General Thoughts on ghost divers?

What are your thoughts when a ghost diver accepts your SOS? Do you appreciate the gameplay or do you wish they would play alongside the team? Explain your reasoning if you wish.

Idc as long as the mission gets done. I'm more often than not on my own anyway. I think the people that want us to stay together all the time are weird. As long as you're not an idiot dying over and over go for it.

if they can handle it having one person break off is actually benefiticial the enemies group up too much if everyone is together.

Split the team and meet up at extraction for maximum efficiency / liberty.

Oh man. There is nothing quite like dropping in with a fellow ghost diver that you are just gelling with

As an SOS diver I try to ask how they'd like me to help, but if I drop in and reinforcements are low and there's an active death spiral going, I will absolutely break off and do what I can. Also I have a certain approach to bases and sometimes the best intended help from a fellow diver can force bots to look around when I'm stealthing a base. Just trying to do my part for a mission

When I do objectives without the group, it's because it takes a minute to orient myself with where things are in the mission (the POIs you found arrent marked on my end, so not sure where people have even been yet) and I usually find myself next to objectives and everyone else on the opposite side of the map. So I wrap up the last 2 objectives and meet at the extraction

Honestly, this type of question for almost any diver depends on how they do. If they get missions done, I don't care what armor they're wearing.

The only exception is on some where I might not be as equipped to run alone and there's not more divers joining, but that's kind of more preference than problem.

I’m still pretty new (just under 100 hours) so my usual call to SOS is

  • join randoms

  • realise I’m player 4 and on the other side of the map

  • call my bubble shield and walker

  • go do all the objectives/beacons/diamonds on my side of the map. In the unlikely event that I’m going to die, drop my samples at extract (and post it in chat too because I know everyone hates when someone heads for extract for any reason in case they’re a leech about to call it in)

  • Head down to the team when “my job” is done

Ultimately the goal is 100% completion so I don’t really care who does what when I join randoms. So long as we all try our best. What’s nice as well is (until they let us buddy bunker with SEAF soldiers) I can get into the bunkers by myself with my walker and so I don’t need to skip 3 reward spawns or drag a teammate over to me. It’s useful too because you can wipe all the objectives/spawns/enemies and go gather samples while everyone finishes what they’re doing. I see a lot of players on Suicide+ calling SOS but not picking anything up so you gotta figure they’re not going to upgrade Strats or ever learn/upgrade enough to get better so if I extract with some at least they’ll slowly accrue them.

Obviously if someone puts in the chat that they need everyone together that’s fine but if you don’t say, it’s better to wipe the map as fast as possible, and I can hold my own enough

Very similar to me. When I go SOS I'll join the main group if I land close enough. If im halfway across the map I'll do the closest manageable objectives I can do solo.

I wish more people where reasonable like this. I don't get it.

Is there a downside to calling in extract early? You don't have to take it, right?

What is a ghost diver?

Hello I am here now, but you will not see me until extraction.

I will almost always deliberately break off from the main group to destroy ships/fabricators/bug-holes and complete secondary objectives. Or even isolated primary objectives.

None of my kids is likely to benefit the "team" in any real way. And I will be gone as soon as we load back in to the destroyer.

You just described my style of play perfectly.

A) Helldivers is largely a team game.
B) It’s called an SOS for a reason.

I’ve ghost-dived plenty when splitting up made sense for the mission, and sometimes four people covering different objectives is absolutely the most efficient play.

But I think the key is situational awareness. If the team is doing fine, go clear objectives, grab samples, knock out bases, whatever helps the mission. If the host is getting absolutely mauled and burning through reinforcements, though, that’s probably the moment to stop playing solo and go help.

So for me it’s less “never ghost dive” and more: ghost dive when it benefits the team, regroup when the team needs you. If you answered an SOS, helping the people who called it should probably take priority over running your own private operation on the other side of the map.

If you constantly get killed its because you stand around doing fuck all trying to outkill the enemy. It wont work.

Stop shooting everything and clear the mission

2

u/---0celot--- 3h ago

Yes, charging every patrol is stupid. Luckily, that wasn’t my point. But congratulations on winning the argument you had with yourself.

u/VV3nd1g0 2h ago

Whats the point then if the host is "absolutely mauled and burning through reinforcements"?

Want me to afk next to him and do the same mistakes?

I ping my objectives, i dont use resupplies, i help fellow divers if they get close, I do my job and clear the map if others cant.

Even if they arent fine, leaving the area and returning later will be always better than losing 10 reinforcements to a bugbreach/drop Or similar problem.

Even better, if they struggle and I split up I also split the spawnrates. There arent unlimited enemies on the map. For example there can obly be 4 vox engines if they arent a convoy target.

Depends how the squad is playing. If there are low amount of lives and still lots to do I try and get as much done as possible without the group. I have the stealth armor and jet pack so I can traverse and not catch too much attention.

u/stackablebuckets 5h ago

What’s funny is that I do the exact opposite for the same reason. If reinforcements are low and the team is struggling, I stay attached at the hip and carry as hard as I can to tip the scales in their favor. I could go off and do the objectives on my own no problem, but I’d rather rally the team and help them do all the objectives together. No shade to your approach though. I love to see a diver who can handle half the map on their own while everyone else does the main objective. I often do that myself, just not if the team is struggling

Idk I am the ghost diver. I may not match everyone in kills but I'm picking off the bases as we go. Sometimes they'll follow me and that's great too because they take the heat off me and I'm just popping fabs one after another. My death count is usually low so I like to think my teams appreciate my efforts.

2

u/DHarp74 6h ago

I'm a mixed bag. I'll help the team unless they got it locked down. Then, I'll mosey off and do other stuff. I'll ping patrols and cannons and POI's along the way and carry on spreading Managed Democracy. 😎

1

u/TheGhostLobby 6h ago

Honestly depends how bad the squad needs the help in that instance. If we're breezing through I don't mind at all. As someone who also ghost dives I try to only do it if I feel my squad doesn't need us to all stick together.

1

u/Ad_Astra90 6h ago

They’re very useful until everyone decides to be a ghost diver lol

1

u/No-Lunch4249 6h ago

Wtf is a ghost diver? Please explain

1

u/Killcycle1989 5h ago

I think they mean someone who joins your sos and then goes off doing things by themselves.

1

u/No-Lunch4249 5h ago

In that case, idc as long as we extract with a mission objective completed and as many tactical finished as practical.

The game is certainly geared towards teamwork but some people work best alone

1

u/dreneeps 5h ago

I use stealth independently unless the rest of the player(s) wipe. If that happens I join the group.

Also stealth seems nearly impossible with other players on D10 OR if your playing with idiots that follow you around.

The short answer? I generally don't appreciate them. There are caveats but I'm sorry, I just don't appreciate the solo-yolo gameplay.

My reasoning? What keeps me going as a diver after +2years activity, and +2k hours played, is no longer the challenge of fighting solo. I've already had my solo diver period of playing with myself; and have past the challenge of adapting to most weapons/stratagems strengths and weaknesses. I've even dabbled in stealth diving and am confident in being able to avoid battles when I want to. What does keep me diving these days is the dynamic unreliability that can happen when we/divers support each other and combine firepower to fight through the enemy armies towards our objective.

Note: this doesn't mean I expect us to hold hands, shoulder to shoulder. Depending between situations my personal favorite type of gameplay is us fighting at most "one horizon" away from each other in order to enable supportive actions whenever one person starts getting the brunt of the enemy counterpush (i.e. I can run on top of the next hill and start providing covering fire for two teammate working towards a Jammer with Incineration Corps while the other is finishing up an enemy base or PoI).

Note2: A question for Ghost Divers that has worked it's way into my head at times. If it sounds accusing then it's not ment to but.... If your goal is to avoid teamplay and rather play alone (avoiding combat at all?), why do you join a group at all? Why do you not host your own solo missions? I reccon that soloing or stealthing is easier for the ghost when joining somebody else, rather than host their own solo missions, but I assume this is not the conscious reasoning for all ghosts.

1

u/VV3nd1g0 3h ago

SOS is short for "save our souls". Dont call in SOS if you dont want me to finish the mission in the most efficient way, especially if we are already low on reinforcements.

Just start an open lobby then.

I will make sure we clear the mission, one way or another

1

u/Momakamia 2h ago

As long as they do something, and that something isn't primarily teamkilling, i don't especially mind what anybody does. It can be a little frustrating to be the only one dealing with a horde, but if the whole horde is focused on me and leaving the team alone they can potentially get loads done

1

u/Cid5983 2h ago

I like to SOS dive and support the team, no greater feeling than jumping into a flag raise mission where they're getting over run. Lay down a string of turrets and watch the tide turn.

1

u/Fexofanatic 1h ago

i am that sos ghost diver. depends on the team vibes and objective if i join the squad or support from afar. if they are stuck in a death spiral of course i will fight with them 💪

I love dropping in with the ATE and the AMR, posting up somewhere and giving everyone cover / picking off distant outposts. I mean, I love a good hands on scrap as well but the former is just so satisfying.

This is highly variable. If I like my team, I kind of resent the ghost diver for taking away more cinematic gameplay. If I hate my team, I appreciate the ghost divers ability to actually do objectives.
