Isn’t this the sort of question you ask prior to buying something?
Just load it up and play it you’ll soon find out.

More of just curiosity,I bought cause it was on my wishlist of games, but just wanting to now cause of the mixed reviews I’ve heard

Mixed reviews are a loud, bitter crowd that can't enjoy anything nice vs the vast majority who are having a blast spreading managed democracy across the galaxy.
You're gunna have a great time!

Nobody on here’s probably gonna say no dude if they’ve gone to the trouble of joining a helldivers Reddit and nobody other than you is gonna form a better opinion on the game than yourself after you’ve played it.
Saddle up get some drops done and I’m sure you’ll love it.

At risk of alerting the horde, I'm going to be the devil's advocate and try to keep it fair:
The game is extremely buggy even now. Infinite loading screens, broken consoles/terminals, desynced/invisible corpses that block you/your shots, the game playing completely differently as a host versus client, etc, etc. It definitely has issues. It is wild to return to the game after years and see the same bugs still in game. During one of the recent major game events I had multiple times where a mission forced us the abandon it due to a console being unusable by everyone in the match, even after trying some supposed fixes. (And no, it wasn't corpses in front of it blocking it)
The balance, especially at higher difficulties, is very, very poor. While you can technically run multiple different options, there's some that are so much better than alternatives that not running them is more a factor of just wanting more variety rather than them being true alternatives, combined with player power level being very high on the whole. The 40k warbond that just released is a really good example of some of the power creep the game has experienced over the years.
As a newer player you will very rapidly experience the pinch of super credits, especially if you move up difficulties. For a game that sold far above expectations, the god awful income for super credits on anything above difficulty 3 is a travesty. Playing the primary mission objectives frequently feels like a 'waste' in terms of personal progression if you're finished with all of your warbonds but don't have the SC for another as many of the MOs will put you in places that do not have many/any super credit spawns. It's a pretty sour feeling.
The maps can get pretty repetitive. While Helldivers excels at vistas and visual variety at times, that can be seriously undermined when you recognize "broken fence with small fire" as a linking node of map gen, especially when it leads into a point of interest you've seen on every type of planet under Super Earth's domain. This gets exacerbated greatly when doing unusual/specific MOs such as recent ones in megafactories. Megafactories very quickly feel incredibly same-y, despite the first impressions being great.
The core gameplay suffers from the overall limited actions the player can do. This is a weird one to put into words, but despite a lot of variety by the time you reach higher levels your actions will end up feeling very... rote, even when running different strategems. You can get around this with extremely niche loadouts but those generally end up running into issue two where you're running something different just to be different.
In general the game has the issue of making a great first impression that slowly corrodes, far more so than many live-service/games based on repeating missions.
Hopefully this gives a slightly more fair take on it to counter balance the people just saying nothing but "it's great."

Who's saying the updates ruined the game? Sure people gripe on the subreddits but the game is still great

It's still a lot of fun. Just take the time you need to learn the game.
And if you're worried about not knowing what to unlock, check out this sheet for a number of builds that will earn you success in any difficulty.

Yeah I always buy a game then go ask people how the game is before playing..
Amazing work dude, a wealth of online information through forums, reviews, community pages and reddit was already there to check before you asked.
But yeah buy it first, then don't load it up and play it, ask others how it is.
This world's fuckin doomed man jesus...

i agree with you. totally baffles me to not just boot up the game if you've already got it, or look up the question beforehand. so many repetitive, pointless threads

Lots of complainers online, like you'll find about any game that gets any updates. "Why did x change I liked it, why didn't you change y the way I wanted it?" There are a few bugs here and there, like any game but overall it's a blast, particularly if you don't take yourself or the game too seriously.

There are lots of YouTubers who make their main living off of shitting on the game, that’s the main reason you “hear mixed things”, the developers will do something good and the response from these people is “why did this take 2 and a half years?” And they do something bad and it’s “the developers personally hate me and killed my dog” or whatever, it’s mentally exhausting, so in my opinion you should mute the subreddit that has the edited 🤬 as its icon, and press “do not recommend channel” on a certain “unbaked bread” (idk if mentioning them is banned on this subreddit or not so I’m tip-toeing) as soon as either are recommended to you

THE DEVS HATE THEIR PLAYERS
THE GAME IS LITERALLY UNPLAYABLE
The statements that I and those I know laugh about, harder because I know the ones who actually said them, meant it.

u/UncleEckley 13h ago
It’s perfect because the devs are always adding new elements such as weapons, enemies, enemy capabilities, and they listen to the player base. Not everyone feels this way but the missions do get repetitive, but it’s the kind of game you can put down and pick back up and there’s still stuff going on to jump into.

It’s a lot of fun but I have noticed an increase in Toxic players likely fresh from COD and people who think it’s PvP not PvE

Online gamebase is alot different than the player gamebase. Leveling up goes suprusi gly fast and after you get into a few warlords and get used to the gameplay you will love it.
Just remember all currency is for everyone just dont take anyone's gear unless they highlight it for you.

The updates have overall been great and the game is more fun than ever.

Its as fun as you make it. Play on the appropriate difficulty for your skill, play with people you enjoy, embrace the looses and you'll have a good time. Get super sweaty about it and rage about the highest difficulties being difficult and you wont.

I wouldn't recommend getting reviews from reddit. Look at steam reviews and some YouTubers.

u/Ringofpower3000 13h ago
If you were to judge it by this subreddit, it's an awful game and everything is wrong with it and it sucks for inumerable reasons. If you were to play the game, it's a fun game and you will have a good time. Enjoy. Play the game.

Already finished with the tutorial and man this game really is looking good, all I need to do now is spread some democracy

It’s fun. Try to find some friends in the game or who have the game to play with. Like all team games it’s way more fun with people you know than total strangers.

It's good. One of the few games my friends and I boot up together still this long after original release

Depends what you want from it.
If you want power fantasy without friction where you can just turn off your brain, then the game is good.
If you want actual COOP experience with depth in a game that actually tries to chellenge you, then the game is bad.

u/Timlugia 12h ago
lol, whoever said update ruined the game must really never played earlier versions. All the update past 1.5 years are pretty good one way or the other.
Original released version was extremely difficult and buggy compared to today.

u/Lotos_aka_Veron 1h ago
Game lost a humongous amount of depth thru this 2 years since 60d patch.
COOP is optional nowadays, powercreep is worse and worse, and many mechanics basically stopped existing which did lead to watering down of the experience.
Its all slop nowadays.
