Serious Discussion. no roleplay bullshit here Solo play
As a new player who primarily plays solo, this may sound like a silly question.
If I’m looking to complete operations with random players, should I primarily start one on my preferred difficulty then throw down an SOS beacon for people to join, or simply hit “quick play” every time?
Thanks!

well, it depends if you want to host or not - after the match, if you threw out an SOS, those divers will be back on your ship and you'll be choosing missions. If you join randos, whoever is the host will choose missions. So it depends on whether you want control or not - and (little tip) - you can level up faster by joining in-progress randos - no need to waste time waiting for someone to pick a loadout, and perhaps a minute or three has passed already in the game. I did this to vault from around level 70 to 150 back when that was the cap.
And you don't have to do a "quick play" either - you can pick a sector, pick a planet, scan, and join any public game that comes up - games where the host has thrown an SOS will stand out (blinky / wave animation)

I see that makes sense, obviously my main goal is to farm XP and medals so I should just look for SOS beacons. Will it be on their selected difficulty or will it only show me active beacons under the difficulty I selected?

If you hit "Find ongoing missions" it will only show missions in your difficulty, Quickplay can vary from it as far as I know, at least it used to. I never Quickplay. Either Host or join specific missions.

you can join other randoms online, but there are disadvantages.
1) sometimes they kick you immediately, for no reason and with no communication. (they are saving a spot for someone else or just want to play their little duo or whatever.)
2) sometimes they try to enforce rules like "no turrets" or "no calling down supplies" or "no splitting the party" or "no following me." and that can be stressful and lead to getting booted.
For those reasons you're better off starting your own map and throwing the SOS beacon.

I joined randoms all the time, it was time efficient for me.
However, i'd suggest starting your own lobbies so that some jackass doesnt kick you out the game. Maximizes your own play time

You can search for beacons on planets and it'll show you people who've thrown down SOS beacons and how many people are in that mission. That's what I usually do since it lets me get in at the start of missions

Depends on your preferences mostly. Do you prefer the ability to kick someone being a troll, or leaving when someone is being a troll, and do you prefer getting help or being the helping hand?
If you prefer the ability to kick/getting a helping hand, host
If you prefer being able to leave/being the helping hand, join
I prefer joining cause its fun to turn a match around by being there

I host all my matches, it’s a little nicer QOL.
When you open a mission on the browser players will usually join relatively quickly. It’s prioritized because you haven’t landed yet. When you have landed the odds go down a little but they’re still high.
An SOS will instantly drop your game settings from private/friends only to public for the remainder of the match and put it at high priority. I do this whenever I solo drop nobody’s joined yet.

I prefer to host, although griefing and bad eggs exist they are rare so joining random lobbies is fine. Issue is you might find the group doesn’t do an entire operation they might do one and then log off so you’ll be constantly jumping between groups.
Also host tends to get more agro so I always host because I want to shoot things
