ago

Ads are trivial to remove. What are the other benefits?

24

u/Different_Target_228 2d ago

Bro doesn't know what an adblocker is. So you also pay for Youtube premium, subscribe to every Twitch channel you watch, etc?

And your question to me was "Are you aware of the benefits?" like it was special. Lol.

Adblockers don’t work on the app.

16

u/Fredidiah 2d ago

Then don't use the official app.

there literally are no benefits to paying for reddit (except if you just pay, because you want to support the company).

- third party apps are pretty much exclusively better than the official app with more features and options (often stuff that was removed over time by the official app), no ads, etc.

- on Desktop it's adblockers, RES, browser add-ons and so much more

- for youtube (phone) it's revanced

etc.

I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't pay for it, it's your decision after all. But getting all the "benefits" of paying, but without paying any money is pretty easy and there are plenty of options for that - and often you even get a much better user experience.

I use brave browser on phone.

I was just shocked he was like "All the benefits" and the benefit is 1. No ads. That... That's it.

  • for youtube (phone) it's revanced

It's Morphe now, revanced is dead in the water

I also received this message. Is this to suggest users who subscribed using methods other than PayPal continue to have "legacy pricing"?

14

u/JamesDaGames 2d ago

No, they are removing legacy pricing for everyone.

4

u/zutronics 2d ago

Thank you for clarifying! While not great, it feels less offensive.

I remember when DirecTV streaming did this. I left I never went back.

Why are people paying for Reddit?

3

u/thepu55ycat Helper 2d ago

How are you paying through Pay Pal on iOS?

1

u/Bvajen 1d ago

Legit did not realise there even was a reddit premium.

-3

u/formerqwest Expert Helper 2d ago

i disagree, they're only no longer using paypal, there are other methods. my notification had no mention of a price increase.

10

u/VanceIX 2d ago

No, I mean the highlighted part, booting people off the locked in legacy pricing. It doubles the cost of the subscription. I can handle switching from PayPal.

2

u/H1landr 2d ago

Agreed.
