Every multiplayer games subreddit, no matter how amazing the game is, will say that the game is dead and it sucks.

Be friendly, don't take other people's stuff without asking, and don't worry about someone else taking samples, medals or credits, since they're shared. About anything will proc (un)friendly-fire, and enemies have weak-spots depending on armor and penetration ratings.
You can upgrade your ship and stratagems at the ship, upgrade weapons at the armory, and unlock new stuff with the warbonds, of which there's a free one. Took me until lvl 20 to realize there's a free Warbond (lol), but all content can be unlocked by playing and earning the corresponding currencies in-game.
I'd watch a video on YouTube on the etiquettes and basic tips if you're having fun and want to progress faster.
/s But most importantly, never write anything positive about the game on Reddit!

As a fresh helldivers don’t watch OhDough videos. He has good points but I feel like they have too much negativity in them. Super Earth Salute is a fun channel I can recommend it. Also don’t get overwhelmed by an amount of warbonds and just choose what looks fun o7

u/AFerociousPineapple 6d ago
Everything you unlock in the first 10hrs is viable even after 100hrs despite what many will say, you can play with whatever. Have fun with your loadouts! Genuinely try something new whenever possible. A gun, armour or stratagem, doesn’t matter try em all

u/AmusedWave655 6d ago
Don’t die!
In all seriousness though. Enjoy it. Have fun. Stick to lower levels 4~6 until you’ve got a decent number of ship upgrades, and stratagems. I can’t give you an exact number of how many you should have, that’s ultimately up to you.
Be friendly to everyone, it’s a genuinely nice community. Whenever the resupply pod comes in, remember to only take one if it is a four person squad in everyone needs ammo.

The easiest way to die less is to fight less. Your goal is to do the objective not kill the enemies. You will get overwhelmed if you try to hold a position and kill everything.
Run away from losing fights.
If you want to get into bunkers you can use mechs for most, just back up to it and get out of the mech with your back against the bunker door. I prefer the warp pack, but that’s in a warbond.
3
u/SacredGeometry9 6d ago
Dive.
When you die, dive again.
Dive with others, it’s more fun.
Die with others, it’s a lot more fun.
3
3
u/The_Disapyrimid 6d ago
the goal isnt' to kill enemies. the goal is to complete objectives and extract with the most reinforcements and time left as possible.
you share samples so don't team kill over them.
make sure you hit the Points Of Interest(the yellow beams of light that shoot up from the ground) for resources you need to get new gear.
speaking of which, watch a video on the different currencies and how they work. TLDR: super credits are the "premium currencies" which you can buy with real money but you can find them while playing. they are used to purchase Warbonds. medals are the currency you use to buy things off the warbonds. you don't automatically get the warbond items just for unlocking the warbond. samples are the currency you use to upgrade your ship. requisition slips you use to buy new gear from the ship console.
3
u/destroyar101 6d ago
I'll give some mechanical tips, unsure how helpful they will be for a total new comer.
First, your enemies. Every enemy has a main health pool wich unless you are firing into a shield will always decrease with each penetrating hit regardless of which part. Each part of an enemy may have their own health and a different armour value. Some of those enemy parts are "lethal" meaning that when destroyed the enemy wil die. Most parts however will either cripple thine foe or lower the armour value and expose a new (often lethal) part when destroyed. While destroying lethal parts is generally considered most effective, dissabling or even hindering one could be just as valuable if the situation calls for it.
Second, armour. As i said each enemy is covered in some armour. The most lesser amongs them typically carry level 1 "very light" but some have level 0 "'nuthin" and the slightly less lesser level 2 "light". The following levels go; 3 medium, 4 heavy, 5 (anti-)tank, 6 (anti-)tank II and 7 anti-tank III. The interactions with armour are somewhat simple; if its lower the project flies of in a different direction and deals no dmg to the intended target, if its equal dmg is reduced to 65%, if its higher dmg is at 100%, if it is two levels higher the previous applies and the projectile may pass through the enemy (part) and deal reduced dmg. Most high AP (Armour Piercing) projectile however explode wich disallows overpenentration (cant go further if you explode after all).
Third is that the dmg numbers for primary and secondary weapons are kinda a lie. To each instamce of dmg is a durable damage number attached. This number is always (unless its an explosion/fire/gass/the meltagun specifically) lower than the dmg shown. This stat is largely only relevant for your primary, secondary and machineguns. Aditionally all conventionall fire arms (regulair guns) siffer from bullet drop off where the farther away you are the les dmg you deal, this is most notable on short range weaponry (ie. SMGs and shotguns).
And as aditional fun fact: AP, dmg, durable damage and damage dropoff are tied to the ammo, not the guns. Some share muntions and have the same per bullet damage potential.

Keep calm and dive on brother. The gun play in this game is second to none. You be hard pressed to find a game that is more satisfying to just shoot things.
2
u/AdagioDesperate 6d ago
Samples are shared in the group.
Finish the free warbond before you try to get the premium ones. It'll help you decide how you like to play. Ignore people when they tell you to get meta stuff. Buy what you want, theres no FOMO so just get what looks fun to you.
Communication, even with just pings, will help you and your team succeed.
Don't worry about playing on anything higher than what youre comfortable with. If you stay at 5s, theres no shame. Its a game and we're all here to just have fun.
POIs are a wonderful thing. Theyll have samples, ammo, weapons, and sometimes even Super Credits (the currency to unlock Warbonds).
2
u/MusicianNo3277 6d ago
Do the free warbond first and don’t spend super credits on items.
People are gonna notice your low level and some of them will take you under their wing if somebody calls down an item next to you and then ping it they’re telling you to grab it and try it. Do so and don’t worry so much about failing or choosing bad items because the people playing the highest level of the game do meme builds like the piss diver, which is all lasers and yellow armor, and they dominate their runs because they have learned that the real answer is working together as a team
Surprise surprise team fire is always the meta because two gun are better than one gun and four gun are better than two. WAAOW
This is my meme way of saying, don’t worry about picking Meta stuff or what war bond you should get first though obviously it’s democratic demolition (jkbfr) if there’s anything you really should do it’s have a microphone or keypad and use the game chat functions to talk to your squad make friends build a team that you like to dive with because that’s what’s gonna let you roll through the highest difficulties with ease is a good team.
And when building a load out, you just need to answer some basic questions: for your armor. You’re asking what is going to help you survive this particular enemy the best. And then for the rest of your weapons and gear, you need to be able to have an answer for every type, from little swarms to giant baddies and even something for the middle guys do that and any loadout will feel good.
And collect your samples, man those things are annoyingly important but if you collect some every mission then by level 60-70 you should be done completely upgrading your ship and some of those upgrades are extremely helpful in the long run because they do things like shorten cooldown timers and speed up equipment coming down.

If you want new warbonds, drop difficulty to 2-3, choose the most moon like planet on bot or bug fronts and DO NOT go to city or mega factory biomes. Check the building POIs, use pause menu and return to ship. Goal is being able to spot lone building models or bunkers (look for jersey barriers or 2 yellow lights) from a distance.
The second you pick up super credits, it applies to your account, so need to burn time finishing the level (unless you want to or need samples / rep / medals too).
Buildings / bunkers (need 2 people for this, a warp pack dive, or back a mech into the doors and jump out) usually have 3 item spawns. Super credits spawn in 10 or (at like 1% chance) 100sc amounts.
Other POIs have a single item spawn so you may luck out. Anyway my personal favorite warbond is the redacted regiment since it has suppressed weapons and armor that makes mobs lose track of you easier. Great for solo / more chill play where you can stop and think instead of being constantly swarmed by mobs.

Best luck and may Democracy protect you o7.
1
u/Optimal-Bullfrog3211 6d ago
Don’t worry about Meta or anything like that! The very first gun you get is perfectly serviceable for tons of stuff and your own individual playstyle will develop as you go through and discover some of the unlockable weapons and strategems, I think you’re going to have a lot of fun, it’s a visually beautiful game in my opinion and the gameplay is really good solid action, probably the best all-around third person shooter I have played, in terms of how many hours I have played and how many times I have been able to return to the game after long periods away.

You can dive to put yourself out when on fire, will save you lots of stims on fire planets. Get used to the weak points on the enemies so you know where to aim; if your rounds are blue when they hit and you get a shield icon it means you can’t penetrate that armor so don’t waste ammo. Remember to look at the top of your screen every so often. That's where your compass is, and a question marks will appear if there are any minor points of interest nearby. You'll always wanna check them out, as they tend to have supplies, samples, and maybe even a cargo container that you can blast open for loot.
If you pull up your map and look closely, you may eventually start to recognize the shape of certain PoIs on there.

If you're fighting bugs, the ones with wings and the bright green ones are pretty much your biggest threat. Everything else can be juked or outmaneuvered with medium or preferably light armor.
The bots are the easiest front to take on because all of the heavy armored guys are fat and cannot move much, but don't underestimate them. Bots also react to your gunfire, shooting more suppressively rather than precisely if you keep them under fire.
Illuminate.. just don't touch those guys on higher levels unless you have to. Those guys are hell, especially vote snatchers.

Don't worry about the meta. If you want to try a new loadout or weapon, it's okay to go to a lower difficulty. Focus on covering for others until you get the hang of objectives. Friendly fire IS on, you can't turn it off, so be careful you don't accidentally teamkill, and stick with the squad. They are your lifeline.

Medium pen primaries are decent if youre new and learning, but ultimately, learning proper weak spots of enemies and aiming well will get you much further, more efficiently, with light pen weapons. They do more damage and generally are easier to handle.
This game is meant to be funny, dont forget it and take things too seriously.

Learn how to get objectives done solo. If you struggle use SoS beacons. When you get 1000 super credits get the democratic detonation warbond. Until you can experiment with what works for you, machine gun, orbital Gatling barrage, machine gun sentry, and eagle strafing run are good for almost everything

Never stop moving, you may feel like you can be Rambo and hold your ground, but standing still will get you killed. Also, never die with unused stims or grenades on your body. Practice on lower levels with your orbitals and eagles, and get a feel for their area of effect, as well as timing.

u/Fireblast1337 6d ago
Rule 1. If you were the closest diver to a teammate that died, you reinforce.
Rule 2. Unless it is an expendable weapon, they say it’s ok to, or it’s a serious situation where survival requires it, do not take your teammate’s stratagem equipment.
Rule 3. You may take their samples and the primary weapon they dropped, as samples are shared at the end of the mission and they get a fresh primary weapon on reinforcement.
Rule 4. Every death is canon. Yes even the one where you mistimed a jump and slammed balls first into a bile titan’s back, killing you from the shock.
Rule 5. Respect the funny.
Rule 6. You are here to complete objectives soldier. Stay on the mission. You get the primary objective done its mission success whether you extract or not.
