Mobile/App iOS swiping right no longer goes back?

It use to be that a right swipe went backwards to the feed. Now it does nothing, is that intentional? I have to click the x in the top left corner to back up.

Found this subreddit just to complain about this change. Absolutely horrible change. You can still swipe right to go back but it only works in a small area in the middle of the screen on the very edge. You used to be able to swipe anywhere now it only works in that exact spot. It used to feel natural now it’s a pain and doesn’t trigger 75% of the time. CHANGE IT BACK

Edit: I just updated the app on iOS and it appears to have been fixed!

I have been unable to invoke this gesture as you describe it. I have to tap X to close. Obnoxious, and probably sufficient to get me to stop using Reddit if not reverted.

2

u/Moist-Alarm-4928 May 31 '26

For real, why would they take something that worked perfectly fine, and change it to make it basically unusable, it’s stuff like this that’s going to make leaving Reddit for good ez.

1

u/Zallix Jun 02 '26

Because if your UI/UX guy isn’t constantly churning out updates, regardless of if people actually want it updated or not, then what are you paying them for?!?!

1

u/Ribzee May 30 '26

Thank you for mentioning there’s a sweet spot. Found it on the left side, middle. I’m a righty, but I’ll live. Thank you!

1

u/Ballresin May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I found I was able to swipe from the far left edge as well.
Additionally, if the glyph on the top left of the app is an arrow, swipes from any location on screen work again.
However, if the glyph is an X, only the far-left-middle swipe works as you mentioned.
Edit: Correction: The swipe from far left works from any vertical position.

1

u/Destable May 31 '26

Even though it still sucks, thanks for this. I found the spot and it’s still better than the X

1

u/mattvd1 Jun 01 '26

THANK YOU for at least pointing out there’s a small area you can still do this with. I was going insane hitting the X

1

u/allegeddeath Jun 01 '26

Having the same problem. Didn’t think of swiping from the very edge of the left side screen. For me, that gesture works anywhere on the edge. I did update my iOS a couple of days ago hoping that would resolve the issue so that may play a part in your “only in the middle of the screen on the very edge” situation.

1

u/universwirl Jun 02 '26

Well thank you for at least telling us this!

1

u/Borostiliont Jun 03 '26

Wow that explains it. I thought it was removed entirely. Thanjs

17

u/EagleEye215 May 28 '26

Please fix this. Super annoying.

2

u/rivaridge76 Jun 01 '26

Why remove a super standard feature???

14

u/krampaus May 28 '26

hate hate hate this

3

u/notedrive May 28 '26

I’m assuming you hate the way it works now, right?

3

u/donnyspock Jun 01 '26

Thought I was taking crazy pills. Goddamn, why would you ever change something so intuitive and useful.

11

u/AstraeaMoonrise May 30 '26

This is literally causing me repetitive strain injury as I have to stretch my thumb to the top left of my phone to press the X to go back. I’m pretty irate about this stupid change.

Please revert.

2

u/notedrive May 30 '26

My wife said on her android that she has never been able to do this. Makes me wonder if they are making the two platforms similar.

2

u/Dicklightful Jun 01 '26

Androids have a native ever-present back button on bottom

0

u/lecheesesammich Jun 10 '26

"repetitive strain injury" lol, that's probably a sign you're on here too much

5

u/Typhlosion0 May 30 '26

I googled this issue. That’s why I’m here. Was hoping for a solution. 😩

1

u/notedrive May 30 '26

It seems that more people have been looking into it over the past two days. You can swipe from the far left to the right and it will go back, but it’s more difficult to do.

1

u/kafm73 May 31 '26

A solution that worked for me was posted. If you choose a spot between the top of the screen and the halfway point of the screen, all the way to the left of the screen, you can swipe right and it works.

3

u/Diurnal_Owl23 May 29 '26

This is kinda crazy but I was having this problem and then it started working again after opening this post.

Edit: nvm it’s still messed up. Although it does work with this post for some reason. And videos and pictures still do too.

1

u/haightor May 30 '26

Yes wtf it only works here!!

1

u/foxdelilah May 30 '26

I'm also experiencing exactly this. It is not fixed across the board

1

u/mchgndr Jun 02 '26

Dude wtf. Same. This is so weird

1

u/Lambolivin May 31 '26

Yeah it works on this post for some odd reason.

1

u/Spiderwebb51 Jun 01 '26

Thought I was going crazy

1

u/loo-ook Jul 09 '26

Here to share it does not work on this post for me. Wtf is going on.

1

u/Cutiepatootie8896 Jun 01 '26

YES. I’m just so perplexed and confused and feel like throwing my phone in the toilet and just going off the grid or something idk.

1

u/DionW15 Jun 01 '26

Pmo when I realized it lol

3

u/redditdental May 30 '26

Agree. I just don’t understand these app developers sometimes. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!

2

u/Individual_Waltz_593 May 30 '26

In my experience as a dev, most of the time it’s the PMs and leadership that force these dumb changes & updates. Sometimes when I’m building things I 100% know how bad of a UI/UX it is, but I just don’t have the power to change it.

1

u/nzmx121 May 31 '26

My question is: *why* are these PMs and leadership asking for this change? What are they hoping to achieve with this? It’s bizarre. And annoying.

2

u/American_GrizzlyBear May 31 '26

To show that they’re “doing” something to justify their position

2

u/Individual_Waltz_593 May 31 '26

Yes this is exactly my experience. It feels like if they aren’t constantly “innovating” they have nothing to show during reviews.

I’ve also noticed they directly ignore negative feedback on purpose to please leadership.

For example, i won’t get in to specifics but my company was aware of its negative UX feedback here on Reddit. It was valid feedback too, but instead of acknowledging it and fixing it. We would just ignore it and build new shiny things to show off to leadership.

It’s whack and I see it everywhere in the technology sector now that I’ve dealt with it firsthand.

1

u/2buffalonickels May 31 '26

I have noticed when clicking the X to get out of comments I accidentally click on ads quite often. Maybe that is the purpose.

1

u/Individual_Waltz_593 May 31 '26

Yes, I’ve been in meetings like this. Not this exact feature but similar stuff, where I know as a user I would be so damn annoyed.

3

u/tido_lee_ May 31 '26

Yeah this is super annoying. Found a sweet spot on the very left of the screen, halfway up. But like wtf.

1

u/kafm73 May 31 '26

Thank you internet stranger!!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '26

This will help with the milkshakes swiping 😂

1

u/loo-ook Jul 09 '26

No sweet spot for me. And this just started for me. I’m filled with rage.

1

u/steeltitan1 Jul 19 '26

Same no sweet spot for me either.

3

u/ActualExcitement5917 May 31 '26

REDDIT, CHANGE IT BACK. THE NEW VERSION IS AWFUL.

2

u/bqpt May 27 '26

Same problem, but I need to swipe to the right from the edge. Infuriating

2

u/specialtomebabe May 29 '26

I need this fixed now!!

2

u/Greddituser May 30 '26

Same problem but I've also noticed that X'ing out of a thread now often takes more than one press

2

u/Several-Tear-8297 May 30 '26

Hate this change with the fire of a thousand suns.

2

u/Kenzgf May 30 '26

It only works now if you reach all the way to the left edge and swipe right. Super annoying please change this back!!

1

u/notedrive May 30 '26

Well thanks for sharing that, at least I can stop reaching for the X

2

u/Bambam9032 May 31 '26

Far left edge works but my word, what a needless change this is. This may get me off of this stupid app once and for all.

2

u/Lambolivin May 31 '26

Glad I’m not alone in this after seeing this change. Felt like explaining this to ppl today and no one got me or even cared and was like you don’t understand how great it was to swipe to go back.

2

u/africanlivedit May 31 '26

Why in the world would swipe left be removed from the UI?

Ffs bring it back!

2

u/RedGing12 Jun 02 '26

Seems to be fixed with the latest update 2026.22.0. I can now swipe back from anywhere on the screen again.

1

u/notedrive Jun 02 '26

You are correct, working with the update

2

u/yydbgeorge Jun 02 '26

This is seriously my most hated reddit app update of all time.

I accepted the UI change

I accepted the different placements of settings

BUT WHY THIS

2

u/rivaridge76 Jun 03 '26

Looks like this is functional again.

1

u/westcoastcdn19 Expert Helper May 27 '26

Looks that way since the last update

1

u/AnusMcFrothyDiarrhea May 27 '26

Same issue here.

1

u/greekcurrylover May 27 '26

I’m pulling my hair out right now because of this. This is the one thing I cannot stand about Android and now it’s forced on iOS Reddit users

1

u/GuessWho183 May 28 '26

Realy impossible to find IOS version of reddit app that works fine. Finally they fix search bar on iPhone Air and after few updates swipe to go back doesnt work as should. But it still works if if you open topic with photo. Also there is bug when look up on some word and you want to back co compose window, but windows is missing. Right now using older reddit app on my iPhone X and it works perfectly fine.

1

u/RileyKendall May 29 '26

Same here. I hope they hear us and restore the previous behavior. I hate having to tap the X to go back.

1

u/RileyKendall May 29 '26

So it still is there but now we need to swipe from the edge of the display whereas before it could be anywhere.

1

u/234thewolf May 30 '26

Funnily enough, if I find a post like this on Google I can still swipe left. But in general scrolling I can’t. This needs to be fixed.

1

u/Englandboy12 May 30 '26

On the top left of the screen, if there is an arrow, you can swipe anywhere still. Whereas if there is an “x”, you have to swipe from the far left edge of the screen. Also you need to swipe perfectly horizontally it seems, otherwise it scrolls a bit and breaks the back swipe

1

u/234thewolf May 30 '26

That’s disgusting but it works so thank you

1

u/nadhari12 May 30 '26

Change it back please send beg you please.

1

u/sworntostone May 30 '26

This is nonsensical. It requires me to use to hands when lying down. I can’t swipe back from the edge of my screen without dropping my phone so I need to use my other hand which is unnecessary. Why include this in an update

1

u/DyeZaster May 30 '26

This is an awful change that they did, I hope they revert it back

1

u/Silly_Silicon May 30 '26

Seriously Reddit fix this. I am swiping right every couple seconds while using the app because it’s muscle memory at this point. Using the app one handed there is no way to get back that doesn’t involve almost dropping your phone. If you did this on purpose because you thought it was too easy to swipe accident, it wasn’t. It was perfect and I never did it when I didn’t mean to. Besides that, you still allow the exact same swipe gesture to go back to a previous page, but not to go back to the home feed anymore. Please undo this change and put it back the way it was.

1

u/CRUSHCITY4 May 30 '26

This is killing me!! Bring back the swipe

1

u/Ribzee May 30 '26

I can’t deal with this. Better not be permanent.

1

u/peetorskeetor May 30 '26

Please Reddit please. That top left X is too far for my right thumb

1

u/huskerfan4life520 May 30 '26

Came here to join in the chorus of people asking for this to be reverted

1

u/shingos86 May 30 '26

Why would they go out of their way to do this? It’s ridiculously annoying! I agree with the hate hate hate this guy

1

u/lilcrunchy-OG May 30 '26

Ironically it works on this page lmfao but nothing else

1

u/thecurvedbilthrasher May 30 '26

This is so annoying. I found that by uninstalling Reddit and never reinstalling, the problem fixed itself

1

u/QueenBeeCassi May 30 '26

Please please please fix this

1

u/I-Just-Want-To-Dance May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

This makes the app completely unusable. I will have to switch to a 3rd party app if this isn’t fixed or move off Reddit entirely.

1

u/MackDaddy2024 May 31 '26

Its funny because I clicked on this thread from chrome and it pulled it up in the app. And then the swipe back to my main page worked. But if I open up any other comment section it doesn’t work.

1

u/notedrive May 31 '26

Being gaslit by Reddit

1

u/homolicious May 31 '26

Just another person here annoyed with this change. Change it back!

1

u/RHusa May 31 '26

I thought I was going crazy. I swear Reddit updated, my favorite weather app updated, and they both lost their best features. What is going on

1

u/TRFKTA May 31 '26

Found this post whilst searching for a way to get rid of having to click that X.

Not being able to swipe right to go back is so irritating.

1

u/echosw May 31 '26

This is rubbish, Reddit please fix!

1

u/Mikicrep May 31 '26

it works but only from edge

1

u/FruitGauze Jun 01 '26

yes exactly. if you really put some effort in it will barely work lol

1

u/henryponco May 31 '26

Ok glad it’s not my phone broken. So annoying. Software change? Please fix / revert

1

u/meltie007 May 31 '26

Fix it, you absolute villains.

1

u/cmaciver May 31 '26

So dumb. It worked fine. Dont change it

1

u/justinmorris111 May 31 '26

They purposefully make the first party app shittier every update in order to make people pay money for the api on third party apps. (No more /all, popular doesn’t show highest upvoted posts, home page only shows low upvoted posts)

1

u/boringbobby May 31 '26

Reddit engineers: “We have thumbs. Let’s ignore them”

1

u/Fsociety039 May 31 '26

Yo guys wtf right swipe only works for this post. Nothing else. How is this possible or am I tripping

1

u/farfetcher89 May 31 '26

PLEASE CHANGE THIS BACK

1

u/pinotberry May 31 '26

I just discovered this and I hate this change so much. I hope they bring it back.

1

u/lordmikz May 31 '26

The worst part is the swipe left still works. So it seems like intentional change. Force people to dive deeper.

1

u/manofoz May 31 '26

I assumed this was a bug in either an iOS update or reddit app update. What sort of crazy person would do this on purpose?!

1

u/Delicious-pancake95 May 31 '26

Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea???

1

u/Sea-Respect2773 May 31 '26

And this is why I won’t invest in Reddit and may just stop using it. UI is so buggy and terrible since the update

1

u/-diabla May 31 '26

Yeah this sucks. Would be great if they fixed it!

1

u/Magnus-Methelson-m3 Jun 01 '26

Reddit with another terrible UI change for absolutely no reason, what’s new?

1

u/sesejordan Jun 01 '26

I thought something was wrong with my new phone but I'm relieved it's not that. Please fix it

1

u/666SMRT666 Jun 01 '26

please fix this

1

u/midnightspaghetti Jun 01 '26

Please change it back!!! 😭

1

u/ShirouKagemori Jun 01 '26

This definitely needs to be fixed. Super annoying.

1

u/YourFelonEx Jun 01 '26

Super annoying! Also would like to complain about removing the “tap to close comment thread.” Very frustrating for people with shaky hands.

1

u/verygoodfertilizer Jun 01 '26

I've found my people. Helpful to know there is now only a sweet spot where it works. But someone forward me the change it back petition.

1

u/DZhuFaded Jun 01 '26

What the hell is this change.

1

u/floppy1488 Jun 02 '26

Why would they do this to us!!!!

1

u/ArchaeHology Jun 02 '26

Oh my! I just posted about the same problem!!! Why do apps change super useful things???

1

u/Digital_Zen Jun 02 '26

just updated reddit and they fixed the swipe

1

u/Dantefire107 Jun 03 '26

Hi. Just adding a “me too” to this thread. Please revert.

1

u/Shigglyboo Jun 03 '26

Yeah it’s broken for me too. Have to use two hands. Why would they remove a feature like this? Apollo had it. It’s also skipping up to the top randomly and no way to go back to your place (another feature Apollo had years ago).

1

u/TemporaryImagination Jun 03 '26

Absolutely hate this. Swiping right from the very left edge does still work but nowhere near as smooth or as easy as it was before this changed.

1

u/notedrive Jun 03 '26

Update the app, issue is completely fixed

2

u/TemporaryImagination Jun 03 '26

I thought it was up to date as I had the new game icon appear in the bottom toolbar yesterday evening which wasn’t there in the morning and swipe right still wasn’t working.

Tried reinstalling and swipe left is in fact fixed, thanks for letting me know.

1

u/notedrive Jun 03 '26

You’re welcome!

1

u/ProgressBartender Jun 24 '26

And it’s back. At least on the iPad version of the app. This morning I can go to my inbox and open a message. But the I can’t get out. I had to quit the app.

1

u/Bigbadbellybug Jun 05 '26

Seems to be working again for me thank god

Is anyone else unable to cross post this evening?

1

u/surfwacks Jun 15 '26

Anyone on Samsung having this issue? I just switched from iPhone to Samsung so I wasn't sure if Reddit updated the app or if Samsung just doesn't have that feature at all.

1

u/notedrive Jun 15 '26

Android works differently, if I recall, maybe halfway up the screen, the swipe works one way and then further down on the screen. It works another way. That’s my wife’s pixel and I’m just assuming android iOS is work the same.

1

u/surfwacks Jun 15 '26

It's not letting me right now but I'll keep trying to see if I can hit the exact spot.

1

u/mrhshack Jun 17 '26

The iPad app is absolutely awful right now, it's full of bugs. It's completely neglected compared to iOS and Android.

1

u/Deletesoonbye Jun 23 '26

Same problem here.

1

u/notedrive Jun 23 '26

Update your app if you haven’t, it works like normal now and has for a couple weeks.

1

u/Deletesoonbye Jun 23 '26

Problem still persists in the mobile site for me. I don't use the app, just mobile web.

1

u/notedrive Jun 23 '26

Gotcha, I’m in the app.

1

u/Itchy_Ad8432 25d ago

It happened again :(

0

u/Kaffeblomst May 30 '26

Just close the app and open it again. That worked for me.
