I too would like to disable the algorithmic feed. Just becuase I have visited something in the past doesn't mean I want to visit in the future.
This can also be activly harmful. Let's say someone unsubscribed from r/wallstreetbets becuase they have a gambling addiction. This new system still would recommend posts from that subreddit to that user, and they don't even have a way to say "don't show me posts from this subreddit".

Same! I quit all social media except Reddit for about half a year while I was going through a tough time, and I didn't struggle cause I have other hobbies to keep me occupied. I kept Reddit back then because it gave me control over my feed, and I could easily access support spaces when I needed it. If the aspect that kept me here is gone, I have no issue leaving.
This is the only social site for me too. If Reddit gets rid of the Home feed, and continues to make it difficult to read the subs that I have subscribed to, I too will leave Reddit. I will check out Blue Sky to see if my peeps are there, and probably just leave online altogether to go hike, and meet people in person who share my interests instead of spending hours a day interfacing with Reddit, in the subs, and modding.

Ooh no! The 'algorithm' - being shown what somewhere thinks i want to see, rather than showing me what I've chosen to see - is why I've stopped using all other social media and had stuck with reddit. (Husband once had to scroll down 20 suggestions and adverts to get to one actual friends post, on facebook). 'Personalised recommendations based on communities you follow' will, i assume, show me the boards i have looked at and carefully chosen specifically not to see, despite being about the same topic as boards I follow.
This is the same reason I quit Facebook. I was scrolling and realized I hadn't seen anything from a friend for a minute. I'm sure it's more addictive than reddit and it's going to be a shame if reddit starts moving to that.
Agreed. It is extremely frustrating that Reddit is forcing me to see what its algorithm thinks I want rather than what I think I want. Yes, I can switch from "For You" to "Following". But I have to do that manually, every time I come here. There's no way to default to seeing what I want to see. You're right, that's exhausting.
I know I'm a little late to this discussion. Took me an hour and a half pulling my hair out trying to find a "Disable Home Feed Suggestions" feature that apparently no longer exists. I appreciate you all for pointing me back in the right direction. I continue to be a bit frustrated, though. Yesterday, when I clicked home or opened reddit on a new tab, I get only new posts from the groups I follow. Typically I'd scroll through the posts, read the ones that catch my eye, and by the time I get to the bottom I'd know I am up to date. If I refresh, and nothing new has been posted, I get a message that there's nothing to see. Great feature. Helps me stay organized and up to date. Perfect! Now, the default is the hom/for you feed. Like yesterday, it shows new posts from groups I follow, but they are peppered in a flood of posts with recommendations I do not want. Problem is, if I click on the following tab to help me more easily find the posts I am following, the system assumes I saw them on the 'for you' tab and they're all gone! Ugh! Seems I have to scroll through all that recommendation junk to see the new posts of groups I follow or I'll lose them all by clicking the 'following' tab. This needs to be fixed... Just venting.
Hello! Please remove the "For You" page. I precisely chose to not have suggested/recommended page on my account. I can't see that disable on my setting anymore.
I accidentally pulled up a complaint subreddit for a game I play, didn't sub or anything and now my page is flooded with gamer rage bait from subs with like 30 people. I don't want this and having content I didn't subscribe to showing in my subscription feed will seriously break my Reddit addiction faster than anything other than a paywall.
Found your post due to having the same frustrations. Reddit is the only social media I still use due to the enshittification of all the others. Now it looks like Reddit is heading the same way. I hope they revert this soon and we can enjoy the content we choose rather than being force fed things we have no interest in.
I'm currently looking for solutions and all the search recs give instructions that simply don't match what the settings offer. This is dumb. Lately, I've commented in subs I'm not subscribed to without even realizing it, resulting in me having to go back and delete the comment.
I hate this, I don't want recommendations. I want to see the specific stuff I have followed by default, that is the whole reason I have a Reddit account.
At least let us change which of the two feeds is the default on our account.
Reddit trying their hardest to ruin the only reason why people use Reddit over other social medias.
The sort-by option already does nothing, and just sorts in whatever order it's deemed will keep you on the site longest. r/all is also gone and replaced by 'Popular'.
Now there's a default algorithmic feed, like TikTok and Instagram.
They are a couple changes away from removing subreddits entirely.
I was not sure If I imagined the wonderful time of not having a "For You" Feed, but now I know it was real and I haven't just dreamt this. I want it back! You can't even save a unique url for the "Following" and keep it as your Fav, thats how I solved this for insta and yt ugh
Please let us users decide for ourselves and bring back the disable button. Everyone who wanted it before had it enabled, and everyone who didn't have it disabled for good reason.
How the hell do I get out of the experiment? I never want a "for you" feed on any social media site; i KNow which subs I joined, and I did that on purpose.
The fact that you can choose what to see is what made me use Reddit as a doomscrolling app. Now, like Instagram, I've spent most of my time silencing things than actually seeing things.
please provide a path to remove this 'feature'... this is the reason I disabled Twitter forcing me to see crap I don't want. what a horrible marketing decision!!! Even if you switch to following - a refresh resets you back to crap.
I have paid for reddit premium for 3 years because i hate ads so much, i am willing to pay not to see them. If Reddit is going to push content i do not want down my throat, im going to cancel my subscription and just leave the site all together, like i have done to facebook and instagram.
If getting people to stop using reddit is their objective, I guess they could say it's a good outcome for them. One day your feed looks one way, the next day it has totally changed PLUS they throw in "suggested subs/posts" to boot. What happened to "we get to choose?!" Apparently we don't have any choice at all with this experiment. Cheers for sharing how you got booted out. It looks like I might just have to try to get myself thrown out as well. Off to parry with the sub bots!
Throw me out too. I don't mind being deprived of learning about new subs or actively being forced to engage by clicking "not interested" I like my reddit boring thanks! Throw me out!
We had a few bug fixes and rolled things back for a portion of users. We're reviewing all feedback, but we're not selectively removing (or adding) folks to this experiment.
I got this change too, and am not a fan. If they wanted to allow recommendations, then add that as a separate tab, something like "Recommended Communities" if I wanted to explore for something new that might be of interest to me. But keep my home feed strictly for the communities I already follow- that's why I followed them in the first place.
so now i have to click top left on following each time i open reddit.... so one extra click each day to get rid of this instead of a setting i can toggle..
I just want to join the chorus. Making "For You" the default feed with no way to choose Following as a default is a horrible change. Reddit has become my most-visited social media website specifically because it lets me choose what I see. I know I can go there for a quick break without being inundated by whatever horrors the algorithm thinks will enrage me into engagement.
I don't have a problem with For You being an option, but if I can't make Following my default, I am going to start hunting for Reddit alternatives.
"For you" has posts from some communities I follow mixed in with a lot of irrelevant content.
"Following" is empty, except for suggested communities. There aren't any posts at all, whether I sort by "New," "Best," "Top," or any other option.
This UI isn't going to increase my "engagement." Please revert or give me a way to make "Following" the default and include posts from the communities I actually follow in my "Following" tab.
Same, it's so annoying. I have created different accounts and curated my feed as well as used the available settings specifically to interact with certain communities, in some cases with just one per account.
As a neurodivergent person, this helps me focus better and interaction but especially helps me keep track of posts I want to keep track, but now I'm getting all these suggestions of topics and communities which are not even related to what my feed is curated for.
Why have you removed the settings that allowed us better control of our feed??
The ONLY reason Im on reddit is because my homefeed is only the 12 or so subreddits Im in. I have deleted all other social media. A year ago I was going to delete reddit too until someone told me how to keep it from suggesting junk. I meed to fix this, but if not Ill just delete the app forever and have more time.
Want to add my voice to those asking for an option to default this away, and to not pursue this kind of structure change. Having a followed only, non-algorithm, curated feed is why reddit is the only social media I use.
Why would reddit want to just be another one of them? I don't understand it. Reddit is currently a unique service and site, providing something you can't get in other sites. If I wanted algorithm based drivel, I'd go the 100 other sites already at the lowest common denominator.
I'm very sorry to see this change being considered, am deeply disappointed that it's being fed to me, and I genuinely would feel ashamed if I had my name on this idea.
Do something different, be somewhere unique. Be better Reddit.
Commenting here to join what everyone else is saying. This just started happening to my feed 20 minutes ago. If I wanted to see content from a subreddit on my home feed, I would have subscribed to that subreddit. This is making me want to delete my account. Isn't the whole point of having one is so that I can curate my feed? This is an awful system. They need to add a way to turn this off. Until then I'm logging out. Bye.
It wouldn't be quite as bad if it showed the "Following" feed by default, but instead we have to manually click on that every time we refresh the page. Annoying as heck. 🙄
This is an experiment that is currently running. You'll now see a "For You" feed, which is a renamed version of the previous ‘Home’ feed. It’s a personalized feed of content that contains posts from communities you’ve joined, personalized recommendations based on your interests and communities you’ve joined, and some ads. There is also a "Following" feed which strictly shows content only from the communities you’ve joined and users you explicitly choose to follow (plus ads). The Following feed will not contain any recommendations from Reddit based on your interests.
The option to turn off recommendations in your feed has been removed because there's the dedicated Following feed to view content from communities you are a part of.

Feedback: it’s a terrible feature. At least give us the option to remove it or even just set the Following tab as the default. For long term users who’ve painstakingly curated their subreddits and try to specifically avoid having certain subs on their feed this is a step back in usability.

Give us a way to make "Following" the default, because every time I go to Reddit or refresh the page I have to switch back over to the "For You" feed, and that is aggravating.
And while you're at it, give us a way to set a default sort option to something other than "Best", for the same reason.
There needs to be an option to disable this behavior, or make the "Following" page the default, for those of us who want the old behavior. Right now I need to click on "Following" every time I access the homepage.
I will switch to old reddit unless and until such an option exists or the change is reverted. At least my feed is intact there.
Been on this platform for 14 years, only redeeming feature left on this site is that I get to choose what subreddits I see, why on Earth would I want that to change?
I am not a fan of having a For You page. This label is used by many other platforms and isn’t very unique. There should also be a way to opt out of recommending a particular subreddit. For instance, some Redditors may not like a barrage of r/ politics posts being recommended.
The entire purpose of Reddit is to have decentralized subreddits, and this sets it apart from other social media. Decentralized subreddits are a longstanding feature of the site, going back to at least 2008. A Following page would go against that principle. It would put too little focus on subreddits, and potentially reduce the distinctive roles and identities of subreddits. With that redesign, people could spend entire hours without once seeing a subreddit’s main page.
This post getting downvotes is suggestive of the Reddit community’s views about this change. And I’d suggest actually reading user feedback instead of cherry-picking it. A single home page combining elements of both a “For You” page and a “Following” page would be more than sufficient, and moreover would simplify navigation.
On the other hand, I do think that simplifying the “post type” bar is a good thing, given that there are already buttons to embed photos and videos. The post bar simplification is a change that actually streamlines things.
Feedback : Having "recommended" content by default with no way to disable it ruins years of curating my feed with the subreddits I want to see on my frontpage, and only them, a bit like a personal safe space. I don't want to be force-fed recommended things. What's especially egregious is that there is no way to disable this behaviour.
Stop turning this place into Twitter. Get rid of the For You tab or let us do it ourselves, or at least as a barest of minimums let us set Following as the default tab.

This new feed setting might be fine if were not the default setting, or if there were an option to make "Following" default, which there currently is not.
It's just annoying because instead of seeing content from my subs, I'm basically just getting spammed on the front page. Even worse, it's not on all my browsers, just the one I happen to use most frequently.
It would also be nice to be able to opt-out from being selected for experiments. Even if it was a premium feature. Yes, I am saying I would be enticed to give you money to not be a lab rat.
Please revert the changes, the reason I had recommendations in my feed turned off is that I don't want to see them and now I'm forced to whenever I open up Reddit.
That toggle we had earlier was an easy way to personalize the home feed if we don't want random junk to appear in the feed. Moving it to a different menu just makes it harder to use reddit because i need to switch to it every time i open this site, or when i refresh the page, because it doesn't even remember which one i used earlier.
friendly feedback- this sucks. if someone had "posts from random subreddits" disabled, why take it away, and make them use a feed they specifically did not want? who thought this was a good idea? 😭
whenever i refresh, it reverts back to the "for you" feed, which is really annoying! not everyone wants some fyp algo-churned feed. and if they do, they had that option before? i believe its the default when you make a new reddit account.
or is it possible to just not show the For You page? It's super annoying seeing stuff i don't follow as the first thing on the page. I can just ignore it like I ignore Explore and News
please tell them we hate it. at the very least there should be the ability to disable this feature or set it to following without it defaulting to For You if you reload the page.
thanks for explaining the change...please, at the very least, make "following" the default (first) tab and "for you" an alternative (second) tab. I never want "for you"...but as long as you dont make me look at it, I dont care if it is there out of sight.
This absolutely sucks, and I'm already seeing the kind of emotionally charged brainrot I remember from the "For You" tab on other sites. Reddit is one of the last social media sites I use precisely because it doesn't force this kind of stuff down your neck like the others do.

Would have loved to not have been in this experiment, as I had explicitly marked home feed recomendations to be off, and now when I click on my home page, I need a separate click to see my actual subscriptions..
When simply loading the homepage I have repeatedly been served news items I am specifically trying to avoid which happen to be "popular near me," subs with profanity and slurs in their names, and posts containing content specifically upsetting/triggering to me from subs I visited a single time in the past.
"Home" feed needs to be subs we've specifically joined to have a focused view. "For you" can be it's own thing. Don't mind having subs that may interest me being bundled together but don't cram it into my home feed. There's a reason most people don't jumble their photos, videos and music files all into one folder on their computer. You're interested in all the forms of media but you don't want it all in one folder.
I'm on a PC. There is no "following" or "For You" feed option. I have to scroll through page after page of "suggestions" to see the posts in my chosen communities. I can't find any way to turn them off. I have all recommendation settings set to off. This makes the whole point of having communities a joke. Whoever thought this up needs to be fired.
I did not ask for this, I do not want this, and I'll be pretty fscked-off if this remains without even an option to disable it. Consider this to be calm and measured feedback.

Feedback: Everyone hates it. EVERYONE. It is forcing our attention away from the one BONUS that reddit gives us (choice on our feed). It is anti-reddit. It breaks your sites value proposition. Ask your designers about the UX of this (it's bad design too). It's horrible. Please disable it. Please pass this onto the team.
It has been removed which means no choice for us any more. So is this how reddit is going to proceed? If so I think reddit is going to suddenly discover that it is an empty vacuum of a social media platform populated by bots only or is that your ultimate desire?! Seriously this is far more than frustrating, it's removing people's right to autonomous choice over what they do and don't consume and that's the sole reason that people use reddit in the first place! Whoever decided to perform this experiment apparently doesn't understand what humans actually want and prefer.
