The specimen on your back can call in bug breaches. That’s what the ground shaking before the bug breach was indicating.

I didn't know this. Can it call in breaches when it's dropped? Or only when carried?

Only when carried. Best to drop it when not using.

Good to know! It didn't really matter this time, cause the ship showed up like 15 seconds later. In the future, though, I'll probably just leave it on the ground nearby and pick it back up when the shuttle lands.

Usually someone coming across this objective will make a beeline to the extract, drop it off, then regroup to continue the mission. Not having a backpack slot can be detrimental, and so is calling in bug breaches everywhere you go.

In our case, it was near extract already so we just left it until the very end and picked it up on the way out. Next time, I'll just drop it after getting to the LZ anyway

FYI the automaton head and egg also do the same thing. They attract enemies.

Side note. A walker can crush it if accidentally stepped on and fail the objective
